Olympiacos Piraeus has announced that Greek icon Panagiotis Giannakis has taken over the bench after Pini Gershon was dismissed. The 49-year-old Giannakis also serves as the Greek national team coach. His first game in charge at Olympiakos was a classic ........ a 2-point win in the Greek Cup semi final against the club that he made his name with, as a player .....Aris TT Bank Salonika !

Giannakis had a legendary career as a player, during which he won his country's first Euroleague crown, a European national title, a Cup Winners' Cup and more than dozen Greek League and Greek Cup titles. He played for Ionikos Nikaia, Aris, Panionios, Panathinaikos and the Greek national team during his 25-year career. As a coach, he guided Greece to the crown at the 2005 EuroBasket and to the silver medal at 2006 World Championships in Japan.

Eurosport 2 viewers can catch this charismatic coach in action, this Sunday, February 10th, at 10pm (UK time), when Olympiakos are at home, for a Greek League game, and their opponents are..... none other than ARIS TT BANK SALONIKA !!!

Great player and a great character! Him and Galis vhanged the face of Greek basketball! Great defensive skills! He transmitted his skills in the National Team players where defense is an art ( and at the same time we managed to give 100 points to the american lads, Lebron who???? :laugh :party :tongue )

I wasnt that happy with his decision to coach Olympiakos, I' d prefer him to coach real Madrid and to see a Greek coach abroad but I think Real wanted him exclusively...

He couldn't say no to the National Team .....

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS 1987, 2005 , beaten the NBA guys to reach WORLD CUP FINAL... HELLAS 4VER
