from badaball courtesy of El Crack Round 1 6/7 oct Over 10,000 fans were at the Vistalegre for the biggest game in the opening round of the new ACB season and the majority of the crowd left happy after Real picked up a 68-61 win over Pamesa Valencia. Alex Mumbru was the game MVP with a terrific performance of 20 points and 5 rebounds as Real shrug off a slow start to grow strong in the second half. Valencia opened up with a 21-16 first quarter advantage and were still in the lead at half time. However a strong third quarter by the Whites gave them the momentum as they outscored their opponents 23-13 in the period to help them to victory. Ruben Garces top scored for Valencia with 16 points. Elsewhere in the capital, Fuenlabrada were facing DKV Joventut and it looks like many critics expecting a tougher season for the home team could be right. There was a huge gap In class between the teams as Badalona cruised to a massive 73-97 win. The home team might have comprehensively won the battle of the boards and had Tom Wideman with his usual double-double having collected 12 points and 10 rebounds but it wasn’t enough. They had no answer to Rudy Fernandez who helped the Catalans into a 17-26 lead after the opening period, the first of four quarters that Badalona won. Fernandez finished with 20 points and as the game’s highest scorer. Grupo Begar Leon knew it would be difficult making the step up to the ACB and their fears were confirmed when they found themselves quickly trailing by double figures against visiting CB Granada. However Coach Aranzana will be pleased at his team’s response in the second half as Leon fought to try and get themselves back in the game before finally going down by 64-74. Carles Marco hit three of three from outside on his way to top scoring for the home team with 16 points. Granada meanwhile turned to Corsley Edwards and Italian Nicolas Gianella who both chalked up 18 points each. Barcelona produced a magnificent final quarter fight back in Valladolid to secure an exciting 86-78 victory. The home side looked to be on the brink of a famous win as they led by double figures early in the fourth but a three-pointer by Basile set the visitors off on a remarkable run. They outscored Javier Imbroda’s team by 29-11 to rack up a first win under pressure. Jaka Lakovic was the star for Barca with a mesmerising shooting performance that included no fewer than five three-pointers in a haul of 29 points. Barca also had Jordi Trias to thank for a solid game inside as he completed a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds to go with a creditable five assists. Coach Imbroda meanwhile will be encouraged by his team’s performance in the first three quarters but will be worried how suddenly his team dried up offensively while Bud Eley fouling out was a real blow. The win was tough on French guard Joseph Gomis who carried the fight right until the end with a game high 32 points. Elsewhere the other big game of the opening weekend was undoubtedly in the Fontajau in Girona where the home team overcome visiting SuperCup champions Tau Ceramica in a thrilling game that finished 78-76 to Akasvayu. In a game that never saw any team make any real decisive break from the other, the hosts made the most of the final period to sneak a crucial win. San Emeterio starred for Girona with 21 points while Pablo Prigioni had 6 assists for Tau who had new signing Wil McDonald making a quiet ACB debut. Ricoh Manresa are the first promoted team to get a win at the first attempt after they gained a vital success over ViveMenorca. The 87-79 win was hard fought and inspired by their reliable power forward Josh Asselin who had 19 points and 9 rebounds while new import Matt Walsh produced a good impression with a solid shooting performance for 21 points. For Ricard Casas and Menorca, they will be encouraged that they had a decent team performance with five players in double figures but will have to make sure they don’t have to rely too much on Chris Moss again this season. Unicaja travelled to the capital but were left disappointed after going down 69-64 to Estudiantes. Having started slowly it had looked as if the home team would run away with a win but the Malaga club rallied in the second half and made a comeback. The visitors had to rely on their Carlos duo in Cabezas and Jiminez to keep them in the game as they shared 31 points between them. For Estu this was a good win after their terrible start last season and Coach De Pablos will be delighted to grind out a narrow win with his team not firing on all cylinders. The defence of Florent Pietrus against his former club absolutely vital including three blocked shots at vital times. Dan Clark played a handful of minutes and converted a three-point attempt Gran Canaria had also looked like running away with victory against Cajasol Seville but ended up winning by a closer margin of 68-61. Canadian new boy Carl English scored 18 points and Sitapha Sivane recorded 14 points in the win. New Seville coach Ruben Magnano will not be too disappointed having brought many new players into the club. His players combined well for 33 assists but just couldn’t find support in the scoring stakes for Michalis Kakiouzis who had 19 points. Englishman Andy Betts had 8 points and nine rebounds in twenty minutes on his Seville debut. Joel Freeland did not play any minutes. Finally Polaris World Murcia edged out Bilbao in a 68-67 success in a low scoring yet exciting encounter. Incredibly just one home player managed double figures in Anton Gavel but nevertheless Murcia still overcome the SuperCup finalists Bilbao who will be disappointed not to have taken the win back to the Basque Country. |

ROUND 2 Barcelona showed once again why they will be pushing for titles on all fronts this season with another strong performance on Saturday evening, this time at home to Estudiantes. Their 81-64 win never looked to be in doubt after starting where they left off last time out against Valladolid. The home side opened up a double figure lead by the end of the first quarter at 27-17. The star display at Palau Blaugrana came from Italian Gianluca Basile who is in red hot form and contributed with 21 points and 5 assists. Only Florent Pietrus shined for Estu and his athleticism helped him claim 9 boards to go with his 11 points. Dan Clark played just over 3 minutes but failed to trouble the statsman. Another team with two wins out of two are Akasvayu Girona. They left ViveMenorca looking set for another season of struggle after trouncing the home side 99-81in front of a disappointed crowd of over 5,000. Menorca were again relying heavily on their big star Chris Moss who continues to tear up the ACB with big numbers after a good year last time round. He claimed a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds and just missed out on a flawless performance after missing a single free-throw. Girona meanwhile are looking dangerous after their big win over Tau last week they were full of confidence with a quality outside and inside display while with Marc Gasol in irresistable form, they were always going to win this one. Gasol was the games MVP, just outshining the impressive Moss with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Unicaja picked up their first win of the season in Malaga but left visiting Leon rock bottom with Menorca and looking for a first success. The hosts were in control after a slow start which had Leon ahead 16-15 but Malaga stepped up a gear and showed the difference in class. While only three players scraped into double figures for Leon, Malaga had five and others like Berni Rodriguez highlighted Unicaja’s strong team performance with seven assists. After last week’s narrow defeat in Murcia, Bilbao were happy to be back at home and showed their Super Cup form with an 80-74 home win against Gran Canaria. A strong third quarter for Bilbao helped them edge ahead although Granca will be not too disappointed with their own performance. Senegal forward Sitapha Sivane again impressive for the visitors and the games outstanding player with 18 points. Joel Freeland racked up his usual DNP. The big clash of Round 2 saw Tau Ceramica host Real Madrid and they showed the men from the capital that they will be every bit as strong as last season after blowing away Real by a stunning 93-70. Tiago Splitter was dominant throughout the game with the Brazilian big man claiming 24 points and two blocks while Pablo Prigioni pulled the strings with 8 assists as the hosts took the game to Madrid both inside and out. Joan Plaza will be galled at how easily his misfiring team were outplayed so badly and with several biog names failing to show up, it was left to Louis Bullock to limit the damage with 24 points. Both teams and favourites for titles now have one win each after two games. There is just no stopping a rampant DKV Joventut who are certainly making a statement to the test of the league with some free-flowing basketball so far. While they might have had two relatively easy games to start, they have certainly made the most of this to fine tune their offence. In their first home game in Badalona, they destroyed Valladolid 109-76 to leave Javier Imbroda’s team still searching for a first win after a difficult start to the new campaign. Joventut coach Reneses will be thrilled with the real team effort by his players with fiuve players reaching double-figures and Jan Jagla picking up a double-double with a creditable 13 rebounds to go with his 12 points. Rudy Fernandez continues to be a real power and showed he can dish it up as well as score having added 6 assists to his 17 points and with top scorer Demond Mallet shooting his way to 20 points, things are looking good for the Catalans. Another team looking good are CB Granada. With some people tipping the side for a season of struggle after losing their talisman Curtis Borchardt, they have defied such predictions and followed up last week’s road win with an 82-77 overtime win in the Andalucian derby against Polaris World Murcia. A crowd of 6672 were treated to a real exciting contest thanks to a sensational second half fight back by the home team. They overturned a double figure deficit in the final period to force overtime and then continued their good work by holding Murcia to just 4 points in the extra period. Juan Pedro Gutiérrez was the star for the home team with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds although you have to feel sorry for Murcia pair Jimmie Hunter and Juan Triguero. The former had 27 points while the latter picked up a double-double of his own with 14 points and 13 boards. Certainly Murcia will be thankful that they managed to squeeze out that close win last week against Bilbao so they at least have one close win to their name after losing this heartbreaker. The same can’t be said for Cajasol Seville who hosted Fuenlabrada with both sides looking for a win after opening round defeats. However things have fallen flat for Seville and they went down 81-91 in front of just 3600 fans to put early pressure on Coach Magnano. A dreadful start to each half gave Seville two mountains to climb and while 28 point Texan Tyrone Ellis tried his best, he couldn’t prevent Fuenlabrada from taking advantage. The Madrid club bounced back from their opening round trouncing at home to Joventut with a solid performance led by shooters Radivojevic and Tomas who combined for 42 points. Andy Betts had a medicore 8 points and 5 rebounds. Finally in Valencia, the home team got off the mark against Ricoh Manresa but it took a second half turnaround to complete the win after the visitors shocked the home team with a 7 point lead at the break. Josh Asselin was a real thorn in the side of Valencia scoring 23 points but he received little support and the depth of Valencia proved the difference in the last two quarters. Four players scored 15 points or more for the home team with Alberto Miralles completing a double-double with 11 rebounds. ROUND 3 (MIDWEEK GAMES) CURRENTLY ON EL CRACK SECTION OF BADABALL |

