For those who follow the Bristol Academy Flyers EBL1 team, here is some information for you.

Team website is now www.bristolacademyflyers.co.uk
Flyers fan site is www.unofficialflyers.webs.com

Flyers have signed two new players for the 2008/09 season in the shape of Brody Bishop and John Grazioli.

Abe Ahmed retired last season, Adam Simons and Ryan Williams also departed.

This year the Flyers are introducing some of their young academy players into the team, to give them a chance in the big league. So far they have handled the changes very well, and should get frequent team places during this season.

Gareth Till has remained as Captain, and with most of last years team staying on again this season, we look forward to a great year.

Dont forget to post your Flyers thoughts on here.

This might be a really silly question but ama ask anyway.

My cousins are big Bristol Rovers fans and they take me to games when I'm in town. Didn't they have a player called Grazioli? Is he a relation?

Good luck to Derby against you guys on Saturday, won't be there myself but games agianst you guys have always been very competitive so hope this is another one of those.

Flyers are taking on Taunton Tigers this weekend, (Nov 8th), and are hoping to turn around their recent bad luck.

The game against Derby ended 82 - 88, so congrats to Derby. This game is available to watch online. (see link in EBL General chat).

Oh and thanks to Hersey for answering the football question. :clap

Assuming you went to the game against Derby, what did you think?

I think the small travelling contingent from Derby thought it was a thrilling game. To pull off a win with two regular starters and three or four bench players was an astonishing achievement.

Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the game as I was at a wedding that day, but from what I have been told it was a very good game, and one Derby deserved to win. I am however going to try and watch it at www.sportuk.tv and make my own mind up.

On a happier note, (for Flyers fans anyway), Flyers have taken a last minute win against a very strong Taunton Tigers team, who really pushed the Flyers all the way. Final score was Tigers 85 - 86 Flyers.

Next game is away against London Leopards on the 16th November. Tip off is at 16:00.

Flyers travelled to Brentwood on Sunday, to take on the London Leopards in their second clash this season. Flyers were leading at half time, and with only 24 seconds left were still holding a 6 point advantage, when Leopards Karl Lathem-Henry collided with Greg Streete, leaving Karl needing medical treatment at Queeens Hospital Romford.
It was a great relief that Lathem-Henry was later diagnosed with neck ligament injuries rather than anything more serious.
The game however was abandoned, and we now await a statement from England Basketball on the result.

Flyers 2 remain top of division 4 South West following a 54 - 52 win against Plymouth Cannons.

Our junior teams are doing well too.

There is also a competition there to win a family ticket to the final home league game of the season against Sheffield.
Sheffield fans are more than welcome to enter, to get free entry to this game.

Fans of the Long Tall Order, Bristol Academy Flyers are wondering if Coach Kapoulas and the team have been told of a new trophy, " :nails The Nail Biter :nails ", as they once again left it till late in the last quarter to secure a win against Coventry Crusaders.

Flyers led for nearly all the game, but mid way in the 4th, a good run of points from Coventry, saw them briefly take the lead, loose it, and then get it back again.

The full time score was Flyers 82 - 77 Crusaders.

I dont think that anyone who was there, could say that the game wasn't value for money, and as an extra treat, the Bristol Academy Dancers provided half time entertainment.

A free throw contest for juniors was also held at half time, with the eventual winner walking away with a signed basketball.

The remaining 24 seconds of the abandoned match against London Leopards is now due to be played before the start of the two teams next clash, early in 2009.

Flyers next home game will be against Manchester Magic on December 6th with a 7pm tip-off.
Next away game is against Tees Valley Mohawks with a 6:30pm tip-off

Congratulations to the Flyers on the win.

This Saturday, (Dec 6th), Flyers host Division Manchester Magic, who are currently 2nd in the league.

Flyers will start the game without Matt Annalts who is out with a damaged knee, which we hope heals rather quickly.
This may force Coach Kapoulas to start with a few more of the young Academy players, who have been joining the senior team this season, but with Hutchinson back to full strength, things are still looking bright in the Filton camp.

Other games this weekend are:-

U18's Away to Southampton on Sunday
U16'S Host Plymouth on Saturday at noon
U15's are due to play Swindon Sonics and Southampton Trailblazers
U13's travel to Solent Kestrals

Flyers 2 will have to wait till next weekend to try to maintain their lead in Div 4, when they take on Bristol Storm.

