I only have my G1, which isn't a full license. I'll be able to apply for G2 testing soon (which you have to wait a year for after getting G1)

Yeah on the road, but I had to be with an adult while driving and I could drive alone at 16.

Is the age that different in other countries? In Canada you can get your G1 as soon as you turn 16 (so you can drive, but with a person with 4 years driving experience and a full G license). 12 months later (or 8 months if you train with Young Drivers Canada) you are eligible for your G2, which is when you can drive alone.

In South Africa you first need to get your Learners License, which I suppose is equivalent to John's G1, and which allows you to drive under supervision of a licensed driver. Once you ready you do a practical and if you pass you get your license, but its only once you 18. You can apply for a bike license when your 16

How are they safe, when I'm cycling at like 15mph and eating a donut at the same time?

Here you just apply for your provisional license and then start driving with an instructor when you're 17, and when you're ready, you can take a test. Before hand though, you have to past a theory (written) test.