Looks like Joel is heading for more frustration I wonder if he tried to find another club? Seville lost again to Manresa last night and are definitely struggling, hope Betts can do well enough to survive any changes they might make Joventut beat Barca 94-73 with Jagla getting 24 points and Fernandez 22. a 32-17 second quarter blitz went a long way towards securing the win |

In Wednesday’s game we will start at the bottom of the classifications where Valladolid went into their home clash with ViveMenorca knowing that whoever lost this game would have the unwanted 0-3 record. In a close game it looked as though the visiting team had taken the initiative but whatever Javier Imbroda said to Valladolid at the half time break worked and they eased their way to a fine 95-78 win in the second half. Valladolid had the in-form Frenchman Joseph Gomis to thank with his 21 points as well as big man Vasco Evtimov who collected 10 points and 10 rebounds. Some clinical outside shooting that included a trio of three-pointers from Rodrigo San Miguel also helped put Menorca away who struggled as Chris Moss had one of his rare quieter games. Akasvayu Girona preserved their unbeaten start to the season although only just by squeezing out a one point win against an improved Valencia side. Although the visitors now have a 1-2 record after this latest 83-82 defeat, they have faced both Girona and Real away in their first three games. Girona meanwhile are relying more and more on Marc Gasol who many said had a less effective season last time but is really on his game at the moment. His 19 points and 5 rebounds provided the foundation for the narrow win although Valencia came mightily close to a win with home grown Valencia born 19 year old Academy player Victor Claver having the game of his life. His 20 points came by way of a perfect shooting performance from the field with only a few missed free-throws and the final result spoiling his chance of a perfect night. Certainly fans, players and many clubs will now be tracking the progress of the young player. In the other game played, Unicaja collected their second home win of the season wirth a comfortable 80-56 win over Polaris World Murcia. Cheered on to victory by the usual near-10 000 fans at the Martin Carpena, Malaga put the visitors to the sword early by establishing a 14 point first quarter lead. Some free-flowing team basketball left Murcia helpless and again with a healthy 19 assists, Unicaja showed they can be an effective team this year and improve on last seasons final placings which saw them only just secure a play-off spot. A terrific perimeter shooting performance by forward Marcus Haislip the highlight of the evening as he top scored with 19 points. On Thursday night it was further woe for struggling Cajasol Seville who crashed to their third defeat of the season at surprise package Ricoh Manresa who after having been promoted have already picked up two wins from their first three games. It had looked as if Cajasol might be heading for that elusive first victory of the new campaign when they stormed into an early double figure lead but the home side took control either side of half time much to the delight of the near 5,000 crowd in the Pavello Nou Congost. Manresa outscored Seville 52-30 across the second and third quarters to destroy their hopes. Although Cajasol came back in the final quarter they didn’t have the scorers to overhaul the deficit and eventually lost by 87-81. This latest defeat puts pressure further pressure on Coach Magnano although he must surely be given some time to find the chemistry after a radical overhaul of the squad during the summer. However with Girona up next, things aren’t likely to get much easier in a league where every game is tough. At least Cajasol can rely on Aaron Miles with the Oregon born guard claiming 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Manresa meanwhile will be overjoyed at their early season form and it was the outside shooting of Juan Espil that dragged them back into the game in the early stages. He made three big shots from the perimeter before Rafa Martinez and Javi Rodriguez came up with a real double act to secure victory by claiming 27 points and 12 assists between them. Elsewhere Groupo Begar Leon can only dream of the start made by their LEB rivals from last year. Leon are propping up the table after a third loss resigned them to bottom spot. They slumped to an 83-67 loss in Gran Canaria after a dismal third quarter cost them dear. Having enjoyed a respectable first half and with the contest finely poised as a one-shot game at the break, Granca stepped up their game and produced a 24-10 quarter to end Leon’s hopes. The home team still have Sitapha Sivane producing the goods and he top scored with 16 while Leon struggled offensively and only had two players scraping into double figures. At the top of the classifications, DKV Joventut went into the big Barcelona derby in confident mood and it proved to be well founded with the resurgent Badalona club blowing away their rivals 94-73. In a stunning second quarter that had Barca coach Dusko Ivanovic irate, the home team outscored their opponents 32-17 showing they are after some big trophies this season. Certainly Coach Reneses seems to have recruited well and Jan Hendrik Jagla is enjoying his early Joventut career. He claimed 24 points and 6 rebounds but it was two veterans of the Badalona team in Lubos Barton and Rudy Fernandez that really excelled. Barton was all over the court and had an excellent all-round game with 9 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists while there is no keeping Rudy down as he rattled up 22 points including 5 from the arc. Barca will have to pick themselves up post-Navarro and try to gather some momentum ahead of their European campaign. Only Frenchman Michel Morandais had any kind of big game with 18 points. The last game of Round 3 was another huge derby game in the capital. Estudiantes hosted Real Madrid and with a massive crowd of 13 500 hoping for an exciting game it did not quite live up to the billing after Real took control early. Even without Felipe Reyes they showed their class and with 18 point Luis Bullock in the mood they opened up with a 32-17 to almost end the hopes of Estu inside ten minutes. The home team could never make up the difference. They might have dominated the glass but the rebounding was only symptomatic of their inability to make baskets and the number of misses which always made it difficult. Estudiantes will be hoping they can recover and bounce back and not repeat last year’s woeful start while Real at least wiped out their miserable memories of last weekend’s nightmare in Vitoria. ROUND 4 NOW UP ON EL CRACK ON BADABALL |

