It's the news that pretty much every ball fan in the UK has been waiting for. But is it 100% confirmed? Kelenna will bring some much needed options for us at the guard spot if it is. Midgley Azubuike Deng Archibald/Sullivan Betts Thoughts? |

Great news. Would go with that line - up with Arch at PF. Sulli doesn't have the size at this level to play there. |

Going to be really interesting! At present im my opinion Lenzley is the best point guard we have, followed closely behind by Midgley. Sullivan is having an indifferent season, which doesn't seem to be getting going anytime soon. From stats i've read Betts & Archibald are having decent starts to there seasons as is Pops, but Benetton are strugggling. I have a sneaky feeling we will get drawn against Germany in our group so if i was to put a team out against them, paying particular attention to Dirk, i'd start with.... BETTS ARCHIBALD DENG AZUBUIKE LENZLEY To round the rest of the squad off MIDGLEY POPS REINKING SULLIVAN CLARKE ? ? Strong enough? I think so. |

Midgley is a consistant guard and Lenzly isn't in my view. When he's hot, he's HOT but can go cold as well. He was awful against Ireland, but then again - that was a friendly. Him and Rich should be a good battle for the starting places which is almost a dream to say for GB basketball. Just been reading through Drew's stats. Obviously with Finch as his coach at both club and country. Maybe he can get Sulli to work that extra bit harder but agreed, I'd put Archibald at the PF position. Starting 5? Midgley Azubuike Deng Archibald Betts Bench Lenzly Sullivan Haslam Huggins Reinking Joel Freeland? James Jones? Now the name Pops comes to mind - ohhh the choices!! |

Pops has to be in there as we need as much fire power as possible. Huggins has retired, but not a bad replacement in Pops! Possibly would take Haslam as he has played Div A before & is having a good season (scoring wise). Would you take James Jones as a shooting guard? Maybe next year is a bit too soon for him, but definately one to keep an eye on. All in all we will have a very well balanced squad with many different options we can put on the floor. What we need is at least 3 scoring threats on the floor, one of these has to be a guard. I think we will see more 3 point offences run especially in warm up games to see how we cope, as GB has never had a consistent 3 point threat. If we can get regular open looks for Reinking, Midgley, Lenzley & Azubuike, our inside game, & defence hopefully will take care of itself. Here's a question. Of the teams in Divison A, who can match our forward line up of Deng Betts Archibald Pops Sullivan Azubuike |

Hopefully Kelenna will join up with the squad this summer although I guess that might depend on whether his NBA spot is secure or not? |

I think its safe to say that Kelenna will not be worrying about a contract for next season. Whilst a squad with him and Pops in is a massive step forward from last summer, I worry about our PG position. I fear that both Midg and Lenzly will be liabilities at that level. |

I think we will be alright at the pg position. Midgley & lenzley have come on leaps & bounds, and will only get better. Granted they won't set the world alight, but they are more than competent to do a good job in Division A. Well spotted fanofleopards about Germany already being qualified. This surely Gives GB a boost ahead of February draw knowing some of the big guns won't be there. Who would you like to see in our group? I'd be happy with this..... GB ISRAEL (Would bring a great following for the home leg) PORTUGAL (Over the last few years they have beaten us a few times...payback!!) CZECH REPUBLIC UKRAINE Whoever we draw we have nothing to fear. |

I wouldn't be so sure about that. He's playing on a contract that has a player option for next season which he's clearly out-performing, so he'll be opting out. That'll leave him without a contract for next season, and that's exactly the situation where several guys have stayed out of international competition in case they get hurt. I think he'll only be playing for us next summer if his contract negotiations get done quickly, which seeing as he'll be looking for multiple years at something approaching the whole mid-level exception might not be a formality. I hope it gets done fast and he's over here, but I think it's far from a certainty at this point. |

Reckon you might be worrying about that from now and until 2012 Backboard. Agree with inaminute23 you'd expect Midgley (first pro-season) and Lenzley (playing in Euro comp and in a decent league for the GB coach) to be much improved. Been told that Boyd is on a par if available. Think many teams in the pot with us would take our forwards and our back-court concerns. With the very elite removed from this qualifying there wont be team without major flaws and probably wont be a country who get all their major players to play. |

I would expect the Warriors to pick up his contract at that level and for him to accept, you obviously see it differently Richyyy. |

It's a player option, not a team option, according to what I've read. That means it's Kelenna's choice whether to stay under that deal, or opt-out and sign a new contract with whichever team he likes (for however much he can get). The option won't be worth any more than about $800,000, which he's comfortably out-performing right now. Assuming the info is right that it's a player option, I don't think there's a chance in hell of him doing anything other than opting out. |

Unless Stephen Jackson or Monta Ellis leave in the summer, I can't see Kelenna staying at the Warriors if he has a choice. He proved to most people he was capable in a starting role while Jackson was suspended but, now Jackson is back, Azu has been relegated to a 20mpg energy player off the bench which I'm not sure he'll be willing to accept for another year if another team is willing to give him a starting berth.

Fair point I suppose. I don't see who it is that K A will start for mind you. My assumption was that he would drop the current contract and then resign with the warriors. From what I have been told his style fits with nellie. |

I've never seen him play on the international stage. He is a perfect fit for Nellie's system, but there must be a reason they were able to pluck him from the D League. Nellie can make mediocre players look great. Stephan Jackson is looking like an all star after being nothing more than a role player with the Spurs. Matt Barnes was hugely influential in the Warriors run last year after nobody else even wanting him on their roster. It would appear that Buike has all the tools. He can hit the 3. He is great at posting up smaller guards. He can finish strong in traffic. He gets on the glass. But looks can be deceiving. It remains to be seen how he will look with Midgely as his PG and when the opposing defense pay him more attention. Chris Finch is no Don Nelson either. I also disgaree with the assertion that he can start for a number of NBA teams. I expect him to stay with the Warriors, provided Nelson wants him. |

I think he's pretty damn good, and he's clearly improving as well (he's noticeably better this year than he was last year). He does fit well in Golden State's system, but I think he could fit for a lot of teams given the chance. He's a little shorter, but he actually reminds me of his teammate Stephen Jackson (only less of a headcase) - he can shoot, he's pretty quick, and he's gonna be bigger/stronger than several guys he matches up against (and has the post moves to take advantage of that). Jackson was valuable in San Antonio's system as well back in the day, not just GS. Buike's problem in getting paid next summer is going to be that wings are the most widely available commodity in the NBA and often get overlooked unless they have one outstanding skill (3-point shooter, outstanding defense etc.). Being good at lots of things but maybe not great at anything (yet) might leave him under the radar a bit. I like him a lot, and think he'd fit nicely at the other wing spot for us alongside Deng (which would give Sullivan the chance to be a spark off the bench backing up both of them). |

Why was he plucked from the D-League, where did he come from etc? Well here's a little background for those that don't know... He was a decent, but not star-quality, College player at Kentucky who, along with teammate Randolph Morris now of the Knicks, over-estimated themselves and entered the Draft early. He went undrafted and, without the chance to go back to College like Morris somehow swindled, he tried out in the Summer League, Training Camps and eventually ended-up in the D-League, where he was the top-scorer in the entire League (over 26ppg if my memory serves) when GS handed him a 10-day contract when Davis, or Ellis can't remember, went down. He played well enough to turn that into a 'rest of the season' deal and then the 1 year deal with a player option that he has now. ...and just like that, I've found a piece on him on the Yahoo! website! The Warriors and Azubuike will rise |
