21st October Guildford Heat 95 - 79 MK Lions Referee's - Dale Aitcheson, Neil Wilkinson, Chris Dodds Starting 5's Heat - 5 Dean Williams - 12 James Jones - 22 Daniel Gilbert - 11 Mike Martin - 23 Carlton Aaron Lions - 10 Terrell Brown - 7 Kevin Griffin - 13 Peter Heizer - 6 Shawn Jamision 15 Mike New 1st Quarter A very scrappy start from both sides which saw the return to the bench for the Heat of BBL MVP, Brian Dux. As both teams lost on Friday they were both keen to get back to winning ways. The game opens with a Mike Martin dunk, after Lions missed a mid range jumper and another open jumper from mid range leads to Dean Williams speeding up court and feeding Daniel Gilbert for a second transition bucket to quickly make it 4-0 to the Heat. Lions finally hit back with Mike New, and they continued to come back at Guildford, easily breaking their full court press to another Mike New score to tie the game mid way through the period at 8. Gilbert has other ideas though and restores Guildford's slender advantage to 12-8. The crowd's noise gets a little higher with the introduction of Dux for Dean Williams with 3:49 left in the quarter and straight away, looks to set up others but Heat aren't complimenting his sharp passing with buckets. Lions, like Guildford finding it hard to convert their jumpers as Kevin Griffin and Terrell Brown rim out three balls and are having no worries hitting their foul shots. The quarter ends 19-14 to Guildford Heat, an early sign that we were in for a very gritty and hard nosed game, with both teams going all out on the boards and alot of contact which is being over looked not to anyone's surprise. 2nd Quarter From controlled and hard fought, to fast paced up and down ball in the second as Milton Keynes start off the better hitting their first three shots to nil, until Dux ends the mini drought from the charity stripe. Interest picks up when Dru Spinks drives strong to the hoop when James Jones is called for the un-sportsman like foul by ref Dale Aitcheson, the result is Dru making one of two from the line as Lions continue to build their tally from the line as they narrow the gap to one point. A quick Carlton Aaron bucket inside restored Heat's lead to three, 26-23 and that advantage was cut back to one point again through more free throws, this time through Peter Heizer. Heizer again sunk free throws to tie the game at 28, which was cancelled out on the next possession by a Dean Williams triple. That started a 9-2 run for the Heat where Aaron was coming into his own with inside buckets and MK could only add another field goal to add to the previous two to end the half with Guildford firmly in control leading by nine, 41-32. 14 of MK Lions 32 points have been from the free throw line. 3rd Quarter Again, like the opening tip, the game starts scrappy again though with Milton Keynes starting off the brighter with a quick burst 9-4 run capped with a Terrell Brown three ball to cut the lead from nine to four, 41-45 but Dux ends the mini run with a big three of his own to make it 48-41. Terrell, again lights up the three line with his second straight triple to cut the lead even closer, 52-54 and again Dux cancels it out with two free throws for a four point cushion, 56-52. The luck of the drop is happening for the away team as veteran Tony Windless fades away for two and a foul which he makes to tie the game before Dux for a third time cancels that for another three ball to make it 61-58. The game again, turns scrappy as both teams fight for the ball which results in numerous possession arrow balls and both teams fighting for the rebound as again heavy contact is made in the paint. The quarter ends with Guildford still up by 6, 66-60 but a good fight is being put up by the Lions who go into the final quarter in high spirits. 4th Quarter Just like the end of the third, the final period starts scrappy and very sloppy as both teams miss easy inside and open outside field goal attempts before nearly two minutes into the decider, Dux hits two straight two pointers to give Guildford it's biggest lead of the game at ten, 70-60 with 7:36 of the game to go. Lions respond again but a Dean Williams three furthers the lead to eleven, 73-62, Heat further this lead to 15 before Windless gets a bucket and the foul to cut the lead to twelve. Mike Martin again extends Heat's lead, and the captain shone in the fourth when his team need him to with back to back threes and with Lions starting to tire, finger rolls for an easy two to give