round 4 Round 4 of ACB was as spectacular as ever and particularly in Vitoria where Ricoh Manresa pulled off a sensational one point win over the mighty Tau Ceramica. Their shock 83-82 success was mainly due to guard Matt Welsh who led the visitors with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Manresa led after the first quarter and while it looked like Tau would come back in the second half with the scores tied at the break, Manresa had a spectacular third quarter outscoring their illustrious opponents 24-15 before holding on for a memorable win. Tau meanwhile were left shocked ands the defeat was not good preparation for the Euroleague campaign. Igor Rakocevic top scored for Vitoria with 23 points. The other promoted team from LEB also collected an important win - their first of the season. They had to work hard and needed overtime against Bilbao to pull off a thrilling 77-76 victory. It had looked like it would be Bilbao that would be taking the points in this game for long periods in the second half after Leon had control in the first period. A noisy home crowd thought their team had blown their chance when Bilbao blew them away 25-11 in the third but they launched a brave final quarter fight back. Leon kept driving to the basket to get foul shots and gradually clawed their way back into the game and took the lead in the final minute. However two free-throws from Javi Salgado forced overtime for Bilbao. Just when it looked as if Leon had blown their chance the extra period was every bit as exciting as the fourth quarter and they won the game from the line to spark scenes of jubilation Another nail biting game was in Seville where it was heartbreak for the home team. They had looked for most of the game that they would also pick up their first win of the season and end Girona’s unbeaten start to the campaign in the process but it wasn’t to be and they agonisingly lost out 79-80. Girona produced a remarkable long range shooting performance to keep themselves in the game and nudge themselves ahead when it mattered in the final quarter after they had been trailing by four points. The loss was tough on Seville pair Aaron Miles and Michalis Kakiouzis who both scored 17 points each. Girona were lead by veteran Ariel McDonald. Locked at the bottom of the table without a win with Seville are ViveMenorca and Coach Ricard Casas must have been cursing his look when after three defeats the calendar threw up a home game with DKV Joventut. The Badalona club are flying and like Girona remain unbeaten after they crushed Menorca 68-93. It was the same old story for the hosts with too much on the shoulders of Chris Moss while the visitors had contribution from all over the floor. Young star Ricky Rubio with his best game of the season so far leading the way with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Barcelona had an awful start to their home clash with Gran Canaria and found themselves trailing by double figures after the opening ten minutes but then stepped up defensively to hold Granca to a paltry 10 point per quarter in the middle part of the game outscoring the visitors 48-20.. This allowed Barca to take control by the end of the third although to their credit, Granca stormed back and showed heart to narrow to within 5 points at the final buzzer going down 69-65. Jaka Lakovic scored 230 points and claimed 6 assists for Barca while his fellow guard Pepe Sanchez claimed a rare double double of points and rebounds rather than assists with 12 and 10. The best double-double performance of the game went to Granca’s Kornel David who had claimed 20 points and 10 rebounds. In the Madrid derby, Fuenlabrada made Real fight all the way to the end to secure a 74-69 win. Indeed the away team held a slender one point advantage at the break but the Whites came back strongly in the second half in what was a defensive game. With only two Fuenlabrada players getting into double figures including Marko Tomas at his former club, Real took advantage and Luis Bullock was, for the second successive game the match winner for Real with 21 points. CB Granada are still going strong and have a 3-1 record after their second home win of the season coming by way of a 74-68 success over Valladolid. A large home crowd of 6,500 came out to support their team and they won’t worry that it was a mediocre game of basketball and that the visitors dominated on the boards because their team came out as winners. They had to contend with Bud Eley who had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Valladolid but crucially they kept in-form Gomis and Evtimov quiet to secure the victory. Seville born Carlos Cherry top scored for Granada. Polaris World Murcia put a little pressure on Coach De Pablos at Estudiantes after inflicting a third loss of the season on the Madrid club. Murcia produced a strong performance after a below par first quarter and blew away Estu. Murcia were in control in more ways than one as they looked after the ball whereas DePablos will be giving his team a verbal rocket for their 19 turnovers. Diego Fajardo with 16 points and 12 boards for the home team. Meanwhile in Saturday’s only game, Valencia picked up a crucial 75-65 win over Unicaja with Shammond Williams and Ruben Douglas the tormentors of the Malaga club, combining for 23 points each. Unicaja Coach Sergio Scariolo watched his team make a strong start with Davor Kus impressive but were then offensively poor in the second quarter scoring just 8 points to hand the initiative back to Valencia. While the game hung in the balance until the final couple of minutes, Douglas and Williams got Valencia over the line. |

ROUND SIX One of Saturday’s two Round 6 games showed the gulf in class between two of the ACB giants in Tau Ceramica and Estudiantes. The home team destroyed the visitors from the capital by 90-69 with the deficit even larger for much of the contest until Estu rallied in the final period. Tau continued on from where they left off in Euroleague during the week and blew the visitors away in the first half with an 18 point advantage at the break. The power of Tau in all departments showing how far Estu have to go get back to challenging the top clubs in the years to come. Although at this moment they will be more worried that they are looking over their shoulder at the bottom of the classifications now they have a terrible 1 and 5 record, this latest defeat piling the pressure on Coach DePablos. Dan Clark played 10 m,inutes but didnt contribute much in his time For the home team, Tiago Splitter was dominant with 8 points and 9 rebounds while Igor Rakocevic top scored with 20 points. Meanwhile Sergio Sanchez and Txemi Urtasun both recorded 16 points for Estu. DKV Joventut bounced back from last week’s shocking performance against Bilbao to regain top position in the standings. They had to work hard at Leon to record a 90-80 point victory and especially as they were without their star Rudy Fernandez. However Lubos Barton , Ricky Rubio and Demond Mallett all stepped up to help secure the victory in front of almost 6,000 home fans. Badalona started strongly and largely controlled the game as Barton top scored with 23 points, Mallett chipped in with 18 and Rubio had an efficient game at the point guard spot continuing to mature all of the time. The home team will be at least happy with their second half performance, making the visitors work for their win, closing to just a few points in the final quarter. Madrid born Nacho Yanez claimed 30 points for Leon who remain in difficulty in the drop zone with a 1 and 5 record. ViveMenorca are celebrating a first win of the season after being the last ACB team to collect a victory . Their shock win lifted them from the bottom of the classifications and aptly came in Malaga. For Ricard Casas pulled off a shock win at Unicaja last year to help secure survival. This latest 83-66 success all the more impressive because Sergio Scariolo’s destroyed Cibona Zagred during the week in Euroleague and had looked to be finding form. Menorca dominated in the paint and controlled the boards throughout the game to shock almost 10,000 home fans who were stunned as Menorca not only took the lead but pulled away in the final period. Their win was made possible by Marko Marinovic who racked up 20 points and Unicaja’s lack of a real scorer in the game. Another team pulling off a surprise win to some extent were Polaris World Murcia who inflicted a second defeat of the season on Girona. The home team recorded a 76-67 win thanks mainly to a blistering start when they caught Girona cold to take the initiative. Led by hot-shot Anton Gavel, Murica were hot from outside with Slovakian making five three-pointers from just seven attempts on his way to 20 points. Marc Gasol was the games top scorer with 21 points and 14 rebounds with his terrific double-double meaning he didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. Pamesa Valencia continue to look impressive and after crushing Gran Canaria 75-51 and despite a tough schedule to start the season, Valencia have a 4-2 record and could easily have been even better with a little bit of luck. This was a great team performance with every Pamesa player contributing while for Granca it is back to the drawing board after this real horror show. Sitpaha Sivane salvaging some personal pride with 11 points and 11 rebounds but there was very little else from the Canary Islanders who will want to make sure they don’t have a poor record on the road like last year. Joel Freeland DNP Real Madrid are also looking the part as you would expect and they showed no signs of fatigue from the close Euroleague game with Lottomatica Roma during the midweek after cruising to a 85-72 win over in-form Granada. A strong start to each half did the trick while Alex Mumbru, Felipe Reyes and Charles Smith continued where they left off against Roma with more powerful performances. Curtis Borchardt was kept quiet by Real and it left Granada struggling offensively although Nicolas Gianelli did weigh in with 18 points. Barcelona continue to compete for top spot and have just one defeat to their name after collecting a comfortable 78-62 home win over Fuenlabrada. The visitors had no answer to Barca’s Bomb Squad with a three-point flurry from a host of players making it impossible for Fuenlabrada to keep up. Shooting over 76 percent from outside, the likes of Roger Grimau, Jaka Lakovic and the games top scorer Gianluca Basile with 17 points all enjoyed a great shooting day at Palau Blaugrana. After getting a first win of the new campaign at home to Leon last week, Cajasol were looking to follow it up with another in Bilbao, who themselves were on a high after their fine win in Badalona. The visitors from Seville started brightly and took the lead after the opening period but the home side led By the irrepressible Luke Recker began to take control. Cajasol look like a team who need more scoring power and it showed with just two players scraping into double-figures. Recker’s 22 points and devastating perimeter shooting helping Bilbao to an 81-66 victory. Andy Betts had a mediocre game. Finally in the last match of ACB round 6, the Sunday evening game saw Valladolid travel to Ricoh Manresa who have made a great start to the season and the visitors pulled off an impressive 78-92 victory. They started off brilliantly and had opened up an unassailable 17 point advantage by the half time break. Oscar Yebra top scored with 17 points including four from four three-pointers. |

