After the greatness that was Batman Begins last summer and the impending debut of Superman Returns, I've been wondering quite a bit what we'll see in the Batman Begins Sequel, slated for a 2008 release. In other words, plotlines and actors who will be added/deleted from the cast...... I've read at Batman-On-Film that director Christopher Nolan and writer David S. Goyer already have a general story in place, and are just ironing out the actual screenplay. They are scheduled to begin filming in early-2007, and apparently Warner Bros. has really given Nolan the ball to run as far as he chooses with it creatively. The Joker is expected to play a role in the film, as hinted at by the final scene in Begins. They are currently in the process of working out who will play the character, as well as the character of new Gotham City D.A. Harvey Dent. The main Joker candidates being tossed around, as reported by BOF (which is the most reliable Batman source on the 'net), are Jude Law, Hugo Weaving (The Matrix trilogy, Lord of the Rings trilogy, V for Vendetta), Lachy Hulme and Paul Bettany. Everyone knows who Law is, most know Weaving from his role as Agent Smith in The Matrix, and Bettany is in The DaVinci Code. Hulme Pictured HERE is fairly unknown, but is a real darkhorse candidate that evidently has the attention of the powers-that-be. And from the picture in the link above, I think he at least has the look, as well as the height. Bettany Pictured HERE may be able to pull off the look, and has played evil characters more than once before, but is apparently a longshot candidate among the others despite having some sort of backing from the fanbase. Although Law is a "name" guy, I can't recall seeing enough of his work to judge if I think he can pull this role off..... Weaving could certainly pull off the madness that is The Joker, and has the unique facial characteristics and lanky physical frame that embody the character in the comics..... So, who do you guys believe should get the role out of those four? Or do you think someone else should play it? They're talking Josh Lucas Pictured HERE for Harvey Dent. Apparently the studio is interested in him, and he's said straight-out in multiple interviews that he WANTS the role. He's in Poseidon of course, and in addition to the countless other films on his resume, he's worked with Christian Bale before in American Psycho (2000). The guy looks like he could play Dent to me. The idea for the character, right off the bat anyway, would be that he and Bruce Wayne are friends of course, in addition to him working closely with Batman and the soon-to-be Commissioner Gordon in their efforts to clean up Gotham City. With that in mind, he and Bale are close in age and have proven chemistry from American Psycho. Again, comments/suggestions for Dent? Another issue is whether or not Katie Holmes will be brought back as Assistant District Attorney Rachel Dawes. I know some were critical of her performance in Begins, though I felt like she played her role fairly well, but the studio's apparent snag at the moment is what her character's story arc would be for this sequel and the next - if she were to last that long. I think they need to bring her back. I don't like loose ends. They need to do what they have to do in the next film to get rid of her if they have nothing for her beyond that, either by her leaving Gotham or, as I've seen rumored all over the place, getting murdered by The Joker. Anyway guys, chip in. I haven't met anyone yet who disliked Begins, and I know Q and Snow both said in the Begins review how much they liked it. So chime in! |

I say give her an overdose of Bale's pore-cleaning gel, that's the best way to go. Not the alcohol based stuff The Joker uses ;) |

You have to take care of your body dammit. A two-hour full-body workout in the morning, followed by a hot shower with a deep-penetrating scalp conditioner and a non-alcoholic pore-cleansing gel. After 15-20 minutes, the gel has formed a mask which can be removed. It keeps the skin fresh, whereas alcohol dries it out.... |

I can't wait for this movie. I'm about as big of a Batman Begins fan as you're likely to find. As far as the Joker goes...As long as it's someone who can do it well, like all the other GREAT casting decisions they've made thus far in this series...I have no worries. Stray idea: Mark Hammil (Yes, Luke Skywalker) is the one who's done all that great voicwork for the Batman cartoons for years, especially as the Joker. I'd halfway consider having him do voiceover work again, if nothing else. |

