Absolutely superb. That is the best, most interesting insight to a sportsman's life I have ever read. The mixture of comedy, fact, explanation etc is just so good. Everything about this man just gets better and better. Entirely take out his basketball, and he remains the most perfect role model you could wish to find. If basketball was of any significant part of the British public psyche, then Luol would be head and shoulders the most popular and famous sportsperson in this country. Luol may yet find true fame in Britain. Its that word again, the Olympics, simply the most powerful "tool" in the entire world. Brits love team sports, its just its so foccused on three of them; Football, Cricket and Rugby. Come the Olympics, only Football participates and currently we don't enter. There is thus a huge void. There are many team sports, we just don't have the international class to enter most. But this can be filled. Just remember the Seoul Olympics when Hockey just exploded as GB won the Gold. That gripped the nation; Sean Kerly became a household name; "Where were the Germans ... Frankly who cares". Now we aren't going to win any medals, but I believe we can compete come 2012. Basketball has the biggest potential to be the team sport to grip the nation in 2012. Perversely the reason is that to Joe Public, Basketball is perceived as a major sport, just that its major in the US. Joe Public will have little view of the power of European Basketball. Speak to anybody who has a interest in sport, and virtually to a man they will be aware of the NBA and can probably name one or two teams and throw in a Michael Jordan to boot. Try the same for any other Olympic Sport. Basketball will win hands down, 99% of the time I suspect. Anybody who wants Basketball to expand in Britain, must realise that the Olympics is the key to this. But at the same time it is no more than the biggest marketing tool any sport/organisation can ever get. It is what is built around it that counts. Work on the infrastructure must start now. From the BBL down to grass roots. Don't wait until the Olympics, see an explosion in interest and react then; its way too late. Hockey tried to build from the Olympics. Intially creating some form of Elite League. There was an initial success; I remember following the results, but it died down soon after. The world was a different place then; today it is far easier to quantify the reasons to be pro-active. Others are far better placed than me to suggest how to move forward from the grass roots level. But if I had one word of advice at the top of the Pyramid, it is to build up the interest in GB prior to the Olympics. The single best way is to some how find a way to get GB Division A matches on terrestrial (before it all goes digital !!!). In a perfect world these would be Eurobasket matches, but being realistic that is a heck of jump to qualify. |

Great Blog Luol Deng is an absolute legend (just a shame he's a Gooner but no one's perfect) Agree he is an amazing role model - can't believe that with that schedule he's also learning French! Being in Divison A gives a real chance of terrestrial TV picking up GB games next year - if we qualify for Eurobasket 2009 then I think those games would definitely be shown. |

I'll settle for Division A matches 'live'. I'm not that fussed about whether they're on terrestrial or not(the terrestrial channels are hit and miss in terms of quality of basketball coverage anyway). |

Good article. What a top bloke. We are lucky to have him. (Just want to disagree with one thing All String wrote- there are 4 team sports in this country. 'Rugby' is two different sports and has been since 1895. They are as different as basketball and handball. Just go on any Rugby League forum to see what they think of Union. Union tends to have a dismissive attitude towards League - just look at the Union world cup which is called 'Rugby' World Cup and the fact that the Vichy government in France during WWII banned Rugby League and forced League teams to play Union!! Personally I like both...) |

Ben, I initially put Union on the end, then dropped it. Whilst I totally agree they are two totally different sports, is Rugby League really on par with Union in terms of the mass British public. Granted in the North of England it is big, but is it nationally really a major sport. Players/Coaches in Football/Cricket/Union are household names. I really don't think that is true across the country for League. Ultimately League suffers due to there being such limited international competition. If I remember correctly, the recent Rugby League World Cup had the power nations in a single Group with three qualifying for the Semi's in order to maintain some level of competition. I'm not critiscing League, I watched a lot on TV when I was younger and had more free time. The truth is in the south of England I'd expect significantly more people to be able to name a basketball player than a Rugby League player. |

That's what will happen at the next RL World Cup in Australia next year Afraid you're right about RL and the South - London were the only club to see their average gate drop by over 1000 this year which coincided with a name change from Broncos to Harlequins |

sorry to keep raising the point... His story is now the first one on the main picture news on nba.com... talking about his off season in general as well as some gb.... www.nba.com also if you follow the link to the story , he made number 6 on the Global top 10... just ahead of basketball without borders.. and nash's good cause.. SEE HERE Even though the mentions of GB are only here and there, at least its making those yanks aware that we have a team, and an improving one at that. so its all good in myeyes. |

Agree to a certain extent about the international dimension to football and rugby union but remember England's (home) internationals are on terrestrial so too is rugby union's six nations and world cup. Rugby League's internationals aren't noticed by the general public partly because they are shown live on Sky. I think BPB should do everything it can to get the GB games on 'normal' tv. Having the games on Sky is, of course, better than nothing but is unlikely to get many casual observers watching it. I would think that the BBC would be looking to increase its coverage of Olympic sports leading up to 2012. They seem to be showing international rowing championships fairly often (although we have already been successful in that sport). I think what we really need to raise the profile is for Luol to be in a big Nike TV campaign where he could perhaps mention his pride of playing for GB etc - I think that might get people curious about the GB team. (I know this is a basketball forum but just one more quick point about rugby league/union....interstingly the RU Premiership and RL SuperLeague both average gates of about 10,000 but the RU Premiershp gets way more press coverage. Also the tv viewing figures for games on Sky are higher for SuperLeague than for the RU Premiership. I've also read that viewing figures for RL SuperLeague games outside the north of England are far higher than you would think - I'm sure I read somewhere that half the viwers are from outside the 'heartlands', like myself in Herts.) |

Agreed, fantastic article. How about voting for him for the BBC sports personality of the year award? I for one will be so i urge you all to do the same. I guess you will though. He won't win it, but my hope is some more exposure to the mainstream, afterall he has done wonders these last couple of weeks and helped Gb to the next level. Tv wise i would like to see Channel 5 or Eurosport grab the rights. I think both will do a very good & ultimately push our exposure up even more. This is a huge off season for BPB. Pull your fingers out now, get contacting the media, do some proper game advertising, speak to the BBL! You never know where this could take us, but if the BPB pull all the stops & there is no increase in the exposure, at least they can say they tried. SUPPORT TEAM GB SPREAD THE WORD |
