21 NOV DIFFERENT CROWD BUT STILL LOVE IT Tuesday week, I was sitting on a press table in front of 2,000 Guildford fans, watching and reporting as the Heat went down to a superior DKV Joventut Badalona team. Featuring future NBA player, Ricky Rubio, former Toronto Raptor, Jerome Moiso, Spanish international, Rudy Fernandez among others. The weekend ended with me watching Worthing Thunder beat West Anglia Fury at home in the League on Saturday and topping Sheffield Arrows in the National Trophy away on Sunday in front of a combined crowd of about 250 people, at a guess. Watching Guildford against a top European powerhouse in a freezing ice rink was a great experience but, crazy as it sounds. Watching my beloved Thunder on the back row with the lads (I have to include Dan Midgley here) and driving to Sheffield with Thunder's director, cameraman and match night announcer was my buzz of the week. Me getting drunk after Saturday's game was another buzz just for the record. I feel that this may be Thunder's toughest season defending the League title. We were pushed to the limit at Derby, the League game at home to Taunton was close game at points of the game (despite having 7 players with our ass coach suited up) and West Anglia giving us a right scare in the first quarter, going up by eleven at the end of the first quarter. We have a weekend of away games this weekend, first being at Bristol who will be a test for us and will look to give us our first defeat of the season. They have a big squad but the guys will know what to do but it won't be easy - add this to the fact that we will be without Pat Bates and Danny Hildreth. Midge should be available but not 100% sure at the moment. .. Sunday we are away to London Leopards in the National Cup. Should be another stern test as London have improved their squad vastly since the last meeting in late October and will look for revenge. It will be a tough weekend but I'm confident, the guys can get the job done but they will need to up their game for sure. There will be a small crowd of Thunder fans at Bristol, me obviously included and a bigger number for the Leopards game, at the moment, alot of interest has been gathered for the Leopards game.. Next week will be the start to our BBL Trophy campaign against London Capital at the Thunderdome. Capital have adjusted to life in the BBL and are more then holding their own and with 6'10 shooter Sam Bradley and North Carolina's Wes Miller loading Capital's scoring, no doubt it'll be a big task for us but the main thing is the players, including our Americans get good experience in this competition and playing against teams in Britain's top League. As some Badaball readers will already know, I will be looking forward to our games with Guildford. It'll be weird actually going to the Spectrum as a fan and not a neutral spending most his time writing. You Heat fans think Scorcher might have a bullseye on his chest when Thunder visit - we'll see?? Bring the weekend on already. I might not be getting drunk but a weekend dose of the usual is more than enough for me. Bristol and Ware.. Thunder are coming and I'll be sober, what is this world coming to? 14 DEC THUNDER FLASH BACKS It's been a while since I've done this, and it feels like I say that in every blog I do but it's true right? Anyway, things have been happening and I've been kept busy. Worthing are going well in the EBL, eventhough we lost on the 1st December to a now proven BBL side in the shape of London Capital in the BBL Trophy. We held our own and with 3 minutes left in the match, were only down by four, 76-80. The Worthing Leisure Centre - nicknamed "The Thunderdome" was rocking with a great Worthing following and we, the fans were treated to the best home game of the season by a mile, eventhough we came up short. Some fans were talking about how good the atmosphere was and how well the team played with higher league opposition. For those who don't really follow the EBL much, let me give you a rundown from the fans point of view. The league, like the BBL last year is formed of ten teams but unfortunately, only three of those teams made a splash in last two years and it looks as though they will continue to do so. Ourselves, (Worthing), Reading and Manchester are normally amongst the top three and last year, all three teams were finalists with Worthing the only team playing in all three finals. It's a shame but while a few teams do compete, half the teams in the league don't have the skill to compete and as often the case at The Thunderdome, we end up seeing boring blowouts of about 25-35 points and some people at Worthing see that as the reason behind the drop in crowd numbers Eventhough we can't afford the BBL from what we've been told, what us Worthing fans witnessed on that Saturday, we'd be witnessing more or less every week if we were in the BBL and I'd love to see that but I can see why the directors don't want us in the BBL, reasons that I don't want to delve too much into. Let's just hope that things can only get better for Worthing Thunder and not continue to stay in limbo. Back to EBL business the next Saturday, 8/12/07 and our arch rivals, Reading Rockets in the National Cup semi final. Now normally Reading vs Worthing is always a classic encounter that brings out the best in both sets of players and in most eyes, the best two sets of fans in the league but this past Saturday was different. Worthing really eased their way to the win 86-78. The only reason the match was closer than thought was because the three referees were terrible. I've never seen such one sided reffing but the main thing is we got the win and as a result, are through to the final. ULEB Cup reviews and the game report of Guildford Heat's latest game against KK Bosna are up. Guildford are flying the flag for Britain, and despite being 0-6, are still putting up good contests. Also, if you haven't already bought tickets to Brian Dux's benefit game on December 28th, what are you waiting for? Even if you can't attend, perchase the tickets via the Guildford Heat website and help towards the Brian Dux fund. Looking forward to watching Newcastle Eagles and Scottish Rocks in Crawley tomorrow but my mind will mainly be on Thunder vs Magic, 1st v 2nd later in the evening. Let's do this!! |
