There is one ability check associated with each ability. All classes have been modified to include all six checks (these replace saving throws).

Power Check: To determine if you are able to physically overpower your opponent or opposition.

Break Object, Bend Bars, Throw, etc.

Reflex Check: To check if you are capable of reacting with more agility than the problem which faces you.

Initiative, Evasion, etc.

Fortitude Check: To check you are are capable of pushing your body beyond the extremes and to resist physical assault.

Forced March, Poison, Extreme Weather, Drowning, etc.

Mental Check: To determine if you (and how much you know) about a situation on first glance.

Instant Knowledge, Problem Solving, Recollections, Concentration etc.

Will Check: To determine if you are able to resist things which change you perception of the world.

Belief, Foul Play, Illusions, etc.

Personality Check: To force an opponent ( or to resist an opponents attempt) to regard you as more like-able immediately on meeting.

Persuade, Bypass Rule, etc.