The pressure is on both Unicaja and Estudiantes after both of the ACB’s biggest clubs again suffered defeats in round 7. Estudiantes are stranded at the bottom of the classifications with a 1 and 6 record after again suffering form a heavy defeat, this time going down 86-72 in Seville to leave Coach De Pablos sweating on his future. A disastrous third quarter proved ciritcal for Estu who were outscored 24-8 by Cajasol with Tyrone Ellis top scoring with 19 while Aaron Miles dished up 9 assists and Michalis Kakiouzis recrded a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. A much better performance from Seville coming in front of a disappointing crowd of 3800. Estudiantes meanwhile were let down by their usually dependable Florent Pietrus who scored no points and claimed just 2 rebounds in almost 25 minutes on court. Andy Betts scored 13 points but suprisingly he pulled down just 1 board. Dan Clark did not play. Down in Malaga, the Euroleague seems to be a distraction for Unicaja who slumped to a second successive home defeat to leave them floundering with a 2-5 record. The latest setback for under-fire home coach Sergio Scariolo was a 77-76 reverse against Bilbao. The defeat all the worse because Unicaja were ahead by 9 points and in control after the first quarter. However they then imploded either side of the half time break and going into the final period were down by double-figures. Despite rallying in the final quarter with Carlos Cabezas leading the way with 23 points to almost snatch a win, Bilbao hung on for the victory. It is the second huge win for Bilbao after their recent success in Badalona and they look to be a much improved team as they move up the classifications with a 5-2 record. Barcelona remain pushing for top spot with their latest win coming at home against Leon who fought all the way trying to take advantage of a poor shooting performance by the home team who are normally reliable from the perimeter. Barca eventually prevailed 67-56 with 8 points and 8 assists from Pepe Sanchez the highlight of a poor display by Dusko Ivanovic’s team. Leon kept pace with a below par Barcelona even though just one solitary player broke into double figures with Rick Hughes scoring 18 points. On the subject of games in Catalonia, there was a derby game in Sunday evening’s clash between DKV Joventut and Ricoh Manresa and it was a classic. Joventut came back in the final quarter outscoring Manresa 23-14 to pip their rivals 87-86. It was a great effort by Manresa who have taken the ACB by storm in the opening weeks after their promotion from LEB. Josh Asselin had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Manresa but it was Ricky Rubio with a match winning performance that prevailed as he top scored with 20 points. At Pisuerga, home team Valladolid were turned over by visiting Valencia by 70-81 with Ruben Douglas and Shammond Williams combining for 42 points with the latter also handing out 8 assists. The defeat was harsh on Bud Eley who scored 24 points and pulled down 8 rebounds for the hosts who had collapsed during the third quarter to hand the initiative to Valencia. A blistering final quarter helped Tau Ceramica overcome Gran Canaria 58-69 in a low scoring and poor quality affair. Neither team found any rhythm although Tau will be happy to have secured another win to maintain their status in the top four in the standings. Joel Freeland registered a DNP. ViveMenorca almost staged a remarkable recovery at Polaris World Murcia but finally went down 71-68. They had trailed 29-9 after a horrendous first period but then controlled the middle two quarters to get themselves back in the game. However Murcia held firm helped by a stunning 15 rebounds from Jose Triguero. On Saturday night, Madrid travelled to Girona and inflicted a third defeat of the season on the hosts who had won their first four games. Real meanwhile have just one loss to their name after this 83-94 win. There was just no stopping the red-hot Charles Smith who scored 29 points and Luis Bullock who scored 19 points. In the capital, Fuenlabrada left it late to overcome a confident Granada team that had led going into the final quarter. They eventually ran out 74-70 winners after blowing the visitors out 24-13 in the last ten minutes with Marko Thomas leading the way with 20 points. Dylan Page top scored for Granada with |

ROUND 9 26 NOV Round 9 of ACB action began a day early last weekend when on a rare Friday night spot, Pamesa Valencia continued their solid start to the season with a 74-67 win over Granada who are now fading after a strong opening to the campaign. Over 7,000 fans were treated to a hard fought game which Valencia just edged with Granada suffering from a loss of their outside game which proved costly. Ruben Douglas was again on form with 17 points to add to his impressive haul so far although scoring was harder to come by for the visitors with only Dylan Page and Curtis Borchardt barely scraping into double figures. On Saturday night the league saw two of the big clubs in Real and Tau pick up wins on the road. Madrid hung on in Murcia for a narrow 65-62 win to and also hung on for a share of top spot in the classifications with DKV Joventut. The side from the capital were cruising with a double figure lead after a strong opening but Polaris World Murcia showed they have plenty of fight, coming back in the second half. Juan Triguero just missed out on a double-double with 12 points and 9 boards for the home team while Joan Plaza’s team looked to still be reeling from their hammering at arch rivals Barca during the week in the Euroleague. Tau Ceramica meanwhile go from strength to strength under Coach Spahija. Their 87-98 victory at Grupo Begar Leon made possible because of a red hot shooting performance from Zoran Planinic and big man Pete Mickeal doing a great job deputising for James Singleton with 21 points while Leon coach Gustavo Aranzana will be glad his team put a nightmare third quarter behind them to add some respectability to the score-line and finish strongly with a 35-26 final period. DKV Joventut were hosting local rivals Akasvayu Girona and in front of a bumper crowd , stellar performances from the prodigious Ricky Rubio and Rudy Fernandez helped blow the visitors away 92-73. The duo combined for 25 points a piece and with Girona crumbling under the Badalona defence in the third quarter with too many turnovers, DKV pulled away before the final period. Only another monumental performance from Marc Gasol prevented a further damage with the big man claiming 19 points and 10 rebounds. Unicaja finally stopped the rot at home to ease the pressure. After two successive losses at the Martin Carpena, they bounced back by crushing hapless Valladolid 103-65. Boniface N’Dong continued his rich vein of form with 10 points and 10 boards while the team took full advantage of some non-existent Valladolid perimeter defence to shoot the lights out from outside. A stunning 35-19 quarter for the home team leaving the visitors chasing shadows. Bilbao are quietly picking up wins at home and having an improved season with some terrific results away from the Basque country including wins in Badalona and Malaga. In round 9 they were back on their home court and cruised to a comfortable 77-64 success over Menorca with Marko Banic having a perfect night from the field for his 15 points. The most impressive result of the weekend has to be Cajasol’s surprise mauling of Barcelona. The visitors came into the game full of confidence after their midweek win over Real but a truly shocking performance and a vibrant display from Seville left them reeling. The home team produced their best of the season to run out 75-58 winners with some fantastic perimeter defence to keep everyone but 17 point Jaka Lakovic in check. In fact no other Barcelona player managed double figures as Seville produced a stunning team effort to collect only their third win of the season. Andy Betts played as full role with just over 20 minutes for 9 points and a couple of boards. New Estu coach Javier Gonzales couldn’t inspire rock bottom Estudiantes to a second win of the season and after losing 86-79 at Ricoh Manresa they remain stranded at the bottom of the table. After struggling offensively of late, Florent Pietrus came to life again with a 26 point haul but it wasn’t enough with Manresa’s Matt Walsh hitting 25 points of his own to help the Catalan club pick up their fifth win of the campaign and remain in a play-off position. Daniel Clark did not feature for Estu. Finally Gran Canaria and Fuenlabrada met in a mid table meeting and Granca came out on top 75-64 after a truly outstanding final period when they held the Madrid side to just four points to take the win. Sergio Perez with 17 points for the home team. Joel Freeland played just over 5 minutes in this one but ended up with a negative valuation after missing his only shot, turning the ball over and failing to get anything positive on the sheet. |

