Everyone pleased with a good team performance. But these friendlies are just part of the pre-season training programme - many more tough hours on court with coach before the boys can consider themselves ready for the season...but you are absolutely correct...it was very promising.

Suprisingly great team basketball for a first competitive outing of a new team !
Shooting % high on 3pts and free throws, be interested to see the stats.

All of our boys looked confident, well drilled and totally up for it!

Coach has proved once again that he can spot top players at a 1000 paces!

Must admit though, team select didnt seam to be that hot so i recon wednesdays game will be an acid test and most certainly more of a taste of things to come for our mighty green machine!

Having said that, for king eric the unstopable to bag 31 points is more than i good sign of thing to come!

inho of course

I know it's early days but I was impressed with the new team. They looked well organised for a team that's only been together a couple of weeks.
It certainly looks like Gary's done it again with the recruiting

Just out of curiosity, is Eric's surname pronounced flat-owe or flay-toe?

Thanks for that. Don't suppose you know how to pronounce Hilleary? (I assume nobody has any problems with Czynienik)

Raiders 81 - 79 Worcester Wolves
Heard ref's were a bit one sided, but Wolves have some good 3 throwers.
Also heard Ant is still not quite fitting in yet to Wolves - but hope he does before season starts!

one sided refs is a strange take on the game, unless you mean their differences between the first and second halves!

Raiders 77 Reading 69 Not the most convincing victory but REading made a game of it in the final quarter after Raiders led all game. Flato top scored with 23, Horton and Valencia had 14 apiece and Hilleary netted 13. Horton and Valencia pulled down 13 boards each.

well i've watched all the pre season games and seriously believe Flato is exceptional...in fact way too good for us and i have a bet with someone he'll be snapped up before too long.

Tonights game...a couple of points...how many unforced errors and missed layups??
We were playing a seriously deplete Reading side who had 5 under 18's or just 18 year old players on their bench and all except one who was obviously injured played significant minutes...which leads me to my point.
WHEN is gary going to play our bench? I know james is injured and will make a big difference especially in defence but if your not going to play the new guys i.e Mark Gillbard and Sean Porter..in friendlies when the hell are we going to use them??!!
When one of the starters is fouled out in a big game?
And i think big mike may be a lovely guy but do you seriously think he's good enough for Raiders in the BBL?

Beyond me , i thought we were actually going this season to start using the talented local youngsters as Reading, Bristol and others do..

Going to be a very long season i think, but we'll be there every home game

Well that game raises some serious questions about our team this year and the club as a whole. Reading showed what INVESTMENT in development can do for you. In a short space of time they have propelled themselves into one of the top development sides in the country especially in the 16-18 category where the academy plays a huge role in this. Last night it was plain to see the return of that investment with an Under 18 England guard starting for them (Thoseby) and another making a significant contribution off the bench (Sayers) aswell as 15 (name escapes me) who came in and did a great job, knowing his role out on the court. The starting PG (Mckay) has come through the academy system aswell as number 8 off the bench (Kearney) who played an important part with his shooting touch and defended the post exceptionally well against a much taller opponent.

I don't know the exact numbers but its clear Reading have invested heavily and sensibly in this system and are clearly reaping the rewards. The team defence was exception and they all new exactly what to do when the defence broke down. Don't be under any illusion, Raiders didn't play bad, they just faced a good defence who made them work for everything they got. They ran simple offenive sets, and made the right decision on what pass or shot or dribble to make based on what the defence did, it didn't work every possession but it was better than the one-on-one garbage that Raiders sometimes drag themselves down to.

All the while the best we had to bring off the bench was Jamie and Jay, give me a break. Last night they struggled, big time, and they were guarding kids. They have looked at of place all pre-season. Both are solid EBL 2/1 players who are able to score at that level but don't bring anything else when the ball isn't in their hands, and that was at EBL 2, they can't score the ball at this level so I don't know what role they play? I don't know the salaries they get but I bet if we invested what they are getting paid into the development programme we would have a pretty darn good shot at developing kids as good, local kids, in abundance too. Those young players didn't look out of place at all.

Now I know that the Raiders and Cannons have now merged and there is a new development and hopefully we can start producing these types of players yada yada yada...but I'm talking about investment. I wonder how much money is being put into this new development? Are the costs involved coming down and the game being made accesible to everyone? Are Raiders investing in a performance culture that will bring top level juniors through? They are the ones who should be investing in this on an equal footing with Plymouth Marjon as they stand to benefit the most from it. Reading are by no means cash rich, but they have used the money they do have and invested wisely, in a sustainable model. The money Raiders have pays for average Americans year on year (I'll take Flato out of that statement as he is a top class player), money I'm sure only Reading can dream about. Just think what they could do with it.

