http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/01/...riton_in_a.html Sure that this wont be the last article on the eligibility of players for the GB teams -a debate that we've already seen on this board on the past. Article suggests that Gordon is now interested in playing for GB, which is a change of heart from him if true. In my view if national papers are starting to take an interest on who is playing for the GB basketball team that has to be a good thing. With no GB countries qualifying for Euro 2008 believe that the mainstream media will be more receptive to covering the GB teams this summer - esp as we are now playing with the big teams in Div A. |

The article then goes on to talk about football and concludes that foreign born players should never be allowed to play for England (Arsenal's Manuel Almunia qualifies in 2009 on residency) I know it's an age old debate though..... |

This stuff gets my goat. Whats the betting he is a BMP member. Total idiot, who has chosen to ignore two great sports in Cricket and Rugby in his article. For some reason these always get ignored them when some lame journalist chooses to take up this argument. In saying that, I still don't want to see Gordon in a uniform. |

I really doubt that this guy has any new information regarding the Gordon situation. |

Reckon that the Guardian journo got his info from the Ian Whittell article in the Times last month. I missed this over the Xmas period http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/us_...icle3101573.ece Whilst I understand Backboard's reluctance re: Gordon as unlike Deng - who has always supported the development of British basketball - his committment to British ball is negligible. I agree with Finch and think we should be entering the strongest possible team that we can of players eligible for the GB team. My hope is that this GB team will provide the inspiration for a next generation of ballers so that we don't have to 'recruit' in the future. |

J Holden, the american lad scored the winning basket for Russians in the final of eurobasket 2007 American born Nick Galis ( of Greek parents) revolutionised basketball in Greece in 80's "recruitment" has always been a part of sport.. I think if somene is eligible toplay for a country then let him/her play the Laws and regulations have many windows and if other nations are exploiting that windows why GB shouldn't? It is my belief that UK and GB in general has a a great potential in basketball.. You are a big country and there is definately plenty of space in basketball development when someone is interested in the sport in GB and lawfully qualifies to participate then he's got the right to do so |

The problem is that despite the efforts of FIBA, it isn't an even playing field. In the UK, you have to meet realistic requirements that are set in law and ruled on by the Home Office. In Russia we've recently seen people given Russian passports simply because someone went to Putin and said "this person can help our team win basketball games", then he signed a bit of paper and they got one (I'm not sure if they've bothered doing this with more men than just Holden, but both Becky Hammon and Deanna Nolan, world-class female American players, have recently been granted Russian passports). I hope it gets sorted and Buike gets a British passport and can play for us (and I'd happily take Gordon as well). Both of them have considerably more right to play for GB than several other people who'll be suiting up for other nations. |
