21 sep the transformation of the oldest franchise in the bbl Hello everyone! I am Gareth John, a sixteen year old English Language AS Level Student with a burning passion for the sport of Basketball. I play National League level in the under 18 Premier Midlands with Leicester Beauchamp Cannons, play for the Academy at Beauchamp College, where we won the National Championships last year. I am a fanatical, die-hard Leicester Riders fan. Always have been and always will be! As someone who was there at the emergency meeting when Riders looked as if they were at last chance Saloon, outlining how much it costs them to run a season, how this is broken down and virtually begging for some committed and brave volunteers to stick there arm in the air and offer to help with these costs, I remember there being a very downbeat atmosphere. The tone of Dan Routhledge and Mike Steptoe’s collective voice becoming wearier and wearier as they answered questions, whilst the chairman of the meeting, Mark Ellis tried to keep things moving forward and up-beat. They all were desperate for their beloved club to survive, just like the rest of us. In summary, the situation looked bleak and irreparably declining, with a looming deadline of the Friday of that week (the meeting was on the Tuesday) looking as if it would never be met. One, Mike Davies was there as well as the chief operations officer of the BBL, Andy Webb, who I am sure most of us receive e-mails from every so often. The turnout of fans was pretty impressive, and Davies, the heart and soul of the rise of Guildford Heat from the ashes of Thames Valley Tigers, chose his moment to have an impact. In a passionate and admirable outburst, he told the group of near heart-broken fans that they must pull together and do what ever they had to do. If this meant having a player lodge in your house, so be it. The question he put to the fans that night was ‘How much do you love your club?’ Now judging by the number of season ticket forms that were handed out by the clearly thrilled Mark Ellis (chairman of the supporters club), it looked like the fans at the meeting intended to show the BBL that Riders have clawed back before, and will do it again; that they are worth a place in the BBL Now we have one of the biggest housing firms in the region on board as our main sponsor, an experienced general manager in place, a fantastically experienced coach in Martin Ford, and players such as Chad McKnight and Rod Wellington on board. We have a good mix of college stars from the States, experienced BBL personnel and young, hungry, British talent. I look forward to blogging for Badaball and you can count on hearing my views loud and clear as the season gets into full swing! |