ROUND 10 01/02 DEC The DKV Joventut bandwagon rolls on at the top of the ACB classifications after a comfortable 97-77 win over Polaris World Murcia on Saturday night in front of 6,000 fans. While the home team were in control throughout, they really stepped on the gas in the third quarter, blowing away the visitors 35-14 to sea yet another win. Coach Reneses will be particularly pleased at the manner of the victory with all his players contributing rather than the usual dominance from the likes of Fernandez. All ten players who took part got on the score sheet with an incredible seven of them also reaching double-figures. Just a short ride away from Badalona, their near neighbours Barca continued their challenge near the top of the table which had suffered a blow after defeat last weekend in Seville. Dusko Ivanovic and his side faced a tricky looking fixture against a rapidly improved and dangerous Pamesa Valencia but just did enough to squeeze out an 83-80 win at Palau Blaugrana. There has been little to choose between the teams throughout and some stifling defence by the home side to hold Valencia to just 7 final quarter points proved decisive. Not as decisive however as 26 points and four assists from the irrepressible Jaka Lakovic who continues to light up the ACB again. Shammond Williams weighed in with 28 points for Valencia meanwhile. Cajasol were hoping to continue on from their impressive display at home to Barca last week but were just edged out 76-74 at Valladolid. While they dominated the glass to control the boards and had 21 points from Michaelis Kakiouzis, it wasn’t enough and Javier Imbroda’s team completed a fine win. Andy Betts had a quiet game! In terms of drama, there has rarely been the type of play seen at ViveMenorca against CB Granada. Trailing by three points in the last second, Marko Marinovic hit a three-pointer to tie the game and was fouled, sinking the extra point to somehow steal the game from the stunned visitors. It was a high class dramatic finish which gave Menorca only their third win of the season. It was fitting that Marinovic hit the winning points as he scored 23 while team-mate Mario Stojic scored 20. For Granada it was difficult to take as they have lost some really close games already this season and had looked to be on for a win having blown away their hosts 22-8 in the second quarter to hold a double-figure lead at the break. In Sunday’s games, the big Basque derby game in Vitoria between Tau Cermica and Bilbao was won in dramatic fashion by the visitors 78-80. The win was yet another fine road victory for Bilbao who added Tau to DKV Joventut and Unicaja Malaga who they have already beaten on the road this season. 20 points from Marcelinho Huertas was instrumental in the victory and Blibao completed a miserable few days for the Baskonia fans who watched their team slump against CSKA Moscow in Euroleague only a few days ago. Unicaja completed a good 89-82 victory in the capital at Fuenlabrada as they continue their mini-revival and German Gabriel’s 18 points were important in setting up the win. Unicaja had looked to have lost their grip bny half-time when they trailed by six points, but two good quarters in the second half secured them the points. Unicaja move above Fuenlabrada who are now just three places from the bottom of the standings. That dubious honour remains with MMT Estudiantes who lost again but did put up a brave fight at Girona before finally going down by 82-76 in front of just 3,800 fans. Hernan Jasen produced a great 20 point performance but it wasn’t enough to overcome the home home side who had no less than six players all reaching douible figures with Marc Gasol still in hot form. He also claimed 12 rebounds for a double-double with Girona effectively winning the game in the third quarter when they found some rare daylight in what was otherwise a tight game throughout. No court-time for Dan Clark this week. Real Madrid remain neck and neck at the top with Badalona in second place after they overcome Grupo Begar Leon who remain stranded second from bottom in the classifications. The visitors did at least put up a fight in the first half of the game taking a shock lead 19-16 after the first period but that only stung Real into action. 19 points and four assists from Louis Bullock helping the Whites to a comfortable 96-80 success. Finally in Gran Canaria, the home team and Ricoh Manresa produced a really exciting contest with Granca eventually coming out on top 83-78. Sitapha Sivane was dominant with 15 points and 11 rebounds and he formed part of a powerful dup with Chris Massie recording his own fine double with 11 points and 13 boards. The loss was tough on Manresa’s Josh Asselin who top scored with 20. Joel Freeland played more minutes for Granca than he has in his ACB career with over ten minutes and did reasonably well without setting the world alight. |

round 11 DKV Joventut remain top of the classifications after Round 11 having picked up a hard fought victory 85-89 in Seville against Cajasol. Rudy Fernandez the match winner for Badalona with 19 points while Madrid born Eduardo Hernández-Sonseca weighed in with 17 points and missed just one shot in the entire game in an impressive shooting performance. Michalis Kakiouzis impressed for the home team with an outstanding display but Cajasol remain one of four teams all with a 3-8 record and tied for that dreaded second LEB relegation spot. Andy Betts played 26 minutes and claimed 6 points and 6 rebounds. Talking of relegation, at the other end of the spectrum, Valladolid travelled to the capital and delivered a devastating blow to the survival hopes of Estudiantes. The visitors took advantage of the home teams nerves in the final quarter to romp to am 87-75 win in front of over 8,000 distraught fans who have still only seen their team pick up one victory in the first eleven games. Many had predicted that Estu would pick up a second win after slight improvements in recent weeks and they looked well set after the first three periods but then folded spectacularly. They lost the final quarter 25-12 and slumped to defeat despite Larry Lewis’ 18 points and six rebounds. Valladolid had their big man Vasco Evtimov to thank with a great show from the Bulgarian who claimed a double-double. Dan Clark did not feature for Estu after not making their roster for this game. Real Madrid slipped into second place and lost ground on Joventut after a mighty fall in Malaga. Unicaja have had an indifferent start to the season but Sergio Scariolo’s side are now beginning to find some form and will be hoping that continues so they can sneak hold on to a Copa Del Rey place. They crushed the Whites 91-69 doing most of the damage either side of the break. Carlos Cabezas was in irresistible form with 16 points, 6 rebounds and an impressive 6 assists. In stark contrast it was a miserable performance by Joan Plaza’s team with little to cheer all round. Barcelona had to fight hard in their derby game with Ricoh Manresa but eventually came out on top 77-64. While they controlled the first half to lead by 9 at then break, they could never quite shake off the spirited home team and had to battle right to the end to secure an important win. Pepe Sanchez laid the foundations for this success with seven assists while big men Trias and Marconato combined for 25 points. Only Guillem Rubio and Rafa Martinez played to their full potential for Manresa who after a bright start to the season are beginning to fade into mid-table. The real surprise team of the season must be Bilbao who have made great strides from last year and they showed that they could be dark horses for some silverware this season after claiming fourth position with a dominant 78-62 demolition of Akasvayu Girona. Marcelo Huertas is now showing what he can do after being frustrated in Badalona and he came up with 21 points and 5 assists for the Basque club. Girona were poor and relied on Marc Gasol who received no support. He was the only player in his team to reach double figures and they slipped to seventh in the classifications as a result. Pamesa Valencia and Tau Ceramica are now tied on 7-4 records after contrasting fortunes over the weekend. The former cruised to a comfortable 85-69 victory over ViveMenorca while Tau surprisingly slumped 88-82 at Polaris World Murcia. Shammond Williams and Ruben Douglas were Menorca’s tormentors with 38 points between them and after a a poor start, Menorca did haul themselves back into the game. However Pamesa produced a strong finish to end the visitors hopes with Menorca struggling in third from bottom. Tau meanwhile looked to be heading for a win in Murcia but imploded in the final ten minutes. It was a great performance by Murcia who outscored Vitoria by 31-22 with a trio of hot performances getting the home team to the buzzer for the victory. Jimmie Hunter top scored with 25 points but it was an incredible 9 assists from Chris Thomas to go with his 15 points that proved vital. With José Triguero also coming up with 14 points and 9 rebounds, Coach Hussein will be delighted with an impressive display and win. The closest game of the Round came in Leon whee the home team edged out Fuenlabrada by 65-64 with Italian Javier Bufoni producing a stellar 27 point performance for the home team for whom it was only their third win of the season. A poor third quarter cost Fuenlabrada dear and they are now stranded with those other teams such as Leon with a 3-8 record. Another team pulling level with their rivals were Granada who are now 5 and 6 with Gran Canaria and locked In mid-table after an 85-79 win. A magnificent double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds by Curtis Borchardt the highlight although Carl English did rack up 26 points for Granca. Joel Freeland played over 15 minutes for the first time in his short ACB career and scored a creditable 10 point to go with 4 assists. |

