In the Manchester Evening News today it states that Brandon Kimbrough will be returning for a second year to Magic so long as the work permit goes through, and that talks are on going to keep the core of the English players (mentions Stephan Gill and Steve Boonham), also that Magic are looking at other EBL division 1 players (am guessing it meant EBL and not BBL given it just had BL) and the possibility of a second American.

I'd like to see Jeff bring in a solid big man whether that be American or European (including English) to play along side Steve Boonman.

Who's signed for your team, who's moved on or speculations post them here

Well, same point still stands, they could give him the same deal. Pure speculation of course.

Watts Signs on for magic
Also keeping a close eye on what is happening at Everton, with 3 former players linked with the club (JJ Del and Andy Thomson).

Also looking at an Irish 6' 5" player and players who have played for Switzerland and Scotland.

Boonham is out for personal reasons, though may yet still come back.

Providing the rest of the roster is up to the usual standard, surely the addition of Watts makes Magic the pre-season favourites for the D1 title?

Magic will almost certainly be top-4; whether we're favourites depends on the full rosters. Anybody know about the strength of Reading, Leopards or Sheffield yet?

Manchester's guard unit of BK and Stefan Gill will be tough to match, but I worry about our front line. Yes, Watts is one of the league's best players and is a massive coup, but to me he's an oversized 3 who might be expected to play the 5 if Boonham is gonna be out. Hopefully it won't come to that and Jeff will bring in some reasonable bigs.

Given the trophy tips off on October 3rd, we should know more by the end of the week!

its hard to tell just now, but Sheffield had two of the best imports in the league last year but not much else to go with them, so unless their imports are astonishing, they probably won't have the English guys to go with it. Reading have lost Mumuni and Watts, plus Titmuss. If Magic signed just one of Andy T or Del, who could live with that?! I know, if this, if that, but.... that would be one hard team to beat. Who even has a quality big man in D1 anyway? You can win playing smallball and running, and thats what I'd expect us to do mostly.

Leopards could be interesting though.

James Jones and Andy Thomson have signed for Everton. They basically have most of what would be our side if we went BBL, perhaps.

Bristol Academy Flyers have filled up their Roster ahead of the season. Coach Kapoulas has had a busy summer!!!

They have 2 good Americans in Doug Mclaughlin-Williams (formerly of Sheffield) and new boy Davis Bowen (6"9 graduate of Appalachian State University).
Flyers also have a number of players from the demise of Cardiff, 6"9 Tony Berry, 6"6 Mike Gregory and 6"3 guard Asa Waite. Also joining flyers after a season out is 6"7 Polish guard Arek Makowski, Jack Stannard fromerly with TASIS as a junior and French Academy last year and 6"8 Enrique Garcia joining from the Luxembourg National team and the Racing club.
Returning for the Flyers are 6"5 guard Greg Streete, guards Tony Watson and Damon Dyer and 6"8 Centre Tom Hutchinson and also Academy Players Mike Farage, Iri Omoyemi and Rob Loftman.

Players who have left the club are: Tyrone Treasure (Panola College, Texas) Richard Loftman (Chadron State University, Nebraska) Gareth Till (Stepped down to help development and play for Flyers Div III team) Alex Krsteski and Mak Sule (22 Feet Academy, France).

Magic step up recruitment

Anthony Jepson

September 30, 2009

JEFF Jones’ Manchester Magic recruitment drive is building momentum.

But the veteran coach won’t have a full-strength roster before this weekend’s opening double-header against Leeds Carnegie and Tees Valley Mohawks.

Magic kick-off the new EBL season with National Trophy pool games against the newly-promoted Yorkshiremen at home on Saturday (7.30pm), followed by a trip to the North East on Sunday.

But, despite having pulled off a coup in signing former Reading Rockets ace David ‘Tintin’ Watts, Jones still has work to do to add more new faces.

Scottish international Tom Pearson, a 6ft 6ins 25-year-old, is set to join the club, but won’t be available immediately.

And with Jones resigned to being without key big man Steve Boonham for at least the early part of the season, he is assessing the merits of a number of forwards, of various nationalities.

“It is a bit like the United Nations at the moment,” he said. “We are looking at a couple of players. We got a 6ft 6ins kid from Luxembourg and another American coming in.

“In two weeks time we’ll be pretty good! Things have a way of just falling into place and if that happens the way it has done in previous years, we’ll be fine.

“Pearson will give us some inside presence, but he has good versatility and can give us something from the perimeter as well.”

Along side new boy Watts, Jones will call on returning backcourt trio Stefan Gill, Brandon Kimbrough and Ambokile Bell, as well as the experienced Adam Slater and Jon Linsley, and admits his core group will just have to get on with it until reinforcements arrive.

“The Trophy is our pre-season in a way. Don’t expect us to look the same when the league programme comes around in a few weeks. But we will be OK. We are just going to go and play this weekend.”

Magic are offering entry to the first game of the season, against Leeds at the Amaechi Centre (at Whalley Range High School), for just £1 for kids and adults alike.

Suppose Magic's meeting with promoted Leeds will be a guide to how the new boys will fare. Adrian Ferryn and Michael Medved look like good signings for Carnegie who opened up with an impressive 89-42 win over Tees Valley Mohawks (who are led by former Eagle Brian McCotter and the returning duo of Lee McLaughlin and Ike Attah)
Feel the (Huddersfield)Heat !

Terrell Smith has had his visa application rejected and Rockets have been told an appeal could take until April (!) to be heard according to EB site update today. Jon May is injured too- not looking great for the Rockets

This reminds me of the trouble Magic had I think 5 years ago with Andrew Lovedale having his visa rejected and missing the whole season before being allowed to return the following year. Magic went through the appeal process and the reason he was rejected in the first place was he over stayed his original visa (I think it was by a matter of days possibly weeks).

I was discussing the subject of returning players with Maggie on Saturday and we think Brandon is the first American (US national) to return for a second year.

From memory the only other returning players (non-British) we came up with were: Aaron Roberts (Australian), Andrew MacKay(Canadian), Lovedale and Steve Hastings (Australian 1 and half seasons before joining Sheffield)

European returning players Geri Major (Hungary) and Michalis Papadopoulos (Greece)

Did Jacob Molina play 2 seasons? (pre 2004)
