Looks like Finchy has landed a role with Houston Rockets NBDL team, Rio Grande Vipers

I don't see why this would effect his GB commitments.

i didn't understand why either

the Vipers press release Link mentions that Finch is due to lead GB in the 2012 Olympics, so hopefully the original article has put an incorrect spin on the appointment

Daryl Morey is an incredibly intelligent guy and I would suspect he was instrumental in the hiring of Finch. The fact that Chris is being recognised by such luminaries is great news for GB (assuming he continues with us).

Is great news for Chris, he has shown the basketball world what a good coach he is by leading the GB team to its current position. If he does step down from GB it will be disappointing for sure however we will just have to thank him for all he has done and move on. I hope he does stay on till 2012 as he has been key to success on the court. Though Nick Nurse does coach in the D league so I don't see why Chris would quit GB as GB is a summer (mostly) job, it may effect his prep time for GB but can that not be handled by the assistants?

Press Release from British Basketball.

Quote:

The Standard Life GB men's head coach, Chris Finch, insists his new club role in the United States will only benefit Britain.

Finch is leaving his post at Dexia Mons-Hainaut in Belgium to take up the role of head coach of the Rio Grande Valley Vipers; the feeder team to the NBA's Houston Rockets.

Finch has combined club and international duty since 2006, in which time he has guided Great Britain to Division A and most recently their first European Championships, where they were seeded in a group which produced the winners, runners-up and fourth placed team.

He said: "They [Rockets] first reached out to me after the summer league and if I would be interested working within the organisation, especially coach of the D-League team which is a team they have just taken over the basketball operations of.

"In the D-League there are independent organisations and then those controlled by the NBA teams and that was an interesting quality the Vipers had.

"The role brings certain advantages to GB. It clears the way on either side of the GB schedule to properly prepare and digest what's gone on.

"It will also help me be able to establish relationships with the likes of Ben Gordon and improve those with Luol (Deng) and Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Pops in particular because he's within the same organisation as me.

"Then it also that gives me the time to get on a plane and come over in the spring and spend maybe two weeks seeing our guys play in Europe. I haven't been able to do that as much as I would have liked to as my schedule has previously been challenging.

"The Rockets are committed to me developing and that's important."

And Finch also impressed the importance of broadening his basketball portfolio, which has so far been dominated by European action.

"I have been in Europe for 16 years and will of course stay on top of the game, but moving to the States allows more access to field experts on that side of the Pond who I've not met or have been working with for a while.

"I have always said that GB's style of play is a hybrid of European and North American ball and ironically that's what the Rockets were looking for."

Finch will join his GB assistant coach, Nick Nurse, in the States as Nurse is the head coach of D-League side Iowa Energy. The pair are set to go head-to-head on January 9 when Nurse hosts Finch.

"I seem to be on the same path as Nick but several years behind him. Nick has been great throughout this whole process from both a GB and personal level. I asked a lot of questions about life in the D-League and he was very encouraging."

Performance Director of British Basketball, Chris Spice, said: "As far as we, British Basketball, are concerned it's business as usual with regards to Chris and his position as the head coach of Great Britain.

"We are working with him to see how his new job may alter the way we do things, but there is no doubt that it is possible for him to continue to be both a club and international coach, as he has done for the past three years.

"Chris has been a key part of the progress the GB men have made and we hope that this new chapter in his coaching career will in turn prove beneficial to British Basketball."

Great move for Finch and GB.

D-League is done and dusted by April so Finch will able to head back to Europe and check out the form of GB players himself in May/June, when previously he would have been tied up with club commitments with Mons

If any NBA organisation was appropriate for Finch to join, its the Rockets. Morey is one of the best GMs in the league, and last year post-Yao the Rockets played a version of Euroball anyway. Good news.

No doubt Finch will also get to see Pops at close quarters and assess how Deng is progressing after the injury

Its good to see another former BBL coach get to a very high level. I think there is a chance Chris or Nick Nurse could end up on an NBA bench yet, and of course Donewald has already been there (what is he doing now though?) It goes to show the BBL isn't that bad a league if it can springboard coaches to this kind of thing. Billy Mims has done pretty well for himself since the BBL too...

Mad Bob was in Ukraine last year. Not sure what he's doing this year. While I was one of the 7 people in British basketball he didn't fall out with, his emails are sporadic.

I'd be surprised (& disappointed) if Chris didn't end up on an NBA bench.

Great to see Finch doing a great job still and hopefully is getting closer to a head coach role in NBA, would be a great achievement if he could get that far, he did a terrific job for us and deserves all the praise he gets for what he has done for British Basketball.