round 12 The big two Barcelona and Real Madrid pulled level with DKV Joventut over the weekend after Real won in Badalona to inflict a second league loss on the home team. Over 12500 fans were treated to an exciting game with Badalona losing their slender half-time advantage in the second half as Real nudged themselves in front and hung on for an impressive 71-65 victory. Lousi Bullock ansd Belgian Axel Hervelle were the stars for the whites. Bullock scored a game high 19 points and Real snuffed out the numerous threats of Joventut for whom nobody played well. Barcelona needed overtime to shake off Tau Ceramica who will be kicking themselves that they did not finish the job in regulation time after leading in the closing minutes./ Once Barcelona pulled level at 71-71, they then shut out Tau for the first three minutes of overtime to take the initiative and enable them to finally pick up the 89-85 win. While Jaka Lakovic had an awful shooting night, his seven assists helped Barca as did 14 points and 8 rebounds from Italian veteran Denis Marconato. Pete Mickeal and Tiago Splitter stood out for Tau who had led by as many as 6 points in the final quarter. Tau now have five losses to their name and slipped down the classifications. While the top three teams all only have two losses, at the bottom Estudiantes finally picked up only their second win of the campaign. After disappointment last week at home to Valladolid, Estu showed some courage to win a tight game against Gran Canaria in the capital. They may be struggling but almost 10,000 fans were ecstatic with their 68-65 victory which leaves them just one win from the teams above them. A strong second quarter provided the platform for the win as did a phenomenal performance from Carlos Suarez who top scored with 26 points and converted four three-pointers. Carl English continued his good form for Granca with 19 points of his own to go with 7 rebounds. Bilbao’s incredible season continued after a thrilling 75-74 win at Valladolid and they still have only three losses to their name so far. The home team will be disappointed with the loss and wil regret allowing the visitors to control the boards. Frederic Weis pulled down 12 rebounds for Bilbao who produced a great fight back in the second half after trailing at half-time. Pamesa Valencia continue looking like a team with one eye on a trophy this year. After several seasons of under achievement they are really clicking into gear and this was bad news for Grupo Begar Leon. The home team crushed the visitors 96-74 mainly because Leon competed in every period but fell apart before the half-time break in a terrible spell when Shammond Williams and Co took full advantage. The former NBA player scored 20 points while Albert Oliver dished up an impressive 8 assists. Cajasol picked up a comfortable 78-65 win against Polaris World Murcia after dominating the first half. The home team opened up with a 22-10 first quarter and then Increased their advantage to 22 points by half time. While Murcia fought back in the third period with Jose Triguero leading the way for the visitors, Seville cantered to victory after a more respectable fourth quarter. English centre Andy Betts claimed 13 rebounds for Cajasol while Andres Miso scored 20 points. In Sunday night’s games, Unicaja’s rise to prominence continued as Akasvayu Girona’s slump continued. Malaga travelled to the Catalan club and picked up an impressive 83-73 win to climb above the hosts in the classifications. Jiri Wlesh was on form for the visitors with 19 points and the ex NBA player was well supported by Gabriel German and Boniface N’Dong. Unicaja sealed the game with an impressive final quarter when they outscored Girona 30-19. The defeat was tough on the game’s MVP who Branko Cvetkocic with the Serbian scoring 27 points. Finally after a number of narrow losses this season, CB Granada came out on top in a tight affair at Ricoh Manresa. They chalked up an Impressive 76-74 win even though their star Curtis Borchardt was held to a paltry five points. It was a good team performance by the visitors who climbed into eighth position with this victory. |

ROUND 13 Estudiantes remain last in the classifications after they lost out in a bottom of the table Madrid derby clash at Fuenlabrada. It had looked like the visitors might collect their third win and pull level with the hosts early in the final quarter when Estu began to take control in a nervous and low scoring game. Both teams showed their lack of confidence and struggled offensively with the game tied at just 28-23 by half-time. Estudiantes had only Larry Lewis in form and he carried the team with 16 points and 12 rebounds but there was very little support. With Marko Tomas in sensational form for the home club, top scoring with 20 points, they eventually ran out 63-59 winners. The third club in Madrid meanwhile now sit proudly at the very top of the standings with Real having produced a dominant second half performance against ViveMenorca to claim a 98-74 victory. Menorca had stunned the Whites with their spirited first half display but they fell apart in the second half and were outscored 49-29 to lose another road game. They had no answer to Charles Smith and his 20 points. DKV Joventut suffered their third loss of the season and lost joint-top status with Real after they went down in Gran Canaria by 75-69. The result all the more remarkable because Badalona had managed to hold Granca to just 7 points in the third quarter. It was a terrific team performance by the hosts who had four starters getting into double-figures including young British forward and Portland draft Joel Freeland who scored 10 points for the first time. Badalona’s neighbours Barcelona also slipped to three losses for the season after going down at a resurgent Unicaja who are continue to look a real force and especially at home where they collected a 77-62 win. There was not much in the first haldf but Malaga blew Barca away 26-13 in the third and never looked back. While Barca’s Jaka Lakovic scored 24 points, so did Marcus Haislip for Unicaja to complete a double-double with his 10 rebounds. Bilbao moved up into third spot to underline their terrific season and this time they had yet another tight game and came out on top after an impressive 68-65 win over Pamesa Valencia. Strong on the glass all game, the home team rallied in the final period having trailed and squeezed past the visitors after keeping the dangerous Shammond Williams quiet. After a great start, Ricoh Manresa’s season is now in freefall after just one win in eight games. Their latest loss was a 94-59 humiliation at Polaris World Murcia and nott a surprise after they persistently failed to rebound and lost that count by a massive 47-22 which told the story of the game. Murcia climbed above Manresa after this result. Granada moved into eighth spot but needed overtime to overcome Andalucian neighbours Cajasol by 81-76. The home side thought they had the win in the bag but a brave final quarter fight back from Seville forced the extra time after they overturned a double-figure deficit. 20 points from Andres Miso was vital for Cajasol as was 12 points and 8 rebounds from British big man Andy Betts. However Andre Pecile collected a game high 27 points for the home club to force the win. Finally Akasvayu Girona collected a 72-81 win at struggling Grupo Begar Leon despite a massive 29 points and 13 from Rick Hughes for the home team. |

