I am planning a wee trip to New York while the Rocks have no home games during early April. There is something called the 71st Annual NIT basketball tournament on at Madison Square Gardens (1 & 3rd April). Could someone please advise what this is? Who will be playing? And whether in ther opinion it would be better going to the semi double header or final? And is it worth going to? Many thanks in advance for you help to a truely confused Scot. Cheers |

The NIT Tourney is a fallback tourney for Colleges not good enough to make the 64-team NCAA 'March Madness' Tourney, this is probably the Final 4 of the NIT. It, obviously, won't be of the highest standard in the College game, but it should be competive. Hope that helps.

Because of the way the 65 teams are chosen for the NCAA tourney, the sides who make the NIT final are still better than many of the sdes in the main competition. So you'll be watching good quality games. It's given national TV coverage in the States, and although it isn't as important as it used to be, it still matters. If you can ony do one date, i would make it the semi's - you get two proper games, i think there is a 3rd place game but they generally suck. I'd buy your tickets quickly as well. |

It's sort of like the UEFA cup of college basketball. However it isn't that exciting to be honest. No one cares about it, it is played in a half empty arena and no one can tell you who won the last one. I would save my money if I were you. Certainly the Knicks will be playing and even though they are terrible the NBA standard is far above NCAA. |

I'm pretty sure South Carolina have won the past two NIT championships. And I bet Dave Odom cares cos winning the NIT has probably kept him in a job. Personally I'd go, you'll get to see some top notch college teams, anything would be better than the Knicks. |

You are kidding, yeah ? Knicks will be in the garbage time of another failed season by then. Thomas will still be coach, because the owner is an idiot. The tickets will cost a fortune for a game that won't matter to anyone. If you want to go to an NBA game, go to New Jersey. They are far better, the tickets are cheaper & you can get a bus from the centre of NY for about $8. If you want more details about Nets you can PM me, but seriously give your money to the Brian Dux fund before you piss it up the wall on Knicks |

Sorry I just can't stomach watching college basketball, the Knicks would beat the best NCAA team by at least 20 so I don't understand watching a lower standard. I watched Duke and Michigan last week and both teams were missing layups and couldn't hit a jump shot and made bad pass after bad pass. So then talking about an even lower standard is the NIT. Really, no one cares about the NIT. The game doesn't even sell out. Michigan won it a few years ago and it wasn't even mentioned in the media here. |

I'll take you point about non conference college games, I've watched a couple of real stinkers this week, but I'd take the NIT final 4 over an end of regular season game that certainly won't matter to the Knicks. All you'll see is a load of scrubs - though if you saw their starting five you'd be looking at a load of scrubs anyway. |

Well, it was a 30 point blowout in favour of UNC, despite that it was pretty enjoyable. Can't beat college sports for atmosphere |
