Irving,

the document I have in my possession was published in 2004, but I found the latest version of the document on the FIBA Europe website. It says the same in that document which was placed on the website just a week ago. See my post above for the link.

As for it being too much for teams to compete in both, are you suggesting that teams that qualify for the Olympics from the Pre-Olympic tournament will have it any easier?

The only reason I thought they'd be exempt was that it wouldn't be fair on the rest of Division A if they can't make arrangements for games
(venues, travel etc) until three weeks before the games are due to be played

You have a very good point Glenn. The logistics of dealing with the uncertainty of which teams would be playing in Division A qualification would suggest that it is sensible to exclude any team in the Pre-Olympic Tournament. This would mean that groups could be drawn this Autumn.

The question is, why has FIBA Europe not made that decision. They have had enough warning about the repechage to have done so. On the evidence of the Regulations published after the FIBA Europe board meeting in Warsaw in May, they failed to do so.

sorry..I think playing in the Olympics Game is quite different from playing the qualifications for European Championships. The latter involves finding venues and date to play, as it won't be a week affair. Further, playing in the Olympics Games is always an honour for everybody. Forget about football where the Olympics Games are overlooked..the "real champioship" in World Basketball is the Olympics Games..exposure, lots of countries connected and watching..

I'm not surprised Fiba could do that, they were so idiot to let and organization like Uleb to grow and become the best basketball european organization. I think things still have to be sorted out.. I still repeat..it's stupid to determine that Slovenia has to qualify for Poland if they lose (for example) versus Puerto Rico... If I was a president of andy european federation I would ask not to get through the qualifications stage..

Well if I was head of the BBF I'd request an initial Division A draw be made. The bulk of the teams playing in Div A in '08 are already known and for all we know all four European sides in the World repechage could make it to Beijing! An initial draw would give federations the chance to make most of their arrangements for next year!

First of all only 3 teams qualify from the World repechage and secondly BBF already know the date line for qualifiers so they is nothing stopping them from preparing for next year.

The only unknown for the moment is who is playing who and how many teams will actually take part.

As the Women's competition has not taken place yet we all just have to be a little bit more patient .

Teams for division a next year barring olympic qualifiers*

GB
GREECE*
ISRAEL
BULGARIA
FINLAND
PORTUGAL
MACEDONIA
BOSNIA
CZECH REPUBLIC
FRANCE
BELGIUM
HUNGARY
CROATIA*
ESTONIA
LATVIA
GERMANY*
SLOVENIA*
TURKEY
SERBIA

Ideally i would like the 3 out of the 4 teams trying to qualify for the olympics, to actually do so. You know we will face a east european team or 2. is the draw seeded or pot luck? it must be seeded or you could get a group of Greece, Croatia, germany, & Slovenia for example. if seeded i think it will be something like this.

1ST SEEDS

GREECE
CROATIA
SOVENIA
GERMANY
FRANCE
CZECH REPUBLIC

2ND SEEDS

TURKEY
ITALY
PORTUGAL
ISRAEL
LATVIA
SERBIA

3RD/4TH SEEDS

GB
BELGIUM
BOSNIA
BULGARIA
ESTONIA
MACEDONIA
FINLAND
UKRAINE
HUNGARY

I hope our group will be something like this

GB
CROATIA
CZECH REPUBLIC
PORTUGAL
HUNGARY (Depending if we are in a group of 5)

What i don't want is something like this

GB
FRANCE
ITALY
BOSNIA

I reckon we'll get only get two of the four European repechage teams to Beijing(with Canada being the third repechage qualifier)

Best case scenario using these seedings:

4 team:

Czech Republic
Portugal
GB
Macedonia
Throw in Finland if we go five team

Worst case scenario:

France
Italy
GB
Estonia
Throw in Ukraine if we go five team

I do think Fiba have a problem organising this event. There are many problems to over come.

Tournament format

21 teams - 4 groups of 4, 1 group of 5?

20 teams - 5 groups of 4?

19 teams - 3 groups of 5, 1 group of 4?

18 teams - 2 groups of 4, 2 groups of 5?

Who will qualify?

21 teams - 5 group winners + 7 best runners up?

20 teams - 5 group winners + 6 best runners up?

19 teams - 4 group winners + 6 best runners up?

18 teams - 4 group winners + 5 best runners up?

This should be the format. There is no way Fiba can allow an additional qualifying tournament seeing as some teams will be playing in the Olympic qualifying tournament aswell.

All teams should be in the draw otherwise teams will be punished as we will not know what teams to scout, make travel arrangements, etc.
Infact as i am typing this it should be this way & no other way. What do you think?
The only sticking point is they may have to cho & change the groups slightly according to the Olympic qualifying groups.

What is least & greatest amount of games you can play in the Olympic qualifying tournament?