Good luck to all teams for this weekend.

Good performance from Magic yesterday against a very decent Flyers team. I think the final margin of 8 didn't really reflect the dominance that Magic acheived in the first 33 or so minutes, but a strong 4tg Q in particular from Streete meant Magic had to work til the final buzzer.

Flyers mostly cut off the 3 point shooting of Magic's guards but just didn't have any answer for Taner Adu's drives to the hoop, and Kimbrough's midrange game. Quieter game from Gill, who it looked like they'd done their homework on, but a very strong game from Steve Boonham, particularly in the 4th quarter. It's a much less deep bench this year so the starters really have to win the game, and they performed very well in this game.

Good atmosphere and set up down at Filton though, good appreciative crowd and I think Bristol are probably more balanced than Magic with the two big men (#s 12 and 14) and obviously Streete is a handful, Bishop good from outside but a bit one dimensional maybe? Magic's perimeter D wasn't great in the first half, but Bishop shot the lights out. I think Bristol do need a better option at point because Magic got a lot of cheap points off the press and from steals in the first half.

If Flyers could do us a favour and beat Reading, that would be lovely.

I think you summed that up quite well there, Thirtythr33. Far to many easy chances given away, and the ones we had back were all to often missed.

The speed of the initial Magic attacks seemed to catch the Flyers off guard a little, and as with most sports, when you fall so far behind, its never easy to catch up again.

All credit to the Flyers though who pushed hard in the last half, especialy Streete, who was a real star again.

The crowd was really great this week, a lot of them were there for their first time too. The recently started Hoops for Healthy Hearts program, taking Basketball into local Primary Schools, has help boost interest in the game down here.

As for the Reading Game, I'm sure the boys will do their best to beat them for you :)

Shame we lost, but at least it was to a team that will go far this season.

Final Score was 60 -91 to Rockets. Flyers started off very strong, and for most of the first quarter, seemed to be able to hold Reading back. Rockets failed to capitalise on the opportunities they were given, and were punished by Grazioli and the lads.

However, it was the Flyers themselves who lost the game, missing many an opportunity to take the lead.

Derby did a good job of keeping our league alive, with a narrow win over the Leopards last night, and with the latter facing Reading this afternoon, we could well be in with a very good chance of a top three finish this season. There's still a long way to go though, and some tough matches ahead in 2009, so we can't count our chickens just yet.

Merry Christmas to all everyone in EBL and Happy New Year.

Well if you count the match with 24 seconds to play as a win for flyers we're on the same points as the Leopards now.

Was surprised to see Lee Treasure sitting in the crowd in your photos, hope nothing serious.

Hi Huw.

No, Lee is now playing for Flyers II. His brother, Tyrone is still in the senior team, and was a major scorer again this weekend.
Lee seems to be doing well with Flyers II, a team who themselves are proving they are no push over in Division 4.

Some good news for Flyers was that Reading did the double, beating Leopards on Sunday.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations to the Flyers Under 13's who took their second big win over Reading Rockets II (u13's), notching up a 110 -21 win. Last week they beat the same team by 101 - 38.

Flyers II and U18's games were both cancelled this weekend, and the U16's were given a 20 - 0 win against Dorset Storm.

The fan site, www.unofficialflyers.webs.com continus to bring you the latest news on the Bristol Flyers teams, and welcomes new members.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. :party

Well the new year is well and truly with us, and the season is now well up to speed again.

Flyers had their first game of the year away to Reading, and it was not the start they hoped for. Reading comfortably won by 85 - 49.

For the next game, Flyers faced Taunton Tigers at the WISE Campus in the National Trophy. Taunton took an early advantage in the first, but it was a very strong finishing Flyers team that won the game by 98 -83. Photos and videos of this game are available to view on the supporters website, and Youtube.

Flyers II have had an equaly bad start with a home loss against Worcester, (55 - 70), but turned it around this weekend with a 64 - 78 win away to Gloster Jets.

Flyers senior team now have Cardiff and London Leopards to play in the next 7 days, the latter including the unplayed 24 seconds of the match that was stopped late last year. Flyers lead by 6 points and will hope for early possession to run the clock down. Leopards however will not give up easily, and will try their best to tie the game in the last few seconds.