Heat a massive 87-68 lead and when coach Paul James of Guildford calls a time out with 1:45 of the game to go, the Lions players knew that defeat was staring them in the face. Liam Cort comes on for MK and hits a two and a hard three, in-between a Gilbert score. The game ends it's sting and Guildford take it 95-79. Mike Martin leading all scorers with 24 with Mike New leading the Lions with 21. It was the Rocks who started the brighter of the two sides as they opened the game on a 8-0 tear led by Rob Yanders, but the run was cut short by a Fab Flournoy triple. Eagles then came out the blocks and went on a 15-4 run, with 7 points coming from Lynard Stewart and Eagles got the better of the first exchange, leading 20-19 after the first quarter. Things got better for the Eagles as they started the second quarter with a 13-2 run with the highlight being a Charles Smith triple and a later open two hand slam by Darius Defoe as Eagles built up a 11 point lead, 35-26. Rocks hung in there though, with Maurice Hampton hitting 4 second quarter points, but it was the Eagles who had the upper hand in a 20-13 second quarter to give them a 40-32 lead at half time. Scottish Rocks though, not a team to lay down and take in a loss, came storming back in the third with Moritz Wohlers trimming the lead to a single point, with a lovely lay up off a feed by Yanders. Eagles scrambled a put back by Charles Smith, but a three pointer from Gareth Murray gave Scottish Rocks a deserved third quarter lead, 50-47, but two pointers from Defoe and Smith quickly stopped a Rocks push. Fab, Bridge and Stewart all converted un-answered two pointers as Eagles just edged out into the lead as the third quarter came to a close, 59-56. A very nervy final quarter of play saw alot of hacking inside, but a key 6-0 run by Newcastle mid way through the fourth, helped the result become clearer. The run was ended when Babalola blocked Davis inside and started a fast break bucket which was finished by Defoe to give Eagles a 67-60 advantage, one that Rocks couldn't come back from, despite trimming it to two points, via a Julius Joseph three pointer. Fab, iced the game from the line and gave Eagles an overall deserved win. Game Thoughts In the end, the right result in a topsy turvy game where runs were built and leads were exchanged. Nice end to end basketball but execution was poor on both sides. Charles Smith had an outstanding game and was able to score his points with Rocks players hands firmly in his face. With Midgley now playing in the North-West and Jeremy Hyatt injured, Eagles played a six man rotation and apart from a few blips, didn't look to out of sorts and played their guts out to get the win. Rocks, like Eagles, played their hearts out and eventhough it's never good to lose when your so far away from home, can hold their heads high as they gave the crowd a greta performance Maurice Hampton and Moritz Wohlers had great games as they had to under intense Eagles pressure. Their con was not converting in the clutch, and a turnover by Julius Joseph with 1:24 left didn't help matters either. They only scored one field goal in the last 2:50 of the game, that was the difference to an otherwise close game. |

Heat also have brought in Ajou Deng in place of Steve Allen, who was released after one game and EJ Harrison who has replaced Brian Dux for obvious reasons. EJ was probably one of the finest players the EBL ever graced and in most seasons, has ended up winning a winners medal. Ajou, comes in after a year of injury problems but after extensive training with the Chicago Bulls, is fit again. KK Bosna have released guard Kyle Hill and replaced him with Jeremy Veal. Bosna last week were involved in a five overtime thriller with Alba Berlin, and during the warm up still showed signs of tiredness. Bosna like Turk Telekom, have brought a large legion of fans. A nice touch on behalf of KK Bosna before the start of the match when they presented captain Mike Martin with a Bosna home jersey with Brian Dux on the back of it. A nice of respect for the only team in ULEB to play against Brian Dux. 1st Quarter Guildford start with EJ Harrison, Daniel Gilbert, Tony Dorsey, Mike Martin and John Nottley. Bosna respond with Jeremy Veal, Bryan Bailey, Quemont Greer, Edin Bavcic and Dzenan Rahimic. A scrappy start to the game with the deadlock broken with Quemont Greer scoring off a rebound he collected from a Edin Bavcic missed three. Daniel Gilbert responded quickly with a triple to start his