29 DEC ROUND 14 Round 14 in the ACB resulted in a 4 way tie at the top of the classiifciations with surprise team of the season Bilbao in second postion on basket difference. Bilbao produced another road win, this time at Ricoh Manresa with the 83-76 success more staggering as the Basque club had to recover from a terrible 24-5 opening quarter. With Marcelino Huertas continuing his scintillating form , Bilbao recovered with the former Badalona guard claiming 20 points to go with 8 assists. While Manresa will be disappointed to have lost yet another game they will at least take heart from having pushed Bilbao and recovered from a hammering at Murcia in the previous round. DKY Joventut are back on top after a fine 97-82 win over a resurgent Unicaja who had Marcs Haislip again in form with 24 points. However the home team had Rudy Fernandez to inspire them with 23 points , 8 assists and five steals in an all action performance. An awful first quarter cost Malaga dear after they failed to get started, never recovering from being 15 points behind after the first ten minutes. Joan Plaza will be disappointed with his teams performance at the Palau Blaugrana where 7,000 fans enjoyed Barca’s crushing 84-65 defeat of their bitter rivals from the capital. Real were poor all night and apart from an impressive e double-double from Felipe Reyes, they could muster very little else to compete with the home team. Dusko Ivanovic watched in joy as his team tore apart the Whites with 22 assists highlighting the ball movement and team performance that destroyed Real. Gianluca Basile top scoring with 23 points. Tau Ceramica kept in touch with the four leaders and are in fifth spot after a convincing 77-56 win at Cajasol who slip to fourth bottom of the table after an inconsistent first few months of the season. Zoran Planinic scored 24 points as Tau cruised to victory winning every quarter against a lifeless home team with 10 rebounds from Andy Betts one of the few highlights for the struggling Seville club. Tied with the same record as Tau are Pamesa Valencia who recorded a 73-67 home win over Polaris World Murcia thanks mainly to a starring role from ex-NBA player Shammond Williams. However the game MVP was Murcia’s Jose Triguero who picked up 10 rebounds to go with 17 points. At the bottom of the classifications, Estudiantes fans are now breathing a huge sigh of relief after they finally moved off the bottom of the standings. While they are only in second bottom place with the same record as Grupo Begar Leon, there is some light at the end of the tunnel after they picked up onlt their third win of the season. 19 points from Larry Lewis and an impressive third quarter performance set up the 74-63 win over Granada. Leon meanwhile continue to struggle and they went down 69-63 against likely relegation rivals ViveMenorca. A poor final period cost the visitors dear after they had looked on course to pick up a crucial win having looked the better team with a strong performance on the boards and having Lamont Barnes as the games outstanding player. However despite Menorca not producing a great performance, the home team sneaked home after finding some form in the closing minutes. Fuenlabrada are in real trouble with Leon, Estu and Cajasol and have slipped to third from bottom, just one place away from a relegation position. Their latest result was a 91-86 reverse at Valladolid as they again have a season with poor away form. They will certainly need their home form to save them again as has happened previously. While Jorge Garcia produced a stellar performance with 27 points, he had nobody else helping him and the home team took advantage with Jospeh Gomis and Ridrio San Migeul combining for 40 points for Valladolid. Finally in Girona, Akasvayu recorded a 76-59 win over Gran Canaria who continue to excel at home and die a death on the road. Jackson Vroman produced a great performance against his former club with 21 points and 14 rebounds. |

ROUND 15 It was a dramtic round at the top of the classifications and a bad weekend for the Barcelona clubs who both lost ground on Bilbao and Real at the top after defeats. A spectacular third quarter by Tau Ceramica turned the game against DKV Joventut on it’s head after it looked like Rudy and Co were on their way to an impressive win with a 14 point lead at the break. However the home team came out fired up and blew Badalona all the way back to Catalunya with a 34-12 third quarter to eventually prevail by 80-73. Stunning stuff made possible thanks to 8 assist from Zoran Planinic and 23 points from Igor Rakocevic. Fernandez finished with 27 points and 7 assists but Joventut were too soft on the boards and part of the reason asto why they were blown out in the penultimate quarter. A similarly impressive performance was put in by ViveMenorca who are slowly pulling themselves away from trouble at the bottom after a convincing and hugely important 85-68 win over Barcelona. Few had expected Ricard Casas and his players to get the positive result against a side that were coming into the game having blown away Real in the previous game. However Menorca came out quickly and a lacklustre Barca simply never recovered. To make matters worse for Dusko Ivanovic, just when they were about to get back into the game, the home team stepped on the gas in the final period to show they have a lot of heart and are up for the fight ahead to establish themselves in ACB. Mario Stojic was in fine form for the hosts with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Real completed a routine victory at home over Ricoh Manresa who slip down the standings to just fourth from bottom after two of their main rivals picked up wins. The 94-70 loss at Vistalegre was inevitable as they suffered a backlash from Real’s poor performance at Barcelona in the Classico in the previous game. Real are not however on top of the standings with that accolade going to the worthy leaders Bilbao. The Basque club finish 2007 sitting proudly on top of the ACB in an unexpected position with their latest success coming by way of a 73-67 win over Estudiantes in front of a packed Bizkaia Arena. With Huertas pulling the strings again to pick up 8 asissts, Bilbao are really showing the way when it comes to the team concept with another strong rebounding performance and a total of 16 assists. Estu meanwhile remain second from bottom but are showing signs that they will have more than enough to eventually haul themselves out of trouble. Estu’s escape plan hasn’t been made any easier with the likes of Menorca beating Barca but also what was perhaps the most important result of the week and that was struggling Fuenlabrada picking up a thrilling and vitally important away victory at Polaris World Murcia. Away wins for the capital’s third club don’t come too often but this 73-72 win relieves the pressure and was an outstanding display of courage. On a poor run of form, the visitors looked to be dead and buried by half-time as they trailed by 44-26. They gave themselves an outside shot with a strong third quarter but still had to produce a magnificent 27-16 final period to somehow take the win. 23 points and 12 rebounds from a back to form Tom Wideman pivotal in this contest. Cajasol slumped to another disappointing loss, this time going down 88-79 at Valencia who are still tied with Tau Ceramica with a 10-5 season record. Rubvenb Douglas scored 24 points for the home side and with Shammond Williams directing traffic with 9 assists, Cajasol were always up against it with 20 points from Tyrone Ellis their only highlight of the game. Almost 7,000 fans watched Granada overcome Girona 98-90 with Carlos Gianella and Andrea Pecile combining for a mammoth 50 points to get the home team a win as they now climb out of the mid table zone into 8th position and tied with their opponents. The game was tied at the half but with Pecile getting to the hoop in the second, they win this game from the free throw line. On the same record as both Granda and Girona are Unicaja with the Malaga club cruising to a 101-86 win over Gran Canaria who are now falling down the table with their usual poor away form. A 32-21 opening period set the tome for the Malaga club as Jiri Welsch top scored with 20 points. Granca had foru of it’s players all finishing with 14 points. Finally Valladolid completed a win against their rivals Grupo Begar Leon with a 74-69 victory in the final game of Round 15 as Joseph Gomis grabbed 19 points. |