I'm not trying to knock the work being done by volunteers in the development, I'm asking what resources are they being given to become a top development?

A very good point PL2, whilst Reading's juniors put on a gutsy performance our development players languished on the bench. Clearly Gary has consigned them to the bench for the season when he won't use them now, in pre-season. Has he even seem them play in a competitive game? Does he know what they are capable of in pressure situations? If they aren't good enough to play why have them train? Surely he needs his practices to be competitive to ready his team for a game. How is he developing these players? He said in the Herald the other day he is working to develop Michal. Is this the same development that Jeff Danchie received? I do hope not as it seems there is no hope!

Development isn't Gary responsiblility I hear you cry!! (An arguement frequently used over the years) Well actually it is, he needs to develop his players (American or otherwise) to get the best out of them. He needs to develop his core group of English players so he isn't starting from scratch year on year (ala Newcastle). There of plenty of BBL coaches around the league who take an active role in the development of their juniors and academies.

If in your opinion he still isn't responsible for developing players then he must be a man manager, a motivator, a tactician?? Well, for the last 15 mintues of the game last night, I saw him sat in his chair, not looking like he knew what to do....

Maybe I'm being to harsh, but last night showed to clubs, poles apart, because they share different ethos. I know its ok for people to have different values and opinions but what I'm saying is which one allows our kids to play grow and develop and become true role models? It also happens to be the cheaper option...

Vince, you ask many questions and seem not to have tried to find out what the answers are, preferring instead to use this messageboard as a way of criticising the Club. I invite you to telephone me and arrange to come to the office and see exactly what the Club does on a day to day basis in regard to investing in young people playing basketball. You will be amazed - and then if you like you can come back on this board and tell everyone.

well enlighten us Damon please? surely this is the place to do it or do you want dozens of us ringing your office?
I firmly believe locally we have players as good as Readings youth ...in fact Sean Porter came through the Reading ranks and was good enough to play for bristol div 1 outfit last year?
And not getting into slagging individuals but you seriously telling me Mark Gillbard is last in the pecking order behind some of our other players?

Some of youth players have been approached by the top flight acadmies so there must be a depth of talent there...should these boys stay locally to be bench warmers or move on where they'll get playing experience?

The training the local boys get is excellent , the coaches are first class... but whats the future for them, and raiders?
Come on damon be honest we were lucky to beat Readings youth team plus a point guard with BBL experience...thank god for Mister Flato ! i dont know if it was luck or great scouting technique that found him but we'd be well and truly ....insert your own adjective...without him.
One point i'd like to make ...if Flato cant get a start in america or europe , i reiterate he's levels above us what chance do any of the local up and coming players have of progressing?

at least this talk aout us being a european team has stopped.

so not having a dig Damon tell us whats happening development wise and with due respect are you even the person to ask?
I'll bet you 50 quid gary cant name 6 of the premier 18 players or div 4 come to that? and again not to be taken as a dig, but he wouldnt know one of the youngsters if he bumped into them in the street BUT funnily enough the Reading coach does and made a point of saying hello to them and last night and asking how their pre season is going and asking questions about their pre season games...

so Gary , damon and dave...how is their pre season going?
one of the reasons i respect the cannons coaches...sorry Plymouth coaches so much is that too a man they know every kid from 7 years old to the men, they know their strengths , weaknesses and mental attitude and go out of their way to work with them.
A friend of mine whose son was invited to Manchester United to train was shocked to find alex Feguson stood in the rain watching an under 14's game and saying hello and asking questions about individuals.
i reserve my judgement on the merger for now...at least the boys who used to wear green now know what training hard is ...again not a dig , i want nothing more than a succesfull team be it youth or Raiders.

Well I feel that the performances on the court has given plenty of answers Damon, about how the club views its development and use of young english players. Yes this is a messageboard where I can say entirely what I want (Within the T&C's) about the club. This happens in many sports, but surprisingly the clubs are above posting responses on the message board!!!

So I take it your definition of investment in young people playing basketball is the council funding for your coaches to deliver in schools? I think the Hoops 4 Health programme is an excellent programme btw, my only concern is that it has taken this long for feeder clubs to be set up. This is something that isn't exclusive to the programme

He was just as good a player in Div 2 last year as Jay and Jamie.
