New episodes of SG-1 and Atlantis begin Friday, which means they'll be taped for sure (as SmackDown might be too.)

I think Atlantis ended with the crew on a hive ship trying to blow it up, so I look forward to seeing the conclusion to that. Should be good.

SG-1 ended with Earth being attacked by the Ori via a plague. And the plague wasn't contained like it usually is, so it's spreading all over everywhere.

Should be a quality night of programming this Friday on the Sci-Fi channel.

I need to break down and start watching these. Since I don't bother watching SD anymore...on the occasions I'm home...sounds great!

BTW, you all need to buy Firefly and Serenity on DVD right now! Awesome sci-fi!

The future of Stargate is in question today, as SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running Stargate SG-1, Multichannel News reported today and a GateWorld source has confirmed. The news regrettably follows the airing of the show's milestone two-hundredth episode on Friday.

Stargate Atlantis, meanwhile, has been renewed for a fourth season, with the network hoping to see that the spin-off series can stand alone, according to a source.

SG-1 has struggled in the ratings all summer, with the record-breaking tenth season premiering with a 1.4 household rating -- down more than 20 percent from last season's average. After a brief climb to a 1.6 in its second week, the show fell to a 1.3 in week four.

Viewers and production personnel alike have blamed a number of factors for the show's dramatically lower ratings, from SCI FI and Sony's lack of promotion to the removal of anchor show Battlestar Galactica from the Friday night line-up, to new competition from such shows as USA's hit Monk.

Though also down significantly in the ratings this summer, Atlantis has consistently scored better than SG-1.

"Studio executives are working to identify an alternative outlet for Stargate SG-1," Multichannel News said, citing sources close to the production.

Stargate SG-1 premiered on Showtime in the United States in July, 1997, where it aired for five years before the pay cable network cancelled it. In 2002 MGM brokered a deal to continue production and move the show to SCI FI Channel, where it became the cable channel's biggest hit and aired ten times per week in reruns.

In addition to holding the record for the longest-running science fiction series ever produced in North America, the series is largely responsible for making SCI FI a Top 10 cable network. Though the writers intended to end the show several times, its larger, newfound audience on basic cable rejuvinated the series, extending its life far beyond the average science fiction series.

Series lead Richard Dean Anderson left the show in 2004, to be replaced by Ben Browder and Beau Bridges when the show relaunched in a new creative direction in Season Nine. Ratings remained strong, though no longer at their historic peak. The show's producers had even intended to rebrand the show Stargate Command, but SCI FI ultimately opted to stick with the established SG-1 name.

Ironically, this is the first year since Season Four that plans were already in place, both creatively and in signed actor contracts, for another year. The show has lived on year-to-year since moving to SCI FI, with the writers forced to write a possible series finale every year -- only to find the show renewed once again.

Following the September 22 mid-season finale, SCI FI Channel intends to air the final 10 episodes of Stargate SG-1 beginning in March, 2007, a source confirmed to GateWorld.

What is to come? Both the producers and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have expressed a desire to continue the hit franchise with not just Stargate Atlantis, but something new in the future -- be it an SG-1 feature film or TV mini-series, or a third television show. The benefits of a simultaneous dual production in Vancouver, with two projects sharing producers, writers, and crew members, are tremendous for the studio. And Stargate is owner MGM's flagship television property, having recently been compared to its venerable "James Bond" film franchise in importance.

MGM has a great deal invested in an expanding field of licensing, official conventions, syndication, and international TV distribution. Notable is the upcoming MMORPG video game Stargate Worlds, perhaps the franchise's largest licensed project to date, due out at the end of 2007.

Meanwhile, Stargate Atlantis will have the chance to step out of the shadow of its parent show and stand on its own two feet. Though the foundational chapter of the Stargate saga draws to a close, hope remains for the future.

An official announcement with additional details on the future of Stargate is expected this week. Stay with GateWorld for the very latest.

Stargate SG-1 airs Fridays at 9 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on SCI FI Channel in the United States.

SG-1 is better than Atlantis in every possible way. I like both show, but Atlantis being renewed and not SG-1 is bullshit. Sci-Fi doesn't have too many shows that bring in the "low" ratings that SG-1 does.

This however gives me hope.

Don't count Stargate SG-1 out just yet. Though SCI FI Channel has cancelled the long-running series (story), the show's producers are hard at work looking for a new outlet for the story to continue, executive producer Robert C. Cooper told GateWorld exclusively.

"As far as the future I can't comment yet because nothing has been confirmed," Cooper said. "What we want to emphasize is that the franchise is not dying. SG-1 will go on in some way. We're just not ready to announce how."

A formal announcement from the studio and the network is expected later this week.

Cooper also emphasizes that, though emotions are running high among Stargate fans who have just learned the news, it is important to keep the show's ratings strong throughout the remainder of its run on SCI FI. "What's most important is that fans don't take out their frustration with SCI FI by not watching," he said. "In fact, what they need to do is watch both SG-1 and Atlantis LIVE and make sure the ratings stay strong.

"That helps prove to other outlets that might be interested in SG-1 that the show is still as strong as we think it is."

Could Stargate SG-1 find its way to yet another network in 2007? Or might the SG-1 team be headed for a TV movie, mini-series, direct-to-video feature ... or the big screen? Stay with GateWorld for the latest developments.

