The new NCAA season started last night with a bang from one of the most touted Freshmen in the College Game. One of the quickest players to hit the College scene in years, 6'4 PG Derrick Rose had 17pts 6rebs and 5ass, including 4 dunks, as the Memphis Tigers beat Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks 102-71 in the opener of the Coaches vs Cancer tourney.

Chris Douglas-Roberts had a 'quiet' 28pts and 8rebs to lead the Tigers, but all eyes were on Freshman Rose, who is widely expected to be a 'One-and-Done' NBA Lottery pick next year, and he didn't disappoint. Blocking a shot on an opponent's breakaway at one end, then flying down the lane and throwing down a dunk on an opposing C down the other all within 20secs. Nice!

Hope to get a few chances to see him on NASN as the season progresses. Memphis have returned all 5 starters from last year's team that went to the Sweet 16 and, with Rose there to add a bit of flair, they are widely tipped to go further than that this year. :wink

Didn't have to wait long for the 1st major upset of the year then. The #20 Kentucky Wildcats were absolutely stuffed 84-68 by relatively unknown Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in the 2nd round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic which benefits Coaches vs Cancer. The win means Gardner-Webb, not Kentucky, will go on to Madison Square Garden as the Kentucky Regional winner and a place in the Semi Finals. This game counts against the Wildcats record, so you can bet they won't be in the top 25 after this weekend.

Last year's NCAA runners-up Ohio State (minus Oden, Conley and Cook admittedly) lost to NCAA Division II team Findlay in their Final exhibition game! They were the 2nd Big Ten School to lose to Division II opposition in a week, after #8 Michigan State lost to Grand Valley State on Saturday night.

Star Freshman Derrick Rose continued where he left off in the 1st round, scoring 21pts as Memphis beat Richmond in the 2nd round of the 2K Sports - Coaches vs Cancer Tourney, meaning they have won the Memphis Regional and will continue onto the Semis at MSG next Wednesday.

For those of you confused by the 2K Tourney, there are 4, 4 team, Regionals in Conneticut, Kentucky, Memphis and Oklahoma, with the winners of each going on to MSG to contest the Semis and Final next week. The usual idea is to match the Big Boys against the Mid-Majors in the Regionals, so you'd expect to get UCONN, Oklahoma, Memphis and Kentucky at MSG, but upsets obviously do occur occassionally! :laugh

Great stuff for Magic product Andrew Lovedale as his Davidson team narrowly failed to beat North Carolina the other night, but Lovedale scored 12 points on 6/7 shooting and pulled down 6 rebs in 21 minutes.

Did anyone watch the double-header on NASN Saturday night? UNC completely trashed NC State, but the Georgetown-UCONN game was just fantastic.

Watching a 7'2 C step back and swish the game-winning 3ptr was just amazing. Roy Hibbert adds another string to his bow! As for his 'battle' with 7'3 Thabeet, well there really was only one winner. I'd been reading that Thabeet, despite his height, has no real shot at being a great player and Saturday proved it. 7pts 2rebs in 23mins? At 7'3 you would've thought he could grab more than 2rebs? OK, he can block shots, but he just has to stand still and swat them at the College level, in the Pros he'd get burned by more mobile players and Hibbert showed him exactly how it's done by scoring 20pts on him.

Hibbert moved another step up the Lottery with that performance. As the old saying goes, "You can't teach height" and though Hibbert is a Senior and has less 'potential' than some of the Freshman and Sophs that'll go Pro in this year's Draft, I still see him going in the top-7.

Call me stupid, but .......!!!!
Could someone please explain the timings for the college game, is it 2 halves
of 20 mins each ??

I am new to the college game, but finding it difficult at the moment to remember to watch on TV, as the games seem to tip-off so late, not ideal on a work night !!

Most of the games are replayed the next day on NASN around tea time. That's when I watch them anyway! :wink

Last night had an absolute CLASSIC #25 Baylor defeated #18 Texas A&M 116-110 in 5OTs!!! Wish I'd got a chance to see it, but it wasn't on NASN's schedule.
