25 aug faith in tj and the jets 4 months without basketball really drags by! Sitting around the house doing nothing isn’t my ideal way to spend a Sunday evening. I would prefer to be at the Northgate Arena watching my favourite basketball team, the Cheshire Jets. I have been watching the Jets for 4 years now and I go to every home game. The Jets are now starting to rebuild after a long and gruelling season. I remember one game in particular when we only had 5 players fit. That was the most effort I’ve ever seen a team put in. Towards the end of the season James Hamilton injured his shoulder, but he continued to play even with it heavily strapped! But that was last year and promise of a big season fills my thoughts, especially with the new ownership of Big Storage and the leadership of influential former Newcastle Eagles legend, TJ Walker. TJ and a progressive signing policy, with no panic deadline activity who plays in the Point Guard position, has been one of the best point guards in the league for many years winning various trophies; most notably during the 2005-06 season with a clean sweep or as we Jets’ fans more commonly know it as, “The Jet Wash!” TJ has been busy signing players over the summer and has made 3 confirmed signings so far with more promised in the very near future. The first signing was that of 6’3” shooting guard Jayson Obazuaye who graduated from the University of Colorado in 2006 and went on to play in the Polish top tier with Stal Ostrow Wielkopolski. The second signing was that of 6’7” David Radlovic. David, who is of Bosnian/Canadian origin, has just come out of the University of Idaho. David is someone who likes to shoot the jump shot, but he can also drive into the lane and finish strong at the hoop. The third signing was that of 6’4” Marc Pratt. Marc was born in London in 1982. Marc played for Towson State University last year averaging 1 minute and 1 point per game over 5 games. He is a player who can get up and down the floor very quickly. The long awaited first game of the new season is on the 23rd of September against the Sheffield Sharks, who are coached by Peter Scantlebury. This will be Peter’s 5th year in charge of the Sharks as he looks for his first Championship as a coach. Let’s hope the Jets get off to a good start! |

29 sep - northgate rocking again Two losses after two games is not what we wanted, but hopefully we can turn that around before the next home game in 3 weeks against a very strong Guildford Heat side who won their first game of the season against an equally strong Newcastle Eagles team. Before the game people were warned to arrive early as a sell-out crowd was expected at the game. They weren’t wrong, it looked like the biggest crowd in the last 2 years (oh they were the days; we are all looking forward to their return)! The atmosphere was immense, but deafening! It was so deafening that my dad is going to be bringing ear-defenders to the next game (look carefully and you will spot us behind the away bench)! It may have been noisy, but it was great to see a packed Northgate Arena again. The first home game of the 2007/08 season finally arrived, but it didn’t end the way we wanted it. I new it would be hard even though we are always hopeful. The Jets lost to perennial rivals Sheffield Sharks 68-74 in a low scoring, but very entertaining game. Blocks were being made left, right and centre and players grabbing impossible rebounds with gravity defying rebounds. And that was only the first two minutes! The first half looked very promising with the Jets moving the ball nicely, but with so many driving attempts on basket and some of the best blocking I have ever seen, it just wouldn’t go in. Even though the Sharks were slightly bigger then we were man for man the offensive rebounding from the Jets was amazing as they won nearly every rebound after a Jets miss even with the huge presence of Randy George! Last year Locker Okorie sat on the bench getting about 5 minutes per game, but on Sunday he started and played most of the game. Does this show a lack of money at the Sharks and the league? Fair play to Okorie he didn’t look out of place and we wish him well this season, on this evidence it looks likely that he can step up after a couple of years gathering bench splinters. Lets not forget the nice guy of the league Peter Scantlebury, Sharks have undertaken a complete rebuild after having had continuity for some seasons. He certainly showed class in knitting together his rotating seven. What a fantastic move it was by TJ to re-sign James Hamilton, he just keeps getting better with age!, but one more than one or two occasions he looked at Paul Smith with a “what am I doing here again look”, fair play to him, on each occasion they both laughed it off. James has put in two fantastic performances at home against the Riders and Sharks so hopefully he can continue his great form into the next game where the Jets play a very strong looking Guildford Heat side. Guildford have been able to sign most of last years players except for influential player Chad McKnight, but even without Chad the Heat have still managed to make a strong start to the season by winning their first game of the season against the Eagles. I am delighted to here that there is a planned community project for next year; it would be great to see some mini leagues for each school year. I am sure that there must be enough talent out there to produce 6 teams, I would suggest that our professionals adopt a team who are divided into equal ability who could perhaps play before the main event (more parent bums on seats for the main event), sign me up as one of the short guys (or can I lie about my age and play with the young ones?) It’s always great to see the previous players return, could we perhaps invite them to take a bow on court rather than stand on the side line. These great pass players of the Jets should be made to feel very welcome and thanked for the great entertainment they once provided. Calvin Davies “Take a Bow”. |