Hopefully it follows suit of the Spider-Man sequel, and by that I mean is just as good as the first. Because the first one was excellent. Always liked the Joker, even when I never liked Batman too much (I like the darkness that Begins brings with it, it's not cartoonish like the ones I dislike). If Hugo is in contention, then he gets my vote. Didn't care much for V For Vendetta, but like I said in the review, Hugo had an interesting character and played it well, you just couldn't get into it. Hugo as Joker, I think, would be gold and porbably the best way to go. Of course anyone but Jude Law, he was alright in Sky Captain, but I think of anything else he was in that I liked. |

Apparently, Weaving and Hulme are the two front-runners.......... I'm I the only one who'd like to see Cillian Murphy return, if only even in a small role, as The Scarecrow? I thought he was excellent in Begins, and he could play a role, at least early in the next film.... |

Agreed 100 percent. Not a big Jude Law fan, really. Hugo Weaving could be a downright scary and sinister Joker, which is what I would expect them to lean more towards with this series of films. He gets my vote. |

Weaving has my vote....that sadistic smile he has, that's got joker written all over it. Not to mention, the fact that if they were smart, Joker would not be out right defeated in this one. He would continue through the sequels like the big fish that keeps getting away. Have the other villains fall, but Joker escapes....until the final movie. |

I read at BOF that Nolan and Goyer want this next film to be even darker than Begins, with The Joker of course being murderous and mad, and the descent into Two-Face by Dent. So, it looks like they're taking the popular approach. We're not getting comical Joker, we're getting the insane supercriminal....... |

Awesome news. The darker the better. Looking forward to seeing The Joker (hopefully played by Hugo) the way he ought to be. |

Another possibility for Dent/Two-Face, from what I understand, is Liev Schreiber (Scream, The Manchrian Candidate). He doesn't look like he'd be too bad of a fit...... But again, it's all how one inhabits the role..... |

I like Hugo Weaving for the role of the Joker...he did really well in his role as Agent Smith, so I'd really enjoy seeing him try out perhaps the most entertaining villianous character in comics... I would like to Cillian Murphyback in some way, as well... As for Dent...Josh Lucas sounds good to me...I'm a fan... |

Well, we were all wrong. Heath Ledger has been chosen to be the joker. He has the wicked smile, but I just dont know if he could be sinister enough to play the joker. I will give him a chance, but I would have prefered Weaving. |

Weaving is just supervillain incarnate, so he would no doubt have been good. Ledger, though he's been in a lot of movies I didn't care for, is a good actor and he has the facial profile and smile for the part. The question, as always with these characters, is if he can truly inhabit the role. Another plus early on is that he's around the same age as Bale, and I know it was important to the powers-that-be that Batman/Bruce Wayne, Joker and Harvey Dent all be the same age roughly. |

I always thought Matthew McConaughey could pull off Dent really well. He has that suave kinda charm, which is needed for the fans to like him in the next one, we know he can play an attorney, and he can pull off the twisted part of dent and make the fans hate him. And he's in the same age range as Baile. |

Ledger huh? Interesting... I have my doubts, but these folks have done nothing but score gold thus far, so we shall see... Speaking of McConaughey...if you want to see him and Christian Bale together doing some surprisingly good acting...see Reign of Fire one time. It's worth it just to watch these two cut it up. I would have really liked to have seen those two reunited on this project. You'll understand for sure after you've seen them together in RoF. |

I like McConaughey, I could dig him as Dent. I really can't wait for this movie, eventhough it's not set to be out until 2008. After seeing Superman Returns several times and loving it, then watching Batman Begins again since and realizing that it is truly THE superhero movie at this point, my anticipation is just sky-high for this one. |

He would've made a better one than Heath Ledger, that's for damn sure. I'm not completely sold on Ledger yet, just because I don't think he's good enough to pull it off, but for now I'll just trust Nolan's decision. Looking forward to The Dark Knight, though not all that much seeing as how it'll be out in 2008 ;) |
