That makes appalling reading. I understand that Ryan and his mum probably thought they were doing the right thing and let`s face it, these people are in the business of persuasion. Should there not be independant advice available from EB/BPB for young players like Ryan? Afterall they are GB`s future stars and therefore we should try to guide them to achieve their potential. |
| A bit rusty and knackered but still impressive for her age! | |

who wrote the article for eurobasket? This seems to me as though it is almost unbelievable! Who are they refering to, didnt tim lewis take him to spain and didnt finch take him to mons? I think this is a very biased article, and although he undoubtedly encountered a tough time i think this is a little far fetched.... or am i naive? |

well the belgium reference is certainly a (potentially libellous) dig at finch. |

Exactly, i am sure that finch was just looking out fo the best interest for the kid. Given what finch has done for british basketball i think it is a ridiculous accusation, surely by the kid being under the guidance of the gb coach it can only further his development and help his chances with gb. I dont see what he would get out of it in the long run except having a great future gb player. Was it tim lewis that took him to spain? I am sure he was just looking out for ryans best interests too. These two coaches were surely looking out for ryans best interests, if it went a bit pear shaped you cant blame them. The person who wrote this for eurobasket chould [ut there name to it, to be honest i am a bit surprised they allowed it on there. Davef i am sure you have more knowledge on this than me, what do you think of the article, i havent met ryan but having followed both coaches over the years they both seem very genuine. Who else was involved in the kids recruiting to both places? |

Not sure what to make of this and it may have simply been an excuse by Ryan to quit Mons BPB can't be pleased if it was indeed a coach who "orchestrated" this action Hopefully Ryan will get over it and have a successful career whether at Gran Canaria or elsewhere Edited by GlennHardaker, Nov 13 2009, 10:00 AM.

All this makes interesting reading but is it all really true? When you leave any club to join another club a letter of clearance is required by the Federation holding a licence. Even if you leave one club in the UK for another, EB would clear you first. So for Ryan to have played a single game in Belgium he would have had to be cleared by the Belgium basketball Federation, who would have had some paperwork from the Spanish basketball Federation. All youth players that have played in FIBA competitions are tracked so I found it hard to believe that he was playing in Belgium illegally as the article states (FIBA have looked at the transfer of players under 18 - which would have been the case with Ryan as it appears he had a professional contract) Belgium is part of the European Community and Ryan is from a member state so he would have free movement etc in Belgium Ryan is a good player but he has suffered so many injuries in the last couple of years, nearly every time I want to see him play he is injured, he hurt himself last summer while playing for England U18 while warming up (maybe I have a bad luck influence). I believe this is more the reason he has not played that much and not issues with his clubs. I say this because when he plays he normally does well As for NCAA eligibility etc, Ryan was never interested in the university option, he has always said that he would enter the NBA draft as soon as he is allowed. So I am not sure what the point of that in the article If the aim of the author was to bring Ryan back in the news, then the article has done that. However the tone of the article is not nice and appears to have other agenda's. Let's see what happens next |