Stargate SG-1 Season Ten continues with all-new episodes this Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern/Pacific on SCI FI, followed by Stargate Atlantis at 10 p.m.!

Another network would be wise to pick the series up. It's easily as good now as it has ever been, from a story and acting stance. I wouldn't even care what network picked it up, just as long as someone does. Hell the CW network is going to suck ass, they should pick it up, as the only decent show they'll have is SmackDown. Or Spike, it's certainly better than "Blade: The Series:".

My God, the show has been on for nearly a decade now right?

Some of these shows really should quit while they're ahead, before they run out of steam. X-Files anyone?

Yes, it's over (on Sci-Fi at least) at the end of this season (it's 10th).

However, they should've been cancelled a while back, when the show actually sucked. Season 6, most of seasons 7 and 8. They really reinvented themselves with season 9, with the Beau Bridges as the General, Ben Browder joining the team, and Claudia Black becoming a full time member of the team as well (this year anyway). They've got new badass villians, all new storylines.

The show is really on fire right now, I'd say the best it's been in a long time (it's almost like a new show, with some familiar characters).

Totally the wrong decision by Sci-Fi, at least right now, considering last weeks 200th episode got a 1.9 rating, which was higher than Atlantis got.

I agree. There were plenty of times they could've canceled the show, they chose the time where SG1 really got to rocking and basically felt like a different show. They were doing great stuff the past two seasons.

Sci-Fi is stupid, ratings dropped because they tried to fix something that wasn't broken. That being Sci-Fi Friday: Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica. That's apparent by BG also taking a hit in ratings. The three shows performed well off of one another, there was no reason to separate them.

Maybe, just maybe, they'll undo their mistake and bring SG1 back... Or quit being bastards who KNOW the show will still draw and be a success, by sitting on a contract and saying "you can't take the show to any other network, we have the contract".

Spoilers for the series finale of Stargate SG-1:

The last episode of SG1 won't air here in the States until May or June, but it has already aired in either Canada or the UK, so I watched it last night on Daily Motion.

A pretty damn good episode, especially the beginning. Basically, all five members of SG-1 and General Landry are aboard The Odyssey and are attacked by Ori ships. After several hits, their shields are down to zero, meaning the next hit and they are finished. So Carter activates a time dilation bubble, basically slowing everything in it down drastically. There, the team live out the next 50 years of their lives on the ship, just the six of them and then Landry dies of old age.

Carter eventually figures out a way to reverse it all, but they have to deactivate the bubble to do so. The problem is the Ori beam was already launched, so in less than a second after coming out of the dilation, the ship will explode. So Teal'c gets in a force field to reverse the process and the ship is destroyed, and they all die... for a few seconds until everything that has just happened is reversed and they're able to speed away. But because Teal'c was the one to have the shield and reverse it, he keeps the memory of the 50 years they went through and remains aged (he now has gray streaks in his hair). The show ends with SG-1 walking through the gate, showing that their adventures continue even though the show isn't.

Sounds stupid if you're reading it and haven't watched any, but it's a very cool episode. The major thing to come from it happened within the first ten minutes, and that was the Asgard telling Carter that we, the Tau'ri or Earthlings, are officially the Fifth Race (The alliance of the Four Races were Ancients, Asgard, Furlings and The Nox, we became the Fifth). The Asgard then upgraded The Odyssey with ALL of the Asgard weapons, technology, knowledge and their entire recorded history. Basically, they leave their legacy to the people of Earth, because the Asgard are about to be extinct. Their physical degeneration from thousands of years of cloning has resulted in disease, and there is nothing else they can do. They commit mass suicide after upgrading The Odyssey, by blowing up their planet. Thor, who was on the show, and the rest of the Asgard all die.

Though I have no idea if the Asgard aboard the Atlantis ship joined them or if he's still with the Atlantis crew. So there might be one left.

Very good episode though. Now SG-1 can start really getting good with the movies, since MGM wants to make 2 SG-1 movies a year, and are giving them a much bigger budget then they ever had to do the TV (and anyone who has watched the show knows Stargate always had some kickass special effects).

I suppose 10 years for a Sci-Fi show is good enough, certainly is the record.

The SERIES finale of Stargate SG-1 airs tonight, followed by the SEASON 3 finale of Stargate: Atlantis. Both of are great episodes, the Atlantis one being the better of the two.

I highly recommend all of you check these shows out tonight at 8PM EST on the Sci-Fi channel.

The only thing good about the SG1 cancellation, is MGM has given them a much bigger budget (and they already have a big one; their effects are awesome) to make their direct-to-DVD movies coming out this fall. If these two movies do well, many more will be made, possibly some being released to theaters. :)

Probably some contract issue. See the bolded item? I think you partially answered your own question. ;)

It's like, with videogames, more often than not it's you guys getting screwed and having to wait several months while we Americans get it first. Same general concept.

I have no idea about the rest of your question. I know someone who might, though. I'll forward your question to them and if I get an answer I'll post it here. :)

EDIT:

Answer from a gent I know in the UK:

From what I have heard, the SG-1 movies will play on Sci-Fi first, with a DVD release sometime in 2008.
As for the Amanda Tapping role in Atlantis, this might have something to do with contract on SG-1, the same going for Christopher Judge.