Round 16 + 17 Round 16 Real Madrid are now ghe outright leaders after Round 16 having won a close game in Seville against Cajasol who are now struggling in third from bottom of the table. It had looked like the home team had recovered from an awful start and to their credit pushed the league leaders all the way but lost out 77-74. Tyrone Ellis scored 19 points for Cajasol but the star of the game was Felipe Reyes who scored 32 points to go with 3 steals and 2 blocks. Andrew Betts meanwhile played 24 minutes or 9 points, 4 boards and 2 blocks. Barcelona hosted surprise challengers Bilbao aware that the visitors have won some big games on the road this season but Dusko Ivanovic watched his team produce a great second half performance to pick up a 73-66 win as they held Bilbao to just 26 points. Roger Grimau top scoring with 14 points as five Barca players reached double-figures. Huertas picked up 23 points for Bilbao but didn’t receive any real support from his team-mates. DKV Joventut slipped to another loss as their form begins to wane. They were beaten at home to an impressive and dangerous Pamesa Valencia outfit who have made great strides since last year and could be set for some silverware this season. Their 92-85 victory in Badalona being set up by a blistering opening period when they opened up a double-figure lead. The dynamic duo of Ruben Douglas and Shammond Williams unstoppable as they scored 26 and 18 points respectively. It means that Pamesa now hgave the same 11-5 record as Joven tut who for so long led the standings until recently. Also tied on 11-5 with those two teams are Tau Ceramica with Baskonia picking upo a comfortable 90-80 home win against CB Granada. An impressive team performance from the home team who were 15 points up at the half and with the job just about done. The 39 rebounds and 18 assists showing Tau’s strength as Igor Rakocevic recorded 20 points. Arguably the biggest game in the ACB over the weekend was in Madrid where the bottom two teams met with Estudiantes hosting Grupo Begar Leon. It was an incredible game with nerves of Estu fans torn to shreds after their team had to fight back from a great Leon start to somehow edge the game 85-83. A stellar performance from Florent Pietrus helped Estu over the line but whether the home fans recover from such a drama is another thing. Clearly the Madrid club still have some way to go to get out of trouble if they are to struggle so much against Leon who now look unlikely to make any run although they are only a couple of wins from safety. Dan Clark did not feature on Estu’s roster. Elsewhere in Madrid, Fuenlabrada also lifted the gloom a little with a fantastic 93-75 win over Akasvayu Girona. Valencia born veteran Salva Guardia rolling back the years with an incredible 29 points and 8 rebounds as a 32-14 third quarter won the game for the home club. The biggest result of the round was perhaps Ricoh Manresa pulling off a shock 89-81 win over Unicaja. 26 points from Rafa Martinez vital as was a strong finish to the game that saw off the Malaga club who had been in a good run of form of late. Carlos Cabezas had 22 points for the visitors. ViveMenorca are back in trouble after crashing 91-74 at Gran Canaria who themselves were in danger of being dragged into the relegation fight before this important win. A 33-14 second quarter from Granca turned the game in front of an unusually low but holiday affected crowd of just 3450. Joel Freeland played 16 minutes for 5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Finally in Vallodolid, the home team continued their progression under Javier Imbroda with a comfortable 83-66 win over Polaris World Murcia. Brian Boddicker the star of the game with 20 points in an impressive display of shooting from the home team who converted 52% from the arc. Round 17 Real Madrid meanwhile remain out in front at the top of the classifications after being pushed for three quarters of the game by Gran Canaria. The Whites were stung after Granca came out with all guns blazing to race into an unexpected 25-14 first quarter lead and although the home team fought back, the visitors still led by 4 at the half. However after an unhappy Joan Plaza had given his thoughts that break, Real came alive in the second half to blow Gran Canaria away in the third quarter and secure an 89-77 victory. Felipe Reyes the pick of the game with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Barcelona crashed to an unexpected 92-85 loss at Polaris World Murcia who held Barca to just 12 third quarter points and then racked up 32 points in a blistering final quarter to seal the win. Jimmie Hunter top scored for Murcia with 23 points while Jaka Lakovic continued to be the main man for Dusko Ivanovic and his team with 22 points. There was high drama on Saturday night in Valencia where Tau Ceramica sneaked a thrilling 76-74 victory over Pamesa thanks to two free-throws by 24 point MVP Igor Rakocevic. There was very little to choose between the teams in terms of league positioning and that was borne out during the game with Rakocevic the difference between the sides. Stanko Barac just missed out on a double-double for the home team with 13 points and 9 rebounds. DKV Joventut got back to winning ways in Granada with a terrific 31-15 final quarter paving the way for their 85-76 success. Their win came despite a stealler performance by Curtis Borchardt of Granada who scored 11 points but pulled down a staggering 19 rebounds before fouling out. Despite his great display, he was not the standout player in the game with Rudy Fernandez showing why NBA eyes are have been on him. The Badalona star picked up a massive line of 34 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals to help seal the win and break Granada hearts by ending their slip chance of Cope Del Rey qualification. Bilbao remain in second place after securing a hard fought 75-68 home win against Fuenlabrada who led by three points going into the final period but then dried up as Bilbao put the defensive squeeze on them to take the win. While the 5,000 home fans knew it wasn’t the best performance from their team, it was another win in what is turning out to be an incredible season for the Basque club who are of course safely through to the Copa Del Rey at near neighbours Vitoria next month. There were plenty grabs for the Copa Del Rey in a tough fight for the last spots in the final qualification round and Unicaja booked their place after surviving a late scare against Andalucian neighbours Cajasol. The game looked to have been comfortably won by the Malaga club but a late rally by Seville narrowed the gap to 82-77 by the final buzzer. 22 points from Marcus Haislip kept Malaga on top while Michal Ignerski collected 20 points for the visitors who slipped to second from bottom of the classifications. At the bottom of the standings their was one of the most incredible comebacks in the history of the ACB when Estudiantes overcome a 27 point deficit in the final 11 minutes at ViveMenorca to record an improbable 73-77 success. The 32-8 final quarter was astonishing and the win moves Estu out of the bottom two relegation places and just one victory behind Menorca. Leon remain rooted to the bottom after a crushing home loss to Ricoh Manresa. The 81-78 defeat means Leon still have just three wins to their name all season. 23 points from Josh Asselin were pivotal for Manresa who move on to seven wins and into the relative safety of mid-table. In Sunday evening’s game the scenario was perfect with a place in the Copa Del Rey up for grabs between Akasvayu Girona and Valladolid. It was the home team that prevailed 84-74. Girona won the first three quarters and were dominant before Valladolid staged a late comeback but it never looked like it would be enough. Typically Marc Gasol led his side to the win with 23 points and 7 rebounds as he continues with another highly impressive season. |

ROUND 18 The first game in Round 18 saw Madrid Giants Estudiantes slump back into the relegation spots with a woeful home performance against Polaris World Murcia. Just when it looked as if they were set to pull away from those at the bottom, they slumped to a 54-63 home loss in front of almost 10,000 disgruntled fans. Despite scoring 20 points in the first quarter and somehow leading at the half, they managed just another 33 in the next three quarters of basketball as the visitors scored 23 in the final period to pick up a vital win and void slipping into trouble themselves. Estu were completely out muscled on the boards and this set the tone for the loss as did 24 points and 6 boards from the impressive Jimmie Hunter. Nobody impressed for the home team who will now be fearing the worst after this performance. Estu had to sit and wait 24 hours to drop into the relegation zone after Cajasol Seville picked up an unlikely but terrific 69-67 win at Akasvayu Girona in a hard fought game which will give them great heart after a poor run of form recently. A great first half was the key for Seville who managed 50 points to establish a 15 point lead at the break and while they dried up to score a paltry 19 points in the second half, they hung on to clinch the win. English centre Andrew Betts managed a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for Cajasol as did Marc Gasol for the home team who scored 18 points to go with his 11 boards. A stunning final quarter by Fuenlabrada wasn’t enough in the Madrid derby against Real as the visitors hung on to take the game 79-76 and remain top of the classifications. The game looked to be stitched up for the Whites when they led 61-47 but the home team rattled off 29 points in the final period to give the leaders an almighty scare. Real’s Luis Bullock top scored in the game with 17 points in front of almost 6,000 fans. It was a similar story in Malaga where Unicaja hosted Pamesa Valencia and looked to be cruising before the visitors also produced a late fight back to get the nerves jangling. The away team outscored their hosts by 30-19 in the final quarter but never recovered enough from a disastrous opening period when they found themselves trailing 24-8. Consequently Unicaja managed to pick up an 80-77 win thanks mainly to 25 points from Marcus Haislip while Ruben Douglas also notched 25 points for Valencia. There were two big results in Gran Canaria and at Ricoh Manresa who beat Barcelona and Tau Ceramica. In the Canary Islands, Granca had Carl Engoish to thank as his 28 points and five three-pointers paved the way for a convincing 88-74 win over Dusko Ivanovic and a Barca team that is really beginning to struggle on the road as they picked up their sixth loss of the season. In Catalunya, Manresa shocked Vitoria and inflicted a sixth defeat on their visitors as Tau went down 85-83. In a tight game, Josh Asselin proved pivotal as the forward delivered 23 points and 12 rebounds for the home team who dominated the glass against Tau while Javi Rodriguez dished up an impressive 9 assists. While Pablo Prigioni had 7 assists of his own for Tau to go with Tiago Splitter and his 23 points, Coach Spahija will also be concerned about his teams recent form away from the Fernando Buesa. Bilbao remain in second place after completing a routine 90-70 win over basement strugglers Group Begar Leon who look resigned to going back to the LEB with just three wins in four months and three wins from safety. It is looking bleak for Aranzana and his players and it didn’t help to go 15 points behind in the first quarter against a successful but usually low scoring Bilbao side. It gave Leon a mountain to climb and they couldn’t do it with 21 points from Javier Salgado the pick for the Basque title challengers. Valladolid moved level with Girona with a 9-9 record and into the play-off spot reckoning with a comfortable 83-67 win over Granada. A 28-10 second quarter blew the Andalucian club away and ended their hopes with Frenchman Joseph Gomis collecting 21 points and 6 assists while for Granada, only Dylan Page managed to get into double figures with 25 points but not a lot of support from his team-mates. Finally, DKV Joventut had to be patient to see off a battling ViveMenorca to eventually win 87-71 thanks to a strong final quarter. It was a magnificent 35 points from the unstoppable Rudy Fernandez that helped the Badalona club to hold on to third place in the standings. |
