I went to install a game today using the disc and my computer says my diskdrive doesnt exist.

I checked the device manager and its got a ! mark by the drive and it says - Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.. didnt work.. tried updating drivers.. all up to date.

Then came across a page which said about deleting up and lower filters which should make it work and yet again after doing all that nothing.

Ive updated everything I can on my computer and still no success.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

The diskdrive is a Philips DVD+-RW SDVD8820

Best things to try

Unplug it and try it on another machine to see if its a driver issue or not and if it works.

Try another drive on you're PC.

If its knacked buy a new one they are not expensive

i can pick one up for £15-20. (6)

What Windows do you have?

if you have XP search your Registry for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-
11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" then delete all entrys whit the words "Lower or UpperFilter" in it at this position. Might work.

As helpful as that is Gruntt I have no idea how to get to the registery. I know very little about computers so only know how to fix stuff by following info off the net.

open up your start menu, choose the execute option (dunno what it is called in enlish, third one from below). in the prompt that appears enter 'regedit' and you get the registry editor.

From there you can navigate to whereever Gruntt's description leads to :P

then do a google "(Code 39)" maybe you find some detailed instuctions how to fix it ;)

I would take some screenshots and put instructions on them. but im at work and this PC only got Windows 2000!

otherwise maybe it helps:

go to START -> RUN or EXECUTE -> type "Regedit"
search for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-
11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" (its like the Explorer, whit folders)
and delete all entrys whit "Lower or UpperFilter" ind the target *folder*

oo sounds like overheating maybe hoover out the fans that you can seeto remove dust.

elevate the lappy and inch or two to see if that helps, dust and oily crap really take there toll on a laptop after a while and its hard to get into the fans.

Also cheap laptops use brushless fans where ballbearings fans will last way longer but still all require cleaning.

I had overheating problems before and my fans quite easy to get to. Managed to sort it out quickly and now clean the fan monthly to stop it happening again.

And Xia.. im not made of money.. i cant just go out and buy a new computer.. and as I said in a different topic Im buying myself a nice decent desktop in a month or 2 so will hopefully have no problems then.

Its all completely fixed now anyway.. just had to install some patch and the discdrive is all back to normal now and working well.
