Realism and censorship...

Gaming is getting more and more realistic. How will this affect the future censorship of games?

What if games get too realistic and therefore get censored more harshly due to this realism? Sure - in games you can murder children on the streets and kill cops... but do you think we'll be allowed to do this once games are as realistic as real life?

Yes, but as in GTA:SA, it will be rated AO. But who cares right? We will just buy them over the internet.

Yeah, Like slagter said. The thing is, cencorship is even gonna get tighter, and they are in future gonna restrict developers to go overboard, wich actually sucks. THe AO thing is their last line of defence for now. I personally cant wait for things to get uber real, and to really see blood and guts everywhere. I love it. But no 100 Million mommies are to concerned over their 17 year old children playing these kinda titles. But behind closed doors they download clips of Donkeys humping Heroin Junkie girls and stuff. Where is the gratification in that?

Playing a game has never made me a more violent person. I have never felt the need to go pick up a gun and shoot someone's balls off.

And like slagter says, just buy the thing over the net if you are under 18 or under 21. The cencorship board or ESRB is gonna see this in the near future, and they are gonna start implementing tighter restrictions. Mark my words.

I have pondered this very thing SOE. I think once games are like real life it will become a different story all together. The thing that seperates killing people in game and in real life is that games is fake and doesn't look or appear real... but games will get better and more lifelike and that will pose a problem! Maybe game developers will be told not to make it too lifelike to preserve the sense of fakeness?

exactly. In the near future, some games are gonna be labled "snuff" games, and will only be available in Uganda and Uruguai

I was just about to type that exact same thing YAF.

Take a look at GTA:SA... The graphics are pretty KAK if you really think about it. It is not one tiny little bit even REMOTELY realistic, even with the "hot coffee" patch installed the sex is not even gratuitous. You don't see anything, but it still gets an AO rating? Why? Who knows. I recon that they will never make "virtual reality" games because of this fact. It will cause too much of a hubbub.

BUT, just because GTA will never go "Virtual", that doesn't mean other titles wont. What about FEAR? You don't go around randomly killing innocents and cops. It is about tactical fighting and killing "bad" guys. To me, this will be acceptable forever.

Games like Doom will get an AO rating when it become too real, purely because of all the religious nuts out there. But it is not like any of them have ever even seen a demon, so how would they know what one would look like?

I don't know. I just think it will be a case of "drawing the line" somewhere and woe to them that cross it.

Or, something like censorship won't be necessary. We might develop ways of ENSURING that any kind of perceived violence does not influence anyone in any way.

I actually think that games will never become "too realistic". Part of what I love about games is that they're not real. Sure, we aim for better graphics and more realism all that, but don't you think that, a lot of the time, these graphics are more gorgeous than real life? They're more colourful, brighter, much more attractive...

So if graphics could get so "good" that you were basically playing a real-life movie that you could control, it would look so dull that we'd go back to more cartoonish games. Or at least, visibly Cg.

Okay, that didn't make sense when I read over it, but I hope you got the point anyway! :LOOL:

Ok Elya...

BUT, When you watch a movie, does it actually look anything like what you would see in reality? The answer is no. There is a long process of Post Production that takes place on the actual footage for many months to get it to look the way it does on the movie screen or your TV. That process is called "GRADING". It is basically colour correction. Those coulours are not what you would see in reality, it is made after the film has been shot.

So you can apply this to games as well. A lot of production goes into making the game look and feel spooky, or tense or colourfull or whatever. I think the more we try to make it realistic, the more our games will start to look and feel like a movie. It would be really nice to actually see this in practice, but until they get it spot on it will just be the same pixels and models that we have come to love and hate.

Ever played Chronicals of Ridd1ck or King kong?

These games actually feel like movies... creating very convincing scenarios. Breaking someones neck in Ridd1ck feels real...
