What is traditionally used in D&D is the standard Copper, Silver, Gold, and Platinum (and sometimes Electum) as the main means of currency. However, I feel each other group of ruling humanoids should have a currency all to their own. Even in today's society we see many different types of currency circulated around, and this has been happening ever since man made the concept of currency. This is the results: Basic Racial Currency Humans, Halflings: They chose minted precious metals as their currency of choice. They come in Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Copper, ordered from most valuable to least. This basic currency gains no favor when trading to humans or halflings. Elves They chose various rare woods as their minted currency of choice. They come in Oak, Elm, Aspen, and Birch, ordered from most valuable to least. This special currency gains favor when trading to Elves and Sylvan. This Currency also looses favor when trading to racists. Elves are very particular with who gets to mint, and from what trees these coins are minted. Mints only exist in cities of at least 5000 people. Only professional artisan elves(knowledge [the arts] 5 ranks, Professional[feat]) are allowed to mint coins. Each mint has one of each Oak, Elm, Aspen, and Birch, and these trees are never killed. To the contrary, elves tend to these trees daily, and they are kept in prefect repair. Only a handful of branches are removed in any given time, and these are all only 1inch in diameter. The coins are minted from these branches, a process which takes plenty of time. Dwarves They chose various alloy metals as their minted currency of choice. They come in Steel, Brass, Bronze, and Pewter, ordered from most valuable to least. This special currency gains favor when trading to Dwarves. This currency also looses favor when trading to racists. Orcs They chose various minerals as their minted currency of choice. They come in Marble, Granite, Shale, and Flint, ordered from most valuable to least. This special currency gains favor when trading to Orcs. This currency also looses favor when trading to racists. Orcish currency is shaped geometrically, usually hexagons and are usually quite thick. Orcs have a simple minting process which consists of quarrying the stone and then carving it. Gnomes They chose various magically minted crystals as their currency of choice. They come in the colors Purple, Red, Blue, and Yellow, ordered from most valuable to least. This special currency gains favor when trading with Gnomes. This currency also looses favor when trading with racists. The Crystal is roughly the size of a marble and is generally as smooth. The small spheres give off light as a candle, and are usually held is a tar-oiled sack to stop the light from escaping. The minting information is "written" on the magical energy which is contained inside the crystal. The minting process takes a small army of gnomes to complete, because of this, only in populations of 2000 or greater do mints exist. The reason it takes so many Gnomes is not because it is hard, but because the huge machines they use to form the crystals. Favored & Unfavored --When you trade a favored currency, you gain the immediate benefit of a reduction in price. Usually 10% cheaper, this can make a great difference when trading for magical or advanced equipment. This is before a Persuasion check, so the total price might drop a total of 20%. --Unfavored currency makes the trade cost more, usually 10%, but it can go up to 50%. It is usually a good idea to have some currency of each type to avoid unnecessary costs. Edited by Savarast, Feb 23 2009, 02:28:32 PM.