scoring. Jeremy Veal's first action in the game came from the line as he drove hard inside to earn two fouls shots which he sunk give Bosna a 4-3 lead, and that started a 7-0 run, which was ended by a Mike Martin triple as Guildford started to find their feet from downtown. Dzenan Rahmic kept battling inside and got his reward with his first points of the game and drew a foul, which he couldn't convert but after a Tony Dorsey three point play, got the ball in the post and spun the d for a lovely basket, high off the backboard. EJ Harrison registered his Guildford account with an open three from a pass back from John Nottley. Bryan Bailey stripped EJ clean off the ball at half court and easily converted an open lay up. After a poor shot from Guildford, Edin Bavcic collected the long ball by Bailey and jammed home to give the Bosnians a 17-12 lead but was quickly answered with a Tony Dorsey jumper from the elbow. A nip and tuck first period was ended with a mini 5-0 run. Tony Dorsey and Daniel Gilbert contributing in that run to give Heat hope for the second quarter, but with Bosna up one, 24-23. 2nd Quarter Edin Bavcic opened the second quarter straight away with an open triple, as Guildford were caught ball watching around the paint but found their feet quickly as Dorsey connected from the baseline before Lance Williams opened his account with a sweet baby hook. That triggered Heat to come back to life, and they posted a lead changing 7-0 run which started with Ajou Deng draining a three and Gilbert running at the heart of KK Bosna's front line to score the other four points. The lead was extended and the crowd brought to it's feet when from a Guildford rebound, the ball was lobbed to an open Mike Martin inside and he flushed home to give Guildford a 36-31 lead. Harrison and Martin again opened Guildford's lead more, when Lance Williams ended the run with an easy lay up. It was Williams again who led Bosna's own 7-0 run as he went inside for two and shot just off free throw range to close the gap and it was Jeremy Veal who ended the run with a big triple to quickly bring the gap from eleven down to four. Tony Dorsey responded in the final seconds to give Heat a 46-40 lead at the half. Half Time Analysis A quick paced two quarters where Guildford have a deserved lead but not counting out the continous threat of Lance Williams and KK Bosna who are still very much in the contest, despite very shaky moments of poor shot selection and iffy passing. Guildford have run the floor well and have scored easily inside and have again drawn some good fouls, like they did in the Turk Telekom game. Some being some what out of his position, EJ Harrison has steaded the Guildford ship well and has scored six points. 3rd Quarter Tony Dorsey opened the third quarter with a jumper from the elbow to start an important period for Guildford, to see if they don't fall on the lead they built up. They continued their steady start with Dorsey finishing a turn around jumper off a missed shot by Deng. Bosna opened their account after a pair of free throws by Deng with a sweet three pointer by Veal and Lance Williams broke loose inside again, to jump Bosna to a 8-0 run, including Veal's triple, Lance added a three point play and a clear goal tend by Deng to narrow the gap to four, 48-52. Bosna were then caught in back to back unsportsmanlike calls which both Mike Martin and Daniel Gilbert converted and Guildford capped off a quick and easy 6-0 run with another Gilbert basket inside to give the hosts a ten point lead, 58-48. Goran Ikonic ended the Guildford march with a nice move in traffic to score under the basket. EJ Harrison off a Guildford inbound fed Daniel Gilbert to score un guarded, but from then on the quarter turned into a trading affair with Dorsey ending the quarter with two points between them. The third quarter was fairly even, with Guildford leading only by two, 66-64. 