I've looked at the website for the Gran Canaria Basketball Academy, which appears extremely impressive, and I would certainly seriously consider letting my son attend one of the weekly courses to see what it is like.

It does appear expensive, however if I work out the cost of all the basketball training for my son, the petrol bill for the endless miles I travel transporting him there, together with the ever growing food bill, it doesn't seem too bad, particularly if you're getting first class education both on and off the court.

I would presume that the academy would be predominantly looking to accept players who they could develop into career players, rather than just taking anybodys money, knowing that the boy was never going to succed. Or at least I would hope that is the case.

Two of the above comments appear to contradict each other. How does Ryan Richards etc attend the Academy if it doesn't open until Setember 2007?

Any other info welcome.

They don't

They play for Gran Canaria Basketball Club which is completely separate from the Academy

The people behind the academy are the reason why Ryan Richards, Ashley Hamilton and others were in Gran Canaria in the first place. I believe, but stand to be corrected, that both are returning to Gran Canaria next season, but as part of the Academy not the Gran Canaria club.

The Academy is connected to a smaller club (Aquimes) and will run its own U20 team.

I have visited and the concept and set-up looks good. As its a new venture there is obviously a risk (and there isn't when going to the US?) but I am sure that players will be given every opportunity to reach their potential. As for cost its a lot cheaper than sending a player to the US, and you get a full season to develop not just a few months.

The players that I saw were all international squad standard, and if players that are rumoured to be going do attend the standard will be high.

You are right Trevor. The only reason Ashley went to Gran Canaria was because of Rob. Commencing September, Ashley, Ryan et al will be at the Academy not at the club

Finishes off with 8 points and 9 rebounds on a poor 25% field goal percentage and 50% free throw percentage. 1 block in there aswell in under 20 minutes. Encouraging to see him doing pretty well agaisnt NBA opposition. Leading rebounder fo Estudiantes aswell.

Has not done himself any harm guarding Gasol for a time. Is always a good rebounder do not forget he was the leading rebounder in 06 Hoop Summit.
If he was his normal shelf from the line could have had a double double
Lets hope he starts to increase the ACB minutes.

Dan is doing ok, he has played 11 games averaging about 15 minutes a game. Averaging just over 4 points and 4 rebounds per game.

Now Gran Canaria has run for the year what do people think? A couple of the boys from Manchester are considering it for next year. Who`s moving on and were are they going? Who`s staying? Has it done what people expected it too for their boys. Anyone dissatisfied? Obviously any feedback may help inform our boys (n parents) choices.
A bit rusty and knackered but still impressive for her age!

Very happy with things. Tim Lewis leaving was a bit of a scare but apart from that it has been a very positive experience.

Obviously Menelik can give a view on things but if any parents want to discuss things with a parent they can contact me. If you don't have my contact details Joe has them.

With estudiantes loosing again looks like to loan has been a good move for Dan.
Intresting to see whathe does next season his loan is up at end of season.
He played a major role in winning the Princes Cup beating league leaders Zaragosa and Alicante and looks like he is a big factor coming up to the Play-Offs
