The Manchester Mystics Kelsey Bardsley has been accepted on a full scholarship at Panola College in Texas NJCAA division 1.

:clap Congrats to Kelsey- Best of luck from everyone here in Manchester!

I managed to get to Sunday's Women's scrimmage between GB's Under-20's and our World University Games team in one of Manchester's (Metropolitan?) University sports halls. Not the best quality of ball, neither team offering much of an offensive threat, but Bardsley was one of the better point guards on display for my money. Still needs to work on her left hand, strength, defense and foot speed, but she showed her solid passing game and was one of the few players to actually spark some offense (amazingly Sergio shouted at her after she made one particularly nice assist :notlistening and, in my view, he didn't give her enough court time despite her being the most natural ball handler in his squad :dunno ).

With Kelsey and Charlotte Stoddart both off to the States (and Sergio stepping down as coach), it's no wonder the Mystics are stepping down to Division 2. Hopefully we'll still be able to produce and develop our young talent; indeed, I expect the vast majority of Manchester's senior women next year to be under 20.

And now it seems they need a new coach too ....

Great opportunity for the right person.

It's been known since finals weekend that Mystics were without a coach.

The person would not only be coaching the division 2 side but the under 18s and also be the head coach of the women's programme, is a great opportunity for someone looking to make a step up the coaching ladder, as part of one of the best programmes in the country.

that's interesting- Sergio is a good coach but I didn't think James Bambury did that bad a job at Leeds last season

Sergio has taken up a job at the University and women's basketball was part of the job description. It has been known since May but then this is women's basketball. It had nothing to do with the performance of James Bambury

Just seen the fixtures and I'm pretty disapointed all but two games are in the afternoon at 3.30pm so I'm hardly going to see any this season. :sad Presumably that's with being in Division 2 is it?

Apparently there's a 4-team friendly tournament on tomorrow (Saturday 26th SEPT 2009) at the Amaechi Centre, reportedly featuring Mystics, Leeds, Nottingham and Barking Abbey.

Mystics have already won two pre-season games vs Div 2 opposition quite convincingly.

I believe Chris Straker is running the team for now...

Results
Barking went 3-0
Leeds 2-1
Nottingham 0-3
Mystics 1-2

Mystics beat Nottingham I was busy doing stats for Barking vs Leeds. Leeds looked good possibly missing a few key players? Barking looked well drilled and may be a surprise team this year, young team but looked good. Nottingham didn't look that bad despite the 0-3 result the final game (against Barking) was abandoned due to only having 4 fit players left as they only had 7 at the start of the day, one had gone home (Emma Pass) one was injured before the start of the last game (N14) and then in the 3rd quarter the lost another player who was hit by her own player falling into her knee, which she'd had a ALC on recently so better safe than sorry they called the game off not wanting to loose anymore players before the start of the season. I believe Caitlin Flood is expected at Nottingham and they were missing Kate Butters. Emma looked good in the Leeds game and they (probably) lost their 3 best players through the day.

Didn't actually see the mystics play (only 2 minutes of the 4th quarter against Leeds) so can't comment on how they did but they only lost to Barking by 4, Leeds by about 10 (I didn't notice the score at the end) and beat Nottingham so I'd expect them to do well in Division 2 this year.

Barking have some talent in their ranks a few players who will develop during the season I expect they will be in the top 6 this year.

Was good to see Nottingham bringing their new stats team along to have some practise before the season.

I believe Mark Clark was shouting :rant and swearing :censored at his young players even though it was only a friendly tournament and they were winning! :notlistening But who am I to question the methods of a guy with such an impeccable record of coaching international players?! Barking by name...

Notts could have challenged Sheffield if they'd kept the excellent Jill Glessner too, but it looks like she's gone to play in Norway.

I think Mystics might be justified in stepping down a division; they would probably be getting pounded most games in Div 1, but in Div 2 the youngsters can come through in a winning environment, and if an individual gets really good she can move on to a Div 1 team or the NCAA. Also, it may just be a one season thing, but it's still a shame not to have Div 1 women's ball at the Amaechi this year.

Mystics looked pretty good today too in outlasting Hatters II 80-61 in a game which was close for three quarters

The least said about Hatters 1's 119-9 win over Wellingborough the better- Phoenix have lost three of last seasons starting five to injury for the season

Mystics had a very scrappy game against Stockport, a trigger happy ref and the largest crowd of the season must have been 200 crammed people watching the game on court 3 @ the Amaechi Centre on Sunday (couldn't use the main court after the magic because there would have been no one suitable to put the bleachers away after the game).
Mystics were leading by 10 or more for most of the game, Stockport slowly closed the gap in the 4th but mystics managed to find their range again late on to pull out the win. Stockport had 4 ex-mystics in their ranks and they all seemed determined to beat their former club, though in the end it wasn't to be.

Didn't see the Stockport game but saw the Preston game the night before, my first taste of Div 2 basketball before I've never really followed it and was pretty shocked at the poor standard by the away team not to mention they only had 6 players (is this allowed at EBL level?) and a coach who looked way out of his depth.
After looking at other results over the last couple of weeks the number of complete blow outs some of the teams are really below par. You have to wonder why they are playing in Div 2 as they should be playing local league and even then they wouldn't be a top team. There are better teams in the Womens Leeds League just for starter!

On the other had total domination for the Mystics and some excellent play at times I don't know who are brand new players or who has come up the ranks but it was virtually a brand new team as opposed to last years Div 1 team if anyone could shed some light that would be great?

Returning players in the mystics squad are: Nicki Blakeway, Emma Macready, Chelsea Tensel, Nicolette FongLyewQuee, and Maeve Higham (not sure about Jessica Tensel).

Players moving up the ranks: Rachel Barnes, Charlotte Hughes, Ashley Woodacre, Tracey Caton, and Holly Rush.

I think Jade Samuels and Shahad Jarad played for the youth team last year.

Amy Bowen played for Cheshire Jets last season (Ellesmere Port junior), Alleana Reddy and Leila Benyahiawas were both Ellesmere port Juniors in 2007-8, though I don't know about 2008-09 season for those two.

Pauline Thivillier is at Manchester Uni (is listed in a report as opening the scoring after 38 secords for them)http://www.student-direct.co.uk/2009/10/women-extend-unbeaten-record/ I think she is new to the set up.

we only have Div 1 and Div II for women. so if Preston want to play in the national league nobody is going to stop them.

At the moment we have a problem with the women's game. Manchester should have stayed in Division 1 and battled it out with Barking, Sevenoaks and company but as it took for ever to find a coach and the departure of some players they decided to drop down a level. Due to the fact that so many of the players are still U18, they still have the chance in playing in some decent youth games until the Div 2 play-offs.

I believe the drop is not doing the players any good in terms of development but then what do I know, let wait for the play-offs

All the same nice of you guys for keeping this tread going

I think you're probably right about that and they did manage to beat Northumbria in the cup something the didn't do last year. Hopefully I'll get to see at least one of the games next weekend if I have time I'll try and post some match reports as I did last season on here.

More due to the cost, unfortunately we were unable to secure funding to see us through the year, our lack of players on some game days was due to work commitments and illness. It a shame money dictates nowadays because we felt we were making good progress considering it's our first year. Hopefully with the experience gained as to what it takes, we can give it another go in the years to come. For the development of womens basketball in Lancashire it's a shame but we will preserve with a programme with potential. I'd just like to wish the rest of the league the best of luck, and say thanks for having us!
