I personally would like a central venue. Coventry Sky Dome, i thought was a good venue in the early part of the decade, in which i saw some good international matches. With a capacity of 4000 it would be ideal, & realistic to fill for every game played. GB need some where they can call home, try and make a fortress, and can get used to lighting, baskets, floor etc. It's not a bad place to get to, and obviousley it's central in the country. |

Most Eurobasket crowds in Spain in the summer were averaged at around 8,500 - 9,000. 15,000 is very realistic. My target if I had to choose would be.. 3,500 - 4,000. If we got more than that - that would be awesome!! |

If you're going to have a permanent home for GB it HAS to be the O2! If it has the NBA drooling over it, use it regularly! Though having Deng and crew on my doorstep in Plymouth would be awesome as well, unlikely though. If they're not going for a permanent home at the O2, I'm going to call it as one game at the O2, one game outside England(probably Braehead) and one game in the Midlands/north England(various options including the NIA!). If it's a five team group, one game at the NIA, one in northern England. |

I enjoyed the game in the NIA- but how many where there at £5 per ticket? 3,000? How many were in Meadowbank? Now people are suddenly talking about £20.00 per ticket and getting 10-15,000 people in attendence. British basketball have to be practical and they have to try to aim and fill a 4-5,000 arena to start with. When we start to fill 4-5,000 arenas we can look at moving to larger venues. Is it a good thing to move it around the country- or have one designated British Basketball arena, like football has Wembley and play all the games and all the national finals at the same venue?? I think that at this stage it's better to move around the country but at places set up for basketball properly, with proper scoreboards with proper details. Living in the south I admit to a South bias and would prefer to see the games in London, Birmingham or the new MK arena when built. What I think is very important is that the games are held in places that have either a BBL or top EBL club and that the organisers work with the local clubs to try and do cross promotion, it may not help the British team mcuh but it should help support at the league levels. Try running coaching clinics before the game with the local club and one or two of the British team players, promote it to the hilt. |

Personally I would like to see the three home qualifiers at Braehead, NIA then The 02. Ideally I would like to see the games on the Olympic broadcaster the BBC. I thought they did ok with the Commonwealth games basketball and they could call the programme showing the games something like 'GB Basketball - Road to London 2012' which might get people watching the games just because it mentions the London Olympics (even though they are Euro qualifiers). Some people have said that The 02 is too big but with just the lower tier open I think it would be ok. Also The 02 are always sending me e-mails about events there because I went there to see the NHL games and the NBA exhibition game. That means that The 02 has the e-mails addresses of every person who bought tickets for that NBA game. Instead of sending an e-mail out saying 'GB Basketball at The 02' it would be better if The 02 were to send out an e-mail saying 'NBA stars back at The 02' and then open up the e-mail to find that it is an e-mail advertising NBA-er Luol Deng (and Kelenna Azuibuike..) playing for GB against, for example, Tony Parker and Boris Diaw for France or Mehmet Okur of Turkey etc. Also the tickets for a GB game would be well below the price for that NBA game at The 02. Do I expect to see any of this happen? well...er...no. Probably 1 or 2 games on Sky played at smaller venues. Oh well.... |

Good post Croxley! Maybe you should send it to a useless big wig at the BBF. You never know they make take your ideas on board. As soon as the draw is made moves have to be made. Firstly we need to sort venues out & decent ones asap. I personally would like to see them play at Brahead, MEN, NIA, 02 ARENA (IF WE GET A GROUP OF 5), but i'd settle for Brahead, Sheffield Arena, Liverpool Echo Arena, and NIA. Secondly advertisement must be spot on! BBL have to do there share. Plug it at every game, PA, posters, Flyers, programmes etc. Each BBL & EBL club should be involved. Why not let these clubs offer coach & match tickets (they could put a small charge on the combi. tickets to cover costs?). Something new, ie what the BBL have started. Get in touch with the big hotel chains & offer discounted rooms (travelodge, travel inn, premier lodge etc). A national paper advert, even if it is just once a week (can't be that expensive can it?) A radio advert in the area where the game is being played ie Manchester, XFM, KEY 103 etc (again is this too expensive?). finally TV, and if you believe what you read, the BBF are already talks with TV companies. Ideally i'd like it on terrestrial, maybe Channel 5 as i think there coverage of the NBA is really good, and they do touch on quite often Deng and the GB team. If not then whoever does show the games (TOUCH WOOD, RABBITS FOOT AND ALL THAT MALARKY), then i hope it is well presented, in depth etc. A really good shout from Croxley is the title, GB Basketball road to london 2012. That would really catch the eye & hopefully intrigue people. Whatever might happen, im just praying the BBF pull out all the stops they can to promote the most important year ever in British basketball history! |

I agree on the cross-promotion Saintpat but think Croxley Ben's post is well thought out they certainly know how to market an event at the O2. By the way its BPB running the show now inaminute23 - have no doubt that they will be in talks with TV companies - they'll have had a full run at things this year as well |

No need to apologise its been an alphabet soup of organisations involved with the GB team in the last couple of years. One more thing on Saintpat's point of games being held at BBL/EBL (such as ABC for women last year) venues - is that there can be a benefit for GB if the venues are announced early enough i.e. asap after the draw because GB tickets can then be sold at BBL/EBL games. |

Just checked out all the arena's websites that could possibly stage a GB qualifier & all them are free, apart from Braehead arena on 13th September. Come on BPB sort venues out whilst there plenty available. |

Venues to be announced in the next 60 days according to BPB document today. Hoped that it could have happened a bit earlier for BBL/EBL venues so that GB tickets could be pushed at reamining home games but all sorted by mid-April does give plenty of time for BPB to shift tickets |

Am I not right in saying that the venues will be decied by different cities bidding against each other to host the games? I think this is how the venue were worked out last year. Same process was used for the bbl play off weekend last year. Would like to see a game at Braehead - but to be honest i doubt it would be full. |

As we are playing Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday at home. I would like to see the games being played in the north, midlands, & south. So something like Brahead, NIA, and The O2. Even though venues won't be finalised till April, it doesn't mean the BBL clubs can't do there bit in promoting these games. |
