Was drafted in Thursday's NBA Draft by Portland Trailblazers.

Does anyone know how he qualifies as a Brit?? As he was Chris Finch's 23 man squad in April 08.

Also, is he not in the squad this year due to being drafted??

That squad contained several players that Finch wanted to take a look at but Dante's name disappeared from the list very quickly so maybe it was found he wasnt eligible?

Apparently both his parents were in the US Forces but Vilanova official site says he was born April 22, 1987 in Clinton, Maryland.

Now somewhat confused

With him being a early 2nd rounder in the draft his chances of being an NBA player are slim so Europe would be a variable option for him.

So if there is any chance of him gaining a GB passport he will probably be advised to do so by his agent as he would be more desirable to European teams as an EU player rather then taking up of foreigner/non-EU spot.

That Hankey Fella who is in the GB squad is a perfect example of this and Sean Banks was probably advised to do so, last summer as well.

I follow the Blazers as much as possible and came across this in an interview with Kevin Pritchard, Blazers GM.

MR: How is Rudy doing this summer?
KP: He’s doing fantastic. I talked to him about a week ago. He’s getting ready for the National League team. We have 2 guys on that team. Batum will play on the French team. Freeland will play on the English team. I was just told but can’t verify it, but Dante Cunningham has an English passport. I guess I should know that.

Link: KP Interview. It's about half way down.

Although it's by no means anything official, and he may not have an English passport, I thought it might be of interest to some of you.

Cunningham actually had a fairly impressive summer league. Posted 18.3ppg and 5.8rpg and in the couple of games I watched he seemed like he had a very nice mid range jumpshot. The word is that he may well get a roster spot with the Blazers next year.

As the blazers have lost Channing Frye and seem to be targeting Andre Miller, the backup four spot could be challenged by both Freeland and Cunningham, hopefully the guy has that passport

If he has a GB passport it would also give him more options if he doesn't make the cut at the Trailblazers as he would be classified as EU player in europe.

Just to clarify this situation. I was speaking to Andrew Sullivan in Warsaw & he stated that Dante was born over here but it is was whilst his father was on milatry duty. So forget about it & put it to bed.

Maybe, but I don't think he'll apply for a passport. In any case this shouldn't be allowed.
