I actually lost 2 BBL clubs- Calderdale in 1988 and Celtics in 1995. Still remember those days and wonder if Mr UKR might be lured into posting in here. |

I have fond memories of my one Oldham Celtics match - when the club was on the verge of folding and played the Bullets with 6 players. It was nice to watch a match without my heart in my mouth that season! |

Hi Mark. I think I recall that day at the NIA. Adrian Anderson, who later moved on to the Sharks, played about 3 times as many minutes as normal and top scored with about 32 points. |

How many top flight teams no longer exist then, going back say, 30 years? Obviously the recent ones in the last decade add up to quite a list on their own but there must be several going further back. I guess it depends if you count teams that merged, moved or were taken over. Forget exactly, but didn't Crystal Palace get merged with or taken over by London Towers for example? The list would be too long if you went for NBL/EBL teams as well so top flight only, how many? Edited by Sam_H, Nov 27 2008, 04:54 PM.

CP merged with the Brunel and Uxbridge Ducks to become BCP London, won the play offs in their first year and then folded thereafter! Other top flight teams from back in the day that are no longer around include Warrington Vikings, Manchester United, Homespare Bolton, Olympic City Giants (Mike Shaft's team), Sperrings Solent Stars, Tyneside, Kingcraft Kingston Kings, Bracknell Pirates, Portsmouth, Calderdale Explorers, MIM Livingston, Glasgow Rangers, London Docklands, Hemel and Watford Rebels and no doubt a few others who I can't think of right now. |

Of those, Hemel became MK Lions and Solent survived for a while in the EBL Also on the missing list are Oldham Celtics and Doncaster Panthers |

Now this was before my time - but I was thinking of the Crystal Palace team that was around in the mid 90s, think their final season was 97-98 or 98-99? I think this was when Towers were still at Wembley and very good, while CP floundered at the bottom with the Bears. But not long after they were gone. Did they not merge or get taken over by the Towers who then moved to the CP sports centre? Edited by Sam_H, Nov 30 2008, 07:41 AM.

Did a "London Docklands"team exist?? I know that Crystal Palace were known as"London Docklands Crystal Palace" for a season or too in the mid 80's.(When my childhood hero Bubba Jenning's played for them!!) I thought that Palace got taken over by the London Towers team?? This was, of course, some 20 odd years ago and, rather stupidly,I didn't keep hold of my copies of "Basketball Monthly" magazine which I used to buy regularly. Shame there isn't a modern version of that mag.It used to report British Basketball really well from what I can remember. Any of you fellow "Oldies" (Well I'm 40 next year.) still have any copies of that magazine?? |
