I've looked on the FIBA website - to see if GB get any points for being at Eurobasket. I don't understand how the ranking system works. The site has an explanation - but i still don't get it. Can someone please explain it for a simpleton.

I think you have to wait a number of years for the points to kick in. They have a two Olympic games cycle (i think). This is why when the USA were finishing 3rd/4th for a few years they were still ranked no.1 and now they're back on top they're ranked no.2

Link:- How the rankings work

Places 13-16 get 6, 5, 4, 3 points respectively, So GB should have something at least..... Odd.

Whenever a new championship is played the oldest championship of that category drops out. The FIBA Ranking is then recalculated.

The rankings should updated soon with the results of Eurobasket. By saying "soon" I mean the time from now to World Championships :)

I don't know how to explain the way that rankings work in a simpler way than it is done on FIBA website. I believe that the way that te points are calculated is pretty simple ( http://www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/even/rank/p/openNodeIDs/998/selNodeID/998/howItWork.html ).

the number of competitions that are taken into account: 5 Eurobasket Championships

That makes Eurobasket 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. Eurobasket 2011 will replace points from Eurobasket 2001 so that only 5 Eurobasket's are calculated.

Since GB finished 13th in Eurobasket 2009 they will get 6 points because Eurobasket's weight is 1 and 13th place is given 6 ranking points. 1 x 6 = 6 That would be ~55th place in current rankings.

Olympic Games and World Championship weighs 5 so, say, 10th place in Olympic Games is worth 5 x 9 = 45 ranking points.

Just realized that it says "Ranking Men after EuroBasket (2009)" on FIBA website so I have no idea why GB is not there. I might try contacting FIBA and ask about that. The only explanation I could think of is that FIBA needs the team to play in more championships before adding a team to their ranking. But that doesn't seem to make sense as for example Portugal only played in Eurobasket 2007 and Eurobasket 1957 if I'm not mistaken and yet they are in the rankings.

But you can consider yourself sharing 55th place with Bulgaria, Poland and Czech Republic. As they also have 6 points.