4th Quarter The quarter where you hoped disaster wouldn't strike unfortunately did, as two free throws by Lance Williams tied the the game quickly and 5 quick fire points from Ikonic gave KK Bosna a 71-66 lead. Ajou Deng though hit back with a early three as he close the gap to three but Bosna were not to be denied as Lance Williams and Quemont Greer both got and one's to give Bosna a eight point lead, 77-69 with 3:15 played in the final period as Guildford already looked tired, Deng responded with another three but Bosna stepped up a gear and went on a vital 8-0 run where Veal and Suad Sehovic got big threes and off Greer finished off the run with a open two handed slam off a steal inside on Ajou Deng. Gilbert showed signs of life as he blocked Williams inside and went up court to hit a three from the baseline but with both teams in the penalty, Bosna seemed happy to get the rest of their points from the free throw line as Guildford continued to tire. Bryan Bailey made 4 out of 4 from the line and hit another Bosna three as Gilbert provided Guildford's fightback but it wasn't enough and This for Guildford, was the one that got away. After Game Interviews Bryan Bailey (KK Bosna) - We were not surprised with how Guildford came at us, they have a point to prove in the group and they wanted to prove it on home soil. We started the game very flat and were lazy at times but in the strech, we made crucial stops when it mattered and got the W. Guildford were tough and will improve as the final leg of games come. Jure Zdovc (Coach KK Bosna) - Guildford had new players in that will make the grade in this group. It didn't put us off but we were in a game, we knew that but in the key moments, we took our chances and came away with a vital away win. Heat can count themselves unlucky. Paul James (Coach Guildford Heat) - I was really proud of the guys tonight, despite the loss. We were stuck offensively and lacked fire power at the end, probably due to the wrong line up being out but I was very happy with how we handled our business tonight just upset that we came up short again. Tony Dorsey (Guildford Heat) - This loss hurt the players tonight but this loss will make us grow and improve us. The new players came in, unfortunately for them in big game circumstances but they did their job, they are still finding their feet but they will come good I reckon. We can learn from this and it'll give us the confidence booster going into Saturday's BBL Cup semi. Game Analysis This was the one that got away for Guildford tonight, who should hold their heads up high after this loss. Daniel Gilbert played his heart out and got a well earned double double of 28 points and 10 boards. Guildford came into the fourth tired and at times nervous as KK Bosna took advantage of the lack of pressure around the three point area and they hit their shots when it mattered. Despite the final period belonging to Bosna, Guildford deserved something but lessons are still being learned and now their focus switches to Saturday's BBL Cup Semi Final against the Milton Keynes Lions |

The home side opened the scoring with the first shot of the game, as Mike Martin converted from outside, which was answered by a Tayo Ogendengbe two from above the elbow. Guildford then pressed on, earning themselves a 12-3 run, including a Daniel Gilbert triple. Tony Dorsey ended the run scoring hard in traffic and getting the foul, which the veteran converted, giving the hosts a comfortable 15-5 lead. Ogendengbe, narrowed the gap to 6 later on in the first committing Chi Lewis-Parry for a foul and a basket. Steve Bucknell then rolled back the years with a three pointer from the corner to leave Capital trailing by only two (24-26). Chi Lewis-Parry, playing against his former club converted one of two free throws to slightly strengthen Guildford's lead to three points at the end of a high scoring first quarter, 27-24. The second quarter was the period where Guildford, in the end won the game. Winning the quarter itself, 27-9 as London's lack of players also began to take it's toll due to fatigue. Gilbert and Harrison were responsible in the runs Heat had, and fan favourite Jon May scored on a fast break to give Guildford a 49-33 lead with just under 5:00 left in the half. The lead was extended to 54-33 at the half time buzzer with the game having a much different outlook then the last encounter. The third was un-eventful to say the least as both teams played a scrappy quarter. A quarter that saw alot of turnovers and general sloppyness from both sides had one or two bright patches with Ibrahim Gariba earning himself a double double with a tough move inside and a Tony Dorsey snap pass, which caught the Capital players off guard and saw Ajou Deng finish easily un-touched. The gap had been narrowed to 17 but Lewis-Parry, who ended up one point off his own double double gave the hosts even more breathing space to end the third up 75-54. Guildford forced a third Capital 24 second violation of the game as the London players seemed to concede defeat as Guildford reached the 100 mark on Dean Williams free throws and a John Nottley two handed stuff as Guildford started 2008 with a convincing win. |

