ok, found it. doesn't really say much though - all about making approaches but no confirmation of success yet. David Stern was on tv this morning as well but didn't mention much apart from the NBA and the game tonight (available on red button).

Will not work with Football team's name, history tells us this. We need to adopt a european way of thinking, not a US way. Maybe I would then start to believe! The BBA might aswell throw the £15m into the Thames or better still give the money to someone who knows how run a League in this country. You are all doomed!!!!!!!!!! |

we all know the plan 5000 people paying £12 per head for 35 home games (although the article suggests only 21) which I suppose would mean 5000 people paying £20 per head for 21 home games To break even by the 3rd season after pouring in £30m worth of losses into non elite (ie non NBA, non ACB league) players pockets first. Others can judge the financial feasibility of that. and of course the £15m comes from the clubs (not the BBA) but each club is majority owned by the BBA. What businessman worth his salt would commit that level of investment in a new project without a controlling (or total) interest? ron suggests that its not reinventing the wheel. He is kind of right. Because the wheel worked. What he is reinventing has already failed (Portsmouth FC, Glasgow Rangers, Manchester Utd, Newcastle Sporting Club). Because there is simply nowhere enough income streams to avoid horrendous losses being incurred. and targetting Hicks and Gillette. Shrewd move. Because they are really popular at the moment arent they? Just what they need to show their commitment to Liverpool FC to thousands of doubting fans. Divert money into a basketball club. They would be strung up and then run out of town! Edited by dave f, Oct 6 2009, 06:25 PM.

at inaminutes signature - no that is bread and butter - these are the Frites - happy days in Warsaw!!Anyway back to the topic - Gillette and Hicks have just slashed Liverpools budget and failled to build a stadium and are looking for additional investment. The idea that they would magic up investment for a Basketball franchise would be a PR disaster - "we have put your new ground on hold, cut Rafa's budget - but we did get you a basketball team" Manchester United have the Teeshirt so I cannot see that idea being particularly fruitful. I really cannot see the Market that the BBA can! Most football owners are already losing money hand over fist in the countries premium sports Market. Cannot see them rushing into a Market that has seen the likes of other Football clubs and the Cooke group fail to make happen. BBL not available for comment is the only thing that troubled me in that piece. Nothing new here other than revealing the investor pursuit strategy - which I cannot see as being the right target audience with only the cautious Randy Lerner as the only name without a good reason to not get involved - aside from it being a bad investment idea. |

you must have posted the hicks/gillette thing at the same time as me. Great minds ....... Why would the BBL give credence to the whole thing by responding? Interested in November 2010. Obviously the aim is to pick up d league rejects as all the serious european guys will have signed by then. if of course they have thought that far ahead. What do you think? |

I guess the lack of response could be about credence. Or lazy journalism - letting the BBA semi-pro slur slip through unchecked is an example of that. I think the November start is as much about the NBA traditions and DLeague level players rather than fitting in with European traditions - without FIBA endorsement and eligibility to play in European competitions there is no need to be in synch with European calendars I also don't think they have paid attention to the player marketplace in Europe at all. There was no room left on the back of the fag packet. |

Just so glad I`ve not been asked to do the marketing. Lets start with:- Birmingham, 2 teams, were there is currently no top flight team but some interest from the city. Manchester, 2 teams, limited interest in Magic even though they always have a good and competitive team. Sheffield, 2 teams, reasonable Sharks support - 1000? Liverpool (not Everton?) only just becoming aware of the game London, 2 teams in a city were the Caps fans can be counted without taking off your socks. Glasgow and Newcastle - some interest, max 2000? Cardiff, Coventry and Notts???? Think they should concentrate on the football perhaps? Strange this, the list has certainly changed since last time as there were no Eastern side teams and now there is. Nothing on the south coast. No Plymouth or Worthing, no Guildford. No Wolves or Milton Keynes. So if EB allow it to happen it will stuff Essex Pirates and Tim Lewis` AASE apprenticeships and the growth of a predominantly British development team befroe he`s even managed to make a piece of eight! Plus many other fledgling courses and academies. Big ideas need bigger money and why would the football moguls bother for little or probably no return. Has anyone warned these football teams they are diversifying Edited by Angel of the North, Oct 7 2009, 09:10 PM.

ARGH! Clearly the error is the work of SATAN: ![]() Naturally, both Sheffield teams would* play at the same arena- the big one, because the BBS is big-time! *apologies to the pre-school kids for the use of the ever-so-tricky conditional tense |

And apparently so would both London teams - Arsenal and Chelsea: one based in the West, one based in the North, both playing in the East. Clearly geography and tribal sociology not high on the researchers' (I have to assume more than one of them) list of priorities then... What's Sarf London done to upset them? I'm not going to dismiss the theory out of hand, but at the moment I am still mighty sceptical about the plan. And if the above is an indication of the level of understanding of the UK, I'd give it two chances fat and slim. |

They are American, so stereotype suggests that geography is not a strong suit. Perhaps the league is looking to fill as many seats as possible, while carrying over the big rivalries from soccer (sorry, football)?Back in the real world, there is some speculation regarding a possible Manchester United basketball team. |

Déjà vu time, in the mid 80s Manchester United had the basketball franchise that later became the Giants. Many football clubs in the UK seem to have large debts, can anyone honestly see them wanting to invest in a risky venture like basketball? |

It's amazing that, given involving football clubs is such a great idea, it wasn't the BBA's initial plan - rather than their fifth or sixth shot in the dark in the desperate hope that it'll work. As for the BBL's "no comment" - why would they give any cridibility to the latest chapter in the fantasy by talking about it? BTW, you can add Colchester United to the list of FCs who've trie and given up on basketball. |

The FT article seems to suggest that they are seeking funding from the clubs - $3 million plus per club - absolutely no chance. The only way that Premier League teams would be interested in the BBA is if it was under the same terms as Superleague Formula (Motor Racing) - where the only investment from the football club is the licensing of their brand. Liverpool, Spurs and Rangers I believe are the British teams. If Superleague Formula ever manages to make a profit then that is shared with the football clubs - so its a no risk investment for the clubs. I suppose if the BBA could persuade 8 clubs to sign-up under those terms it would give them a chance of attracting the investment that has eluded them so far |

You are right no Southern teams. Like say Brighton. Why not throw Bournemouth never really had a team, but fairly wealthy area and what get Ryanair or Flybee to sponsor. I doubt Superleague would go for the league, but the BBA people have supposed NBA ties get them to sponsor it like that would happen as well. |
