A preview of the match report - as the website is not always updated instantaneously! After, to put it mildly, a bad day at the office on Friday in Sheffield, Jets were in need of a much improved performance when they came back to the Northgate on Sunday evening. In the first quarter a strangely lethargic Cheshire performance suggested that they might struggle to achieve this improvement – but eventually - about half way through the second quarter they managed to shift up a gear or two and by the end of the game the margin of victory – 25 points – was by no means flattering. This third successive home victory moved the Jets into fourth place in the BBL Championship - now they need to do something to improve their performance on the road if they are to maintain this lofty position. As suggested above, the opening quarter was not much to write home about. Although Frank Phifer opened the scoring with what is becoming a familiar routine in the high post, Plymouth started the stronger with an 8-2 tear in the early exchanges and lead 8- 15 going into the last three minutes. They maintained their lead throughout the rest of period, and despite a 6-2 finish to the quarter from the Jets, the visitors lead 16-19 at the end of the opening stanza, with the impressive matt Hilleary leading all scorers with 8 personal – Myers, O’Reilly and Phifer each had 4 for the Jets In the second period the Raiders produced another strong start and bagged the opening six points of the quarter to take the score out to 16-25. at this stage, the cognoscenti on the bleachers were imagining the worst and foreseeing disaster: this seemed even more likely as the South-West coast outfit extended their lead to eleven points midway through the quarter to 25-36, but then suddenly and ironically immediately after a time-out called by Plymouths Gary Stronach, the Jets suddenly clicked into gear, ignited by a blistering thirteen points from Shawn Myers, including a three-pointer on the buzzer to finish the half , which helped the Jets into the lead at 42-39 off the back of a 17-5 tear to head into the locker rooms with the lead. The second half started in much the same vein as the first with both sides trading baskets in the early going, Jets managed to stay in the lead but no real advantage was established. With less than three minutes to go the score was 54 -49 to the Jets , but an 8-3 finish to the third period from the home side, led by some clinical finishing from Chez Marks who was finally beginning to replicate some of his form from his pre-arm fracture performances of last season saw the Jets take a slightly surprising ten-point advantage of 62-52 into the final stanza. In the final period, with the crowd rather pessimistically fearing repeats of the opening exchanges of the last two home games, the Jetsutterly cofounded the disbelievers and broke the game wide open right at the start of the period thanks in no small part to Chez Marks as he bagged eight points in a 10-0 start for the home side to take the score out to 72-52 and from then on in it became the Colin O’Reilly show ; unerring from distance and close in under the basket he claimed 14 points personal in the quarter to lead all scorers in the game with an impressive 31-point haul. At this stage, the short- handed Raiders had no response to the Jets' attacking play and the home side were able to hold on for the comfortable victory. Jets fans could sympathise with a valiant Raiders team who were forced to stick largely to a 6 man rotation and understandably grew weary as the match unfolded. For the Jets, Paul Smith was able to rotate 9 players – all of whom ended up on the score sheet, with the notable exception of Paul Peterson who instead provided ten assists while Gary Stronach, the Raiders’ coach had five players who had to play 30 minutes – two of whom played the full 40 and the stats reflected this ;Matthew Hilleary led the scoring for the Raiders with 25 points personal and an astounding 21 rebounds while Tino Valencia had 24 & 10. For the Jets Colin O’ Reilly led all scorers with 31 points [ and 10 rebounds], while Chez marks who seems to be regaining some of his explosive form of last season had 23. Shawn Myers had 17 points including a blistering 13 in a crucial second quarter, and James Hamilton managed 12 points including an unblemished 3/3 from the line. In the end, Plymouth did not provide the stern challenge of previous years, but the Jets managed to preserve their 100% home record and, to some extent at least, expunged the memory of Friday’s visit to Sheffield! |