They won their last encounter with Guildford in Lithuania so they must fancy their chances. Guildford, as last week, are playing for pride and for most Guildford fans, will be their final home game in the ULEB Cup for this season. Their biggest crowd at the Furnace, (not the rink) in the ULEB Cup of 1000 are here to watch this game, with more than half the crowd supporting Siauliai awesome atmosphere. 1st Quarter Guildford come onto their home court for the last time in the ULEB Cup with EJ Harrison, Daniel Gilbert, Mike Martin, Tony Dorsey and Ajou Deng. BC Siauliai start with Gediminas Maceina, Jose Olivero, Antonio Grant, Donatas Zavackas and Arturas Masiulis The game was fast paced to begin and both teams started playing a very up tempo basketball. Ajou Deng got the scoring off the board with the first shot of the game, a three pointer, which was answered by Siauliai guard, Gediminas Macina, with a nice floater driving through the heart of the Heat D. Arturas Masiulis put the visitors in front briefly with an open dunk, when EJ Harrison opened his account with a jumper near the free throw line. Siauliai hit it's first triple of the game and was replied by Tony Dorsey, with a three of his own. Donatas Zavackas hit his first bucket of the game with the third successive triple in a row or both teams to put Siauliai 10-8 up and after a Mike Martin bucket inside, Antonio Grant flushed hard from the baseline. From then, that triggered a 17-2 run, with the final two points scored in the second by the hosts as Daniel Gilbert and EJ Harrison went on a mini scoring spree, contributing to 15 of those 17 points between them as Guildford ended the first quarter, 25-15 ahead. 2nd Quarter A fast paced first period changed in the second set of exchanges, it took over two and a half minutes for any team to score, EJ broke the duck with a floating jumper inside. Grant answered back for the visitors, as Guildford then fell victim to a 0-9 run. Highlighted by a solid coast to coast by Marius Prekevicius, to reduce the lead to just 3 points, (27-24). Mike Martin then hit 4 straight points, including an open two hand slam to extend the hosts lead to 7. Mantas Ruikis hit back with a triple and Masiulis narrowed the gap to two points, with a baby hook. Both teams went back to playing scrappy basketball as it was trading baskets and stop, start refereeing. The game was tied at 33, when Dorsey went strong, scored and got the foul. He converted the resulting free throw, to give Heat a 36-33 lead going into the second half of play. 3rd Quarter Siauliai hit back in the third quarter, once Dan Wardrope opened registered his first points of the game, The visitors went on a quickfire 9-2 run, where Prekevicius came into his own with 4 points in that run and he capped it off with a emphatic two hand slam to give Siauliai the lead. Gilbert then fired in 5 straight, as Heat moved back into the lead mid way the third. Things took a turn for the worse as the wheels of the Guildford wagon, started coming apart as Siauliai went on a game changing, 12-2 run. Guildfords failure to repeat the swarming defence inside told, as the visitors drove to the hoop, collected offensive rebounds and took advantage of Guildfords almost tiring defence. A former product of Siauliai, Nerijus Karlikanovas, showed his three point stroke is still working well with an open triple, to close the gap 4 points, (52-56). The impressive Prekevicius ended the third quarter with a nice driving lay up as Siauliai were in the lead, 60-54 and they had turned a 3 point deficit right around. 4th Quarter Guildford started the fourth, almost playing non structured basketball with Harrison being double teamed, as soon as he was over half way and unable to have time to call the play. Grant, gave Siauliai its first double digit lead with 7:45 left. Two more Siauliai scores, and Mike Martin fouls out with 6:03 left. Ruikis drained a three pointer, to give Guildford a 17 point deficit and pretty much a mountain to climb. Gilbert and Harrison steadied the ship along, but by then, the visitors were starting to score with ease, as Guildford tired. James Jones hit a three with over a minute left to narrow the gap to 6, but time was not on their side and in the end, Siauliai ended the game with the final 4 points and a big victory, as Alba lost against Turk Telekom, so Siauliais chances of progressing are probable. |
