Number 6. Can you explain what you mean by 'benefits have to be a two-way thing'?

Trevor

Defoe actually tried to go abroad the year before he came to newcastle. He had a bad experience in France and learned that being promised something on the continent does not actually mean it will arrive.

If you're 18/19 (16 if you're really good and keen) what would you rather do? Practice a few times a week with a few good players and a few local league standard players, sit on a bench for 40 minutes and go to local uni/work in McDonalds OR go to an organistion with its own 3,000 seater stadium, weight room, cheerleaders etc etc and probably get to play at a higher level?

But if you are that good to play at a higher level then you wont be setting on a bench in the BBL for 40 minutes. Are you really suggesting Andre Rankine was good enough to go and get a job in europe?

Finally certainly the top BBL teams do not have local league standard players practising with them.

I was referring to the US College v BBL option not Euope, since I cannot think of any ex Sheffield Juniors who have gone to Europe. Defoe is held out as a player that has succeeded following the BBL route which is why I mentioned him. I was not suggesting he should have gone to Europe, merely pointing out that we will never know how good he would have been if he had gone to US college for 4 years.

I'm pretty certain I didn't mention Andre Rankine. However, he was an awesome prospect at 14, but he has not made the most of it. I am sure that he must accept some of the responsibility for that, but he was also let down by the people around him.

The fact remains that Sharks are struggling to retain local talent (NvO the latest to leave for the US) Why is that? Are these people making the wrong decision, because the inference is that they are?

DF - I assume from your final comment that you no longer class Sharks as a top BBL team then.

The Sharks have signed 7 solid pros with another to come and I understand their bench will consist of junior sharks. Not sure who the local league guys are in that bunch.

The point re Defoe is taken, we can`t speculate.

There's been a lot of talk over the last few posts, more so over the previous page, about late arrivals of new players and how they gel once they arrive.

The point about how they gel really bugs me because of last season. Once the players arrived at the club it was as if none of them cared about what was required of them and everyone was out for themselves and SEEMED to not give two hoots about how the team performed in the league.

The really annoying thing was that none of them listened to Scants most of the time either, even when he did show moments of being ever so slightly firey and aggressive in his coaching style.

Once this new crop arrive and the fact we have a totally different coaching style to look forward to, lets hope that they play as a 'team' and for 'each other' rather than most of the shambolic selfish style of play we witnessed last season from a large chunk of the squad.

In the end Niesler was still too expensive for the Sharks budget I am told. Shame.
