My brother (Animal for those who don't know) saw it last night and swears up and down it's better than 300 and possibly the best action movie ever. |

I'd definitely call it one of the best movies I've seen in awhile...ranks right up there near the Departed among my favorite movies of the last few years... Q, you seen it yet? |

Just saw it. FANTASTIC! The best action movie i have ever seen. This movie hit on all cylanders. Once I was done, I wanted to watch it again. AND To make things better! On May 30, 2007, Dreamworks greenlit two sequels to Transformers,[103] and Shia LaBeouf,[104] Megan Fox[105] and Peter Cullen[39] signed on to return. Producer Tom DeSanto has envisioned a storyline introducing the Dinobots, the Constructicons, and Soundwave.[15] Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman may not return, as "Star Trek... is taking up kind of all of our time."[26] Michael Bay has not signed on, "trying to keep some leverage for the negotiations",[39] but already has ideas, including an aircraft carrier character.[106] |

That aircraft carrier character sounds fucking sweet, and I'm intrigued as to what vehicle they choose for Soundwave. Hopefully we'll get to see the return of Megatron, because as Sandman said, we still haven't seen the epic battle between him and Optimus. What's the point of including the Constructicons? Devastator was already killed... |

Personally, I'm more psyched about the Dinobots. But yeah, the aircraft carrier does sound tight. |

I really want to see some character development from the Deceptiocns in this sequel. Obviously Starscream will have a huge part, probably even bigger then Megatron's part in the first, but I want to see more from Barricade, the two new guys (Soundwave and the aircraft carrier) and even Scorpinok. |

Well, I finally saw this last night and was well pleased with it. Somewhere between Jen's boyfriend at one end with hatred and "best action movie of all time" at the other extreme is where I fall with this thing. I thought the action was great. "Best action film ever" is something I just can't sign off on because that's too tall of an order and I've seen so many action films of differing kinds over the years. I will say this: This movie left an impression that I'm not going to forget anytime soon. There were several times where my eyes involuntarily bugged out because I was seeing something incredible on the screen. I had a blast in the theater. The crowd was hot and the movie delivered the goods. That always helps. It's a Micheal Bay film. The Rock. Con-Air. Armageddon. Stuff like that. ^^ That right away should set you up for what you know you're going to see: Not Shakespeare on the plot and writing but everything visceral is taken to the moon and then some. A guy can flip a coin in a Bay film and it's treated in slow mo like it's an orbiting Star Destroyer about to take out a galaxy or the planet Jupiter in 2001: A Space Odyssey. ^^ - That's Micheal Bay. If you can in with those kinds of realistic expectations and you like that stuff, I don't see where you can go wrong with this. I think this, Die Hard 4, and Ratouille win the summer outright in my book, for obviously completely different reasons. This was the big action film spectacle blowout film. Die Hard 4 was the straight up, old school, meat and potatoes action film. DH4 and this couldn't be more different from each other even though they are both "action films." Ratoutille (sp) obviously is the fun for all family film that I think has something for everyone. That may even be Pixar's best film outright so far, and that's saying something. Sure, as a long time TF fan from day one, if I wanted to be anal and nitpicky...there's some things I wouldn't have minded seeing, like Crim's mentioning of some more character development and the rest of it, but the fact that two sequels are already greenlighted tells me that, for the flaws that this film had (and yes it has some)....if they're setting up for a series anyways...you can look at this film as an excellent prologue/setup film for everything else to come, which is fine by me. God knows this a worlds better "episode 1" than Phantom Menace was for those terrible Star Wars prequels that don't even exist to me and don't deserve the name Star Wars in their titles. Oh yes...I went there. ;) I would have preferred to see some TF's keep their original forms like Megatron as a gun and so on, but you know what? I can live with it if they're going to keep putting out product like this and probably improve on any of the shortcomings. Give us a heftier script for the next film with some more character development, less focus on the humans, and more from the TF's perspective of things, expand past Earth a little bit, and I think you can just keep on going. I can live with Soundwave not being a tape recorder as long as he has that amazing voice that only Frank Welker can do and so on. Sure, if I really want to be an anal fanboy, I can come up with a laundry list of really anal nitpicks, but why? This isn't the 1980's cartoons and it's not trying to be and it's not supposed to be. This is a new vision and a new start. Here's where I think some fans are having a problem: You grow up and you have this imagination and personal vision of what you'd like to see and where you felt things could and should go...and then something like this comes along and it simply isn't YOUR personal vision. Well, that's as true for me as anyone else, but they succeeded in delivering their vision and I'm on board for the ride. I remember how I felt after I saw Fellowship of the Ring in the theater. I walked out and I knew I'd seen a high quality production but I didn't care for the darker and obviously more horror movie bent that Peter Jackson had brought to it vs. what my imagination from reading LOTR had been. I liked it but I didn't love it. I also had a strong loyalty to my years' of personal imagination about what the LOTR universe was supposed to look like and it didn't agree with Peter Jackson in a lot of ways. It still doesn't. In the end, and taken as total, Peter Jackson made his vision work and I love those films taken together. I certainly don't put this Transformers film anywhere near the lofty status of the LOTR films, but the same concept does apply. It's something new, like Batman Begins was. You press the reset button and take a new angle at the thing and I think they're off to a good start. :) I do think that this movie will probably fare even better on DVD and Blu-Ray (this will be shock and awe in high def for the holidays) especially if there's a director's cut like I'm expecting there to be. The film's biggest weakness? The CGI. Let me explain why: 5 years ago, this film couldn't have even been made. They certainly keep making big time strides with it. I still don't believe CGI can or should carry a film outright. That being said: It certainly looks cool what they did and you really couldn't ask for much more. It doesn't look real (it's not supposed to) but it does look very cool. But here's the pitfall: I personally would have opted to have Pixar make the film instead of trying to go for the mixed real life/CGI route. I've seen plenty of scenes in Pixar films that tell me they could make an amazingly slick Transformers film. Think about Monsters, Inc. Remember the scene near the climax of the film where they're chasing through a bunch of doors on conveyor belts? Remember how slick and uber technical that looked? Hell, Cybertron itself could look something like parts of that. There were scenes in the Incredibles and some other spots...aw hell, Pixar can do anything you want. They are the best. I would have gone to them and said: "Listen, this isn't going to be 1984 cartoon revisited. We're shooting for something that's at least a PG rating, possibly PG13, it's not for little kids, we need something slick, bad ass, and with a little bit of an edge and attitude, leaning towards the dark side a touch." I guarantee you Pixar would have made a shock and awe product for the ages off of that. I wish they'd done that instead. With that in place, you literally can make any story you want with no limits. This also would have given them more time with the script. In the end, I think it would have been at LEAST a 4/5 star film on the action scene vs. the 3.5 I'm giving it. Maybe they'll get a chance someday, who knows? My point is: If they had gone that route, then there literally is no limit to what your story and script can be vs. what they did here. In this TF movie, the script was limited by the use of real life, real humans, and imposing CGI into that vs. going the Pixar route. Personally to me, it shows. There's too many movies I've seen where it's obvious they run into what I call "the CGI brick wall." That being said, they really pulled it all off better than I would have expected. This is the closest we've seen yet to a "live" cartoon for all intents and purposes. Anyways, The Q is well pleased. I give this a good 3.5/5 stars. :) |

