Yeah - the modem and installation will set you back about R1500 initally

My problem is that I'm moving - so I can't waste money on installation if Im moving soon!

I tried for wireless, but East London doesn't have coverage!

I've been hunting for ADSL prices as well. The bastards are screwing us so badly. Oversees, its R240 for a 1mb connection and 20 gig cap!!!

I heard AXis here had a special. 30gig cap for R250. Was temp though. I'm with Polka at the mo. Not toooooo bad. Does the job. I just receoved an ad from me friend in the uk the other day. 24Mb connection for £25 a month. I didnt even know it went that high.
Running from desperation.....

This seemed like the best place to ask this.

We currently have a 3Gig ADSL line, with Telkom as the ISP. Does anyone know how this per-gig billing will work? Does it mean that our existing 3Gig will fall away and be replaced by the per-gig billing system, or do we have to apply for it? I understood the price will be something like R80 per gig.

I have no idea Heidi - sorry! I think most people are left in the dark at the moment, even ISP's seem to be unclear on the matter

Telkom still hasn't made it clear exactly how the per gig billing is gonna work other than we're all gonna get screwed. apparently they're looking at between R150-R60 per gig on a sliding scale so the more you use the less you'll pay per gig.... but you still gonna get nailed!

The other crap thing is they gonna start hard capping local, so if you hit your cap even your local is gonna stop. I won't even consider ADSL until the cap is removed.

That sounds so un-like Telkom. Paying less the more you use? The Telkom logic should say that you pay more the more you use.

So when the per-gig billing starts, will a cap still be enforced?

Apparently the per-gig-billing will benifit us low-end consumers

Who knows, maybe in five or ten years we can afford a net connection at home?

Don't worry Heidi, they'll make mega cash still! It'll be a case of R60 per gig once you've hit like 20G for the month, they just gonna make much more money!!!

And the cap enforcing will get worse if it's hard capping. But i think I know what you mean, as in, will they just keep billing you over your 3G or willing they just cap you... not to sure bout that, probably have to pre-arrange with them and say if you want to be capped or if they must just charge you for every extra gig.

@SOE, btw, there is a self-install option available where you don't pay the R404 installation and you should be able to pick up a decent router for like R300. So initial install aint tooooo bad!

So you'll pay a fixed amount for your 3Gig and then only start paying per gig once you go over that 3Gig? Wonder what would happen if you only use an extra 900MB? Would they charge you for that too, or only for exactly every Gig?

Is the 192 DSL worth it? I see Telkom asks R270 per month. Here's a detailed price structure.

Heidi - remember that on top of the line rental from telkom (R270) you still have to pay ISP fee's every month (R350 for 30 gig I think... round about there somewhere)

So in total you are looking at about R500 - R600 a month.

I am willing to pay that much - it's worth it. Only problem is that I might be moving soon, so i can't risk getting it

Well, It looks ok (ie pretty much the same) for low users but for hi users and online gamers the future looks very, VERY bleak indeed.....

web africa

Provisional pricing is as follows:

3gb - R199 (reduced from R250p/m)
5gb - R342 (replacing 10GB)
10gb - R570 (replaces the 30GB)

4gb unshaped - R499 (unchanged)

Prepaid
Shaped PerGB R75
Unshaped perGB R125

Quote:

Prices increases for large cap accounts
- Per gigabyte billing
- Hard capping on all accounts (you will only be able to get to Web Africa's homepage when capped to "top up")

someone

R2250 for 30GB

So that REALLY sux @ss!! No online gaming, coz you'll use up your cap very quickly and once your whopping 3G is up your capped, NOTHING will get through!!!!