In the Leopards game last 6 seconds who starts with possession? We were shouting at the ref to stop the action as Flyers came away with the ball and the ball ended in the basket, but I'm not sure whether the ref blew before or after the basket. I didn't think that the points went on but it was all very confusing.

* The final 24 seconds of the game are to be played in Bristol on Sunday 25th January, the score currently being London Leopards 86 - 92 Bristol Academy Flyers.

* Only personnel listed on the original score sheet can play in the remaining 24 seconds

* The players on court at the time of the incident are to remain the players on court at the start of the 24 seconds, with London Leopards substituting one player in to replace the injured player, Carl Latham-Henry, who is not permitted to take any part in the remaining 24 seconds.

Flyers fans were treated to two games for the price of one on Sunday evening, both against London Leopards.

First up was the final 24 seconds of the game that was abandoned back in November. With Flyers leading by 6 points, and in possession of the ball at the re-start, it was always going to be hard for Leopards to win. A quick foul sent Greg Streete to the line and one point added to the score. Leopards No 12, Gareth Laws, hit back with a 3 pointer but it was two more penalty points, one for Captain Till and the other from Rob Loftman that took the final score to 95 – 89 in Flyers favour.

In the second game Flyers faced Leopards in the National Trophy. A strong Leopards team including the recent signing Ronnie Baker, started well, but Flyers were determined not to let them go too far ahead and tried everything they could to hold them back. Leopards got a few quick points before the end of the quarter and ended with a 10 point lead.

The second quarter saw a more determined Bristol team take to the court, and with a few errors by the Leopards team, they brought the deficit in the score down to 4 points at the interval. From the start of the 3rd, it was getting more and more evident that it was going to be no easy task to win the game, and even though Flyers drew level a few times it was going to be Leopards night, and they took the game with a ten point cushion. Final score. Flyers 63, Leopards 73.

Although it was not a double victory, the Flyers can hold their heads high on what was a fantastic display of basketball at the WISE Campus.

Flyers Coach Andreas Kapoulas commented on his team’s performance after the game: ‘First of all we are pleased to secure a really important league victory against Leopards. There are not going to be a lot of teams that will beat them on their home court so this win is going to be useful towards the final league table position.’ He went on to add: ‘Obviously we are disappointed not to go through to the Trophy semi-final; however for us the league is the more important of the two. Leopards had a lot more depth and size than us and that was crucial in determining the result of the trophy game. We put out a really young team with 8 academy students due to a number of injuries. It was a great experience for them. All the guys did really well and worked hard we just did not have the required energy to keep up with Leopards physical aspect. We really missed Tom Hutchinson’s size on the defensive end and Brody Bishop’s experience on the offensive part of our game. Now we can concentrate on the league. Despite our injury problems, our target is a top four finish and an improvement on last year’s achievements’.

Flyers are also due to take on Cardiff this Saturday in the Welsh Capital City, but due to problems with the venue, the game has been switched to the WISE Campus in Bristol, (Flyers home court). Tip off is at 7pm.

CELTS V's Flyers
As mentioned before, the game between Cardiff Celts and the Flyers was switched to the WISE Campus, following problems in the Welsh Capitol.
The game turned into a real battle with Cardiff setting the pace int the first quarter, leading the Flyers by 7 points. This was reduced to 3 by the half time buzzer, but Flyers Coach, Andreas Kapoulas was not a happy man.
Following a rather vocal half time team talk, Flyers emerged with some fire back in their game, scoring 19 points in the third whilst Cardiff could only get 6 i reply. But once again, the combination of a slight drop in the Flyers game, and the Welsh determination took over, and the score difference came tumbling down.
Flyers held their nerve though and ended with a 67 - 63 win.

Also in action over the weekend were the Flyers U18's who travelled to Reading for their game. Unfortunately, Reading were just too strong for the Flyers squad, and beat the Bristol team by 87 - 79.

Other News.
For fans of Basketball, Cardiff Celts are playing a few of their home games at the WISE Campus at the moment, the next being this Saturday when they take on Coventry Crusaders. Feel free to come along.
I will try and find out the Tip off time and post it on here later.

UPDATE
Tip off for the Celts V's Crusaders game is 18:30
