Am i right in thinking some of the top teams don't even have to qualify for Eurobasket 2009? If so who automatically qualifies?

Geographically & probably favourably i would like to see GB in a group similar to this,

GB
BELGIUM
GERMANY
POLAND
PORTUGAL

All easy to get to for the fans, in which i will try to get to all away games next year & beyond. I also believe the draw will be made shortly after Eurobasket has finished, which is something to look forward to.

All teams must qualify, apart from the host country, but not all teams have to play in the Qualifying Tournament in 2008. At the moment, apart from Poland, which is the host country for 2009, Spain is the only country to have qualified directly.

Since the qualifying tournament is next year, you should be able to deduce which teams (although so far we can only name Spain) qualify directly.

The Olympics are next year, so I doubt they'll make teams that are playing in the Olympics go through Eurobasket qualifying too! :wink

Yeah i forgot about that. So in a nutshell qualification could become slightly easier for all teams not just ourselves. Is Eurobasket determining the Olympic qualifiers and the Olympics determining the Worlds??????????????

Eurobasket 2007 will determine the Olympic qualfiers both direct and via the World Repechage Event

Eurobasket 2009 will determine the qualifiers for the Worlds in 2010

I read in the news today, Spain and Poland are already qualified to Euro 2009. The NT qualified to the Olympics are qualified too, as the teams qualifying for the "repechage".. assuming that Spain will end in the first 6 and knowing that Poland has been knocked out from this year championships, it means the teams ending from 1 to 7 in Spain gets the qualifications (Spain included) plus Poland. All the others teams from Div. A will have to earn qualifications next year. They will be drawn in 4 groups playing in summer 2008, the 4 winners and the three best second classified get the qualification to Poland. So it's 1 (Poland) + 1 (Spain) + 6 (European 2007 qualified) + 7 (2008 qualifiers) = 15 teams.. the last team will be determined by another tournament with the teams who didn't qualify in 2008, like the one that qualified Israel this summer. Further I think the last classified in the last tournament has to play to avoid relegation in a kind of "final Three" tournament like Hungary, Sweden ad Danemark had to do this year.

Sorry for my bad english, I wish you get what I wrote..

Talking of miracles, whilst we were beating Switzerland on Tuesday night, Finland lost away by 7 to Romania in the other Play-Off First Leg.

Finland now lead, 90-36 at the end of the 3rd Quarter in the 2nd Leg!

Division A is really going to come down to, "can we beat a team that was in Eurobasket 2007?" ideally on the court or, if Irving's intel is good, when records between second place teams are compared. Answer is, maybe.

1. Re-inforcements will be welcome.

2. Depends which of the Eurobasket '07 sides we play. Forgetting about the Euro sides in the Beijing Olympic repechage for the moment and checking out team rosters, I'd say I'd be satisfied if we avoided France but should beat Portugal or the Czech Republic.

Of course that assuming no surprises from the '07 non-qualifiers.

FIBA decided to make eight teams exempt from having to qualify for Eurobasket 2009. They are the top seven from Madrid- Russia, Spain, Lithuania, Germany, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia- and hosts Poland

The rest of Division A will compete in next summers qualifying round split into three groups of four and one of five. The group winners and the three best rummers up will qualify, with the rest going to a repechage tournament with one spot available

The teams will be seeded based on Fiba Europe Rolling 3 year scoring system. That is to say that the the teams are likely to be much seeded 1 to 4. The seeding during the qualification does not really mean that much because it really depends on the players that make themselves available to play.

For example France will not have Tony Parker and a couple of other players that play in the NBA. The same applies to some of the other countries.

:tsk :tsk I am not that fond of that rule, too many teams are exempt

I will prefer us to play for qualification, like we did in football.....

well it seems that we will not meet in qualification games so i wish you to have lots of luck in the draw and qualify for final stage!

Haven't all those teams, Poland excepted, been made exempt from qualifying because they will be playing in the Olympic Games next year and as such won't have the time to compete in the qualifying tourney? :dunno
