Ligue Sénégalaise de Football Professionel (LSFP)

This past weekend saw the start of professional football in Senegal as their 'Ligue 1' kicked off on Saturday B)

The first division has 18 teams cut in two groups of 9 - well 17 now since AS Saloum weren't able to pay to get into the league (or didn't have the right finances it seems). The means Group A has 9 teams while Group B will only have 8.

According to the league's wikipedia page in French (Championnat du Sénégal de football

- Each club in the first division has 25 players under contract who are divided into two groups: The first group of 18 players who are paid a minimum of 75,000 francs and the second group of 7 players who are paid a minimum of 50,000 francs. For the clubs in Ligue 2, all of the squads pay their players a minimum of 50,000.

This is promising stuff, it'll help the country for the future, that's a fact

Here's the link I read from SENEWEB about the opening weekend:

AND the league's CURRENT STANDINGS:

Indeed it's good, how much is 75,000 Senegalese Francs just out of interest?

According to a converter I used, 75,000 CFA would be only $155 or 114 euros. It's not a strong currency

I dunno, 75,000 sounds like a lot for them over there - I wouldn't be surprised if it was, it sounds so small though :eek2: Wow..

Some good news for the league according to L'EQUIPE: AS Saloum has finally paid off the required payments necessary to participate in the league after receiving pressure from local supporters  The league is currently in its second round so that means some changes will have to be made to the calendar, but hey, the league is back to 18 teams

FINALE- RESULTAT : La Linguère sacrée championne de la Ligue 1

Posted Image
Amara Traore back in his Senegal days, now a champion with Linguere.

Quote:

Article on Seneweb with photo included.

Damnit, they beat Casa-Sport :snooty: Oh well, congratulations to them and their manager, Amara Traore - who was with Senegal at the 2002 World Cup  I think if any home-grown coach deserves the job, it's definitely him as we can't find anyone else at the moment it seems.

FINAL STANDINGS

So Linguere end the season unbeaten with 9 wins, 7 draws, and only 3 goals conceded :eek2:  I'm surprised Jeanne D'Arc were nearly relegated in Group B as well, that's crazy. Looking forward to next season, hopefully we'll see more club websites as well :|

How well do Senegalese sides normally do in the African Champions League?

They don't get far to be honest. I haven't followed this year's, but I know Douanes did alright not too long ago, I'm not sure if it was last year's edition or the one before

If you could compare the Senegalese league to one in Europe (in terms of quality and the teams getting into the Champions League), what league would it be?

That's a tough question....out of any top division in Europe? If so, I'd say the Swedish league - since you don't see many of their sides making it to the Champions League in Europe and the same goes for Senegalese sides in Africa. I'm pretty sure that if you were to take some of the best sides in the Senegalese league and put them in the Swedish first division, they wouldn't struggle at all.

I read an interesting article a few days ago regarding Senegal's participation in Africa's club competitions:

Quote:

Like I stated before, nothing much has happened since Jeanne D'Arc sadly. Along with Linguere, Senegal's other representative will be either Casa Sport or Douanes - who will play in the Coupe de la Ligue final tomorrow. Should be an interesting match

Also: We might find out who Senegal's next manager will be before the end of this year, we'll see :| The popular candidates at the moment are Mayacine Mar, Lamine Dieng and Amara Traore. Traore is the current manager of Linguere and has also coached Senegal before, back in 2006 with Abdoulaye Sarr. Mayacine Mar is the last manager to have won titles with Senegal after winning the Amilcar Cabral Cup in Mali (2001) and the LG Cup (2004). Lamine Dieng coached Senegal in the 90's after the African Nations Cup was hosted there in 1992. Abdoulaye Sarr is also another name that has popped up.

EDIT: Speaking of Abdoulaye Sarr, look at what I found! :

http://www.stadembour.com/1-Ligue%20professionnelle/A-Resultats/Resultats.htm

That's crazy, and look at who's the manager  Sarr ended on a high note despite not winning a title, maybe next season if he doesn't go back with the national team
