Renton hits 35 in Hoods defeat

Nottingham Hoods 76 - Derby Trailblazers 77

Basketball at its best, 12 lead changes, biggest lead of 7 points, scores tied 7 times, 153 points, game tied at 70-70 pushing the game into overtime and if the shot on the final buzzer had gone in instead of hitting the rim it would have been a perfect day for the Nottingham Hoods basketball team.
Playing Derby Trailblazers one league above them it was going to be hard but coach Lee English was confident that if the team played to their potential they would stand a great chance of winning.
The game started well with Hoods taking a 4-0 lead through Guy Renton and Kirk Davis, the points were exchanged and with the score at 14-14 with 3 minutes of the first quarter to go Hoods went on a 5 point run, trailblazers came back but a downtown three from Tobias Benjamin pushed out the lead and with Guy Renton in red hot form they closed the first with a 7 point lead at 26-19.
The second quarter went to Trailblazers with a last second 3 point shot from Jamie McGaffin bringing the gap to 3 points but still with Hoods leading at 40-37, climax for Hoods being a 3 pointer long range shot from James Gardiner and a 23 point haul for Guy Renton.
The third quarter saw Hoods punished by a barrage of successful 3 point shots from the blazers, and the lead transferred to the Derby outfit at 56-53 going into the fourth quarter.
Into the fourth quarter and James Sutton hit a two point lay up and free throw to quickly level the scores at 56-56, another 3 point shot from Derby, points from Kirk Davis and Antony Scott, Hoods in front. The game swung from one team to the other with and with just over a minute to go Guy renton put them in front at 70-68 before Derby levelled it at 70-70 in the last minute to push the game into overtime.
Overtime saw Lee English put Hoods ahead again, two free from Derby, 72-72. The impressive Tobias Benjamin put Hoods two up before anther 3 saw Derby one in front, Guy Renton answered with two, Hoods one up in the last minute, Potts then posted a two to give Derby a one point lead with one possession to go, Hoods made the most of it and got a shot off on the buzzer hit the rim and denied them victory.
Good displays from youngsters Kallum Dunn and Ben Flook supported by Bruce Lauder, Mike Griffith and Derome Miller but in the final analysis the game was lost at the 3 point arc with Derby dropping 8 from 18 and Hoods netting just 3 from 9.

Top Scorers
Hoods – Renton 35, Benjamin10, James Gardiner 9.
Derby – Potts 20, Liutkus 15, McGaffin 13.

Hoods tame the Lions :wink

Nottingham hoods travelled away to Milton Keynes looking to stop there two game losing streak to play against one of the early contenders for the league title.
With the absence of James gardener, Derome Miller & Tony Palmer the Hoods where looking to return to the midlands with the win that would help to maintain there position at the top end of the league table.
Coaches Lee English and Michael Griffith had to set out there game plans very early on to contain the MK Lions II outside shooters who had been causing problems to there opponents already this season and they managed to contain them enough for the Hoods to record the much needed win.
With Anthony Scott and Kallum Dunn looking after the ball on offence for the Hoods, they helped lead the Hoods to a lead of 14 – 17 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter Hoods led by Guy Renton at both ends of the court contained there opponents to only 5 points whilst scoring 14 themselves to go into the half time break up 19 – 31.
In the third quarter MK Lions came out with stronger resolve to outscore there visitors by 19 – 11 points to pour pressure on the Nottingham Hoods coaches, both teams fought hard into the final quarter and the lead changed several times, then with only one second on the normal game clock and the scores level and extra time about to be played, Tobias Benjamin had a shot at the basket to seal the win but missed his shot, however he was fouled by the defender and had the chance to redeem his miss on the free throw line.
With the home team followers making some noise Tobias stepped up to the line and missed his first attempt but remained cool to sink the second shot and give the Hoods the narrowest of wins 63 - 64

Top scorers for the Hoods:
Guy Renton with 25 points supported by Anthony Scott 8 points,
Tobias Benjamin, James Sutton and Kallum Dunn 7 points.

Nottingham Hoods are at home Saturday this Saturday evening 7.30pm tip at the Wildcats arena when the visitors are The college of West Anglia Fury who the Hoods have already beaten this season in one of the cup competitions.

Hoods calm the Fury

Nottingham Hoods 73
College of west Anglia 42

Hoods had already beaten the College of West Anglia Fury this season in the cup, and set about very early to maintain their place at the top end of the league table.
Having been out of basketball for the last two years James Sutton (12 points on the night) is returning to his best and is beginning to take some of the pressure off of captain Guy Renton with 12 points, the highlight of Jame`s game was an inbound pass from the improving Kallum Dunn which brought the 200+ strong crowd out of there seats as he double handedly slammed the ball straight through the ring.
Coaches Lee English and Michael Griffiths used good squad rotation again and finished the first period up 18–8 and with a rejuvenated Kirk Davis who led all Hoods scorers with 15 points they where always going to be too strong for the visitors and went into the half time break up 36-24.
In the third period Hoods contained the Fury to only 6 points whilst scoring 18 points themselves and there was no way the Fury where coming back from the large deficit that had been inflicted on them as the Hoods went on to win the game easily.
Coach Lee English said with the players skills that he has brought to the Hoods, we have to be more clinical with our finishing and not letting opponents off the hook.

Other Hoods scorers on the night, Guy Renton 12 points, Tobias Benjamin 9 points, Ben Flook 8 points, Anthony Scott & Lee English 6 points Kallum Dunn 3 points,
Michael Griffiths 2 points.
