Westminster Warriors and Lambeth Lakers are both joining EBL4. Can anyone tell me how strong they are and how people think they'll get on? |

On paper it's a step up, although both teams will play in EB Senior leagues as well as the LMBL, usually with most of the same players....Omega, Westside etc. White Heat are a bit of an exception as a number of their key players are HCCA guys who play for HCCA in the LMBL and White Heat in EB Div 3 (hence White Heat being at the wrong end of the LMBL Prem Div). Westside are another EB 3 team that perhaps tries to take on too much (EB 3, LMBL and Middlesex League) and might be a lot more successful if they concentrated on just one comp. At the risk of stating the obvious, the success of Lambeth and Westminster will depend on recruitment and their organisational set-up. If you don't do either well, you'll end up like Omega!! The top end of the LMBL is as good as (if not better than) EB Div 3 and 4 anyway so I expect they'll be ok. Westminster will be in the LMBL Prem Div next season. I suppose in terms of actual level of play,it's more of a sideways move but demonstrates an aspiration to move to a higher level. |

The LMBL held its Finals Day and AGM last Sunday, results as follows: Men's Cup Final..... MacPro 84 v 77 HCCA OT (71/71) HCCA just failed to make it a Premier League and Cup Double falling to an overtime defeat to MacPro. Credit to MacPro who twice came back from 10pts behind and stayed in the match thanks to the quality of their 3pt shooting (27pts in treys in te match). HCCA had 2 shots from the line with 1.2sec left in the match to win but could only convert 1 to take the tie into OT. Infact, poor shooting form the line really cost HCCA as they could only convert 9/18.MacPro took the lead with less than 2mins of OT remaining. With HCCA having to foul and send MacPro to the line to regain possession, Macpro's MVP Messir (25pts) held his nerve to close out the match. HCCA ended up with a 22/1 record in all LMBL comps. Women's Cup Final......Wandsworth Sting made it a perfect season beating Eastside Heat by around 15pts. Eastside put up a great battle but Wandsworth pulled away in the final stanza to make it an unbeaten league and cup double. Men's Plate Final......Met Trident 2 (Div 2 Champs) pulled off the second shock of the day beating Div 1 Champs Westminster Warriors in a tight match that went down to the final play. Ladi Brown came up with a massive block on the 3pt buzzer beating attempt to close out the match despite a big Westminster comeback led by veteran BBL star Junior Williams. |

The LMBL held its Finals day last Sunday (1/6/08) with London Cups (Men and Women) and Men's Plate up for grabs. In the Men's Cup, HCCA came from 21pts down to beat White Heat 96/87. This was HCCA's first Cup win in 6 attempts having lost in O/T last year and to White Heat back in 2005. Haringay Angels made it a perfect season winning the Women's Cup to add to their Premier League title unbeaten. Sources tell me thatAngels put in a below-par performance (by their standards) in beating Eastside Heat. In the Men's Premier League, ex-pat Aussie/Kiwi outfit Rocco's Raiders took the title for the first time going unbeaten 18/0, their only loss all season being in the Cup v Euston Power. HCCA finished runners-up (18/4) with National Founders Cup Winners Lithuanian BC in 3rd place 5 games back from Rocco's. 2006 Champs Camden Knights and Hoxton Heat were relegated to Div 1. I think age is catching up with them both!! Once again, thanks to the LMBL Committee (Roger Bacchus, Courtney Carter and John Leitizia) for all their hard work in running the biggest and best regional league in the UK. |

Yes , in the Mens Final , a very controlled and confident comeback by HCCA who had plenty of depth on their bench . White Heat got a bit distracted and their lack of a bench told as the game went into the second half . In the womens game Eastside showed up without the influential Patsy Imbert and Haringey Angels were able to win but without the sparkle that they showed earlier in the season . Ex Lee Valley Juniors Abi Osunsami with 5 ; Emma Omo-bare with 12 and Hannah O'Milegan with 11 the main scorers for Eastside . For the Angels , Tamique Weekes with 13 , Ziana Bofenda 12 and Krystal Charles with 16 . A very well manged day and a successful season for the LMBL . |

The London Metropolitan Basketball League (the UK's largest regional league) held its Finals Day yesterday. HCCA regained the Men's Premier League title going 15/3 and taking the title from last year's champions Rocco's Raiders (14/4) who HCCA beat twice during the season. However, Rocco's got a measure of revenge yesterday denying HCCA to do the League/Cup "double" with a thrilling 68/66 win. HCCA were the Cup holders. To my knowledge no Men's team has ever managed to do the double. Haringey Angels did achieve the League/Cup double with a 10pt win over Eastside Heat. Eastside were wiothout two key players on London Police basketball duty. Lewisham Thunder beat Camden Knights to win the Men's Plate for the first time. Once again, many thanks to Roger Bacchus, Courtney Carter and John Letizia for all their sterling work in getting over 50 teams in 4 divisions and 3 Cup competitions playing and completing the season successfully.