I agree with Q for the most part. The reason why alot of people hate it is because they had so much expectation going into it... that it didt live up to those standards. I will not agree it's better than 300. 300 was ahead of its time. Looked awesome.. had character development, and was funny as hell. I will also disagree that it is the best action movie off all time. I would pick any of the Die hards over this movie. Because that Action is a real person going through it. Not some CGI robots... who I admit did look cool... but that was about it. I may not have given this movie a fair shot. It was 11:15 at night... the theaatre was jammed packed with people. And I was hungry and hot. So maybe my mood spoiled it. For me it all depends when it comes out on DVD and I watch it in the comforts of my own home. It was a good action movie... but it wasent a good TF movie. But thats just my opinion |

Ya see, to me, 300 and TF are also two very different movies entirely. 300 is just...unique.
Agreed, although this certainly had my pulse pounding!
I guarantee you that you'll like it better if you see it when you're feeling good. :)
The old time loyalist in me probably agrees with me, but overall, it was a positive experience and I think they can build on something here. I hope you can see it again soon and under better conditions. :) |

I always make it a point to reset my brain before I go in. With Batman Begins, I read up on it and they basically told me what the plot is..."this is where we are starting"....and I accepted it, and enjoyed the hell out of it. Same with Transformers, I reaqd up on it, realized "this is how we are doing it" and took it for what it is worth, and enjoyed the hell out of it. As for why Megatron didn't turn into a gun.... they said the thought of the baddest villain in the movie having to have someone shoot him to do damage didn't make sense. As they said, it would be like Darth Vadar morphing into a light saber, and having to have a storm trooper wave him around. Also Hasbro, said they would not under any circumstances create a transformer gun. |
