I first became a fan after watching him in the Musketeers. I was very young and remember the death of Roy Kinnear, so I watched the film one day at home and became hooked. I love movies and at the end wrote down the name of the actor who for me stole the movie. When I went to the local library (no internet in the 80's! ) the librarian was a bit stunned when I asked for all the books she had on Oliver Reed. I read his auto-biography and have been a fan ever since, how about you?

Ok....I'm going to show my age here...!! I was taken to the cinema to see "Oliver!"....I was VERY small, honest! No multiscreens in those days just one big screen and I remember being scared witless by this big but mesmeric monster called Bill Sykes.... Of course later came the likes of the Musketeer films and Hannibal Brooks and I was just captivated by that voice...and those slightly hooded eyes. One of those people you feel you just have to sit up and take notice of whatever he says and does.... |

You know something MDW, I have never seen Oliver in Oliver! Must see it as I hear it is one of his best roles. I saw the Oliver by Roman Poloanski last year and thought that Ben Kingsley was superb, but from what I hear Oliver Reed as Sykes was one of the best portrayals yet. |

I have never seen the later version of Oliver - to be honest I found the whole story a bit boring - but Ben Kingsley would have to turn in the performance of a life-time to beat Oliver Reed in that role. I first became a fan of his when I was about 15 or so through his appearances on Saturday night TV, not his pretend drunken appearances but being the real Ollie. He still managed to upset a lot of people by saying Glenda Jackson had a nice pair of T**** but he was very very funny, interesting and amazing presance even on the TV. From then I watched all of his films I could and read a few books. I've also read a few bits in the papers which while not always truthful were at least interesting. Basically he made life interesting.

Told you I hadn't seen it. Sorry - I assumed from your post they played the same role.

It started with Curse of the Werewolf, then Paranoiac. I am a huge Hammer fan. At the time I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was just something about him that caught my attention from the very beginning. Now I know it was just his incredible charisma. I don't become such an avid fan of particular actors as a habit (the only exceptions being perhaps Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee...), but I just thought, this guy is really interesting. Everything about the way he spoke and the way he delivered his lines...His looks didn't hurt either;) Before I knew it I was collecting every movie I could get my hands on...:) Emily |

I became a huge Oliver Reed fan after seeing his performance as the delightfully creepy Dr. Hal Raglan in David Cronenberg's The Brood. I liked how the character starts out as the villain but turns out to be just misunderstood in the end and tries to help Frank and Candice. Just watched Ollie in Burnt Offerings the other night and I was online looking up trivia about him when I stumbled on this forum. |

I became an instant fan while watching The Great Scout and Cathouse Thursday. Lee Marvin was the star but Oliver Reed was so strong he kept my attention. He just has something about him that makes him bigger than the roles he plays. It was the same in the Musketeer movies too, he was simply overpowering in the part. |

I agree, Oliver had this ability to outact the lead men and that is really a great tribute to any actor or actress. Not many have that abilty but Reed certainly did, best example...Gladiator. |
