Now I used to absolutely LOVE Stargate. Thought it was the best sci-fi show ever made [till I saw Firefly and then that was replaced by Battlestar Galactica]. I'm somewhat interested in how this show will look and feel. Who else loves [or loved] Stargate?
New Stargate series coming

Stargate Universe was conceived as "a completely separate, third entity" in the live-action Stargate franchise – as opposed to Stargate Atlantis, which was created as a spin-off from the first series Stargate SG-1. Stargate Atlantis producer Joseph Mallozzi stated that Universe aims to "delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran", and that it is "in many ways [...] a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction." The new show will be more serialized than its predecessors.

Like the first two series in the franchise, Stargate Universe will take place during the present time, not in the distant future. The show will be set on an Ancient ship, the Destiny, that was part of an Ancient experiment to seed the galaxies with Stargates millions of years ago. A second ship would follow up and explore, using the ninth and final gate chevron (whose purpose was previously unknown) to get to the first ship, but the Ancient experiment was prematurely ended by the Ancients' ascension. A team of soldiers and scientists from Earth step through the Stargate in present time to find the Destiny after their base is attacked. The Destiny is so big that they believe it to be a planet at first, but the ship is now falling apart as it was never meant to be inhabited. As it is impossible for the team to return to Earth, they must fend for themselves aboard the ship as it takes them to the far reaches of the universe. The writers have discussed the possibility that each season represents a voyage of the Destiny through a different galaxy.

The show will be more relationship-based and more arc-driven and will involve more space-based action than SG-1 or Atlantis. "Survival and sacrifice" were the two main themes that were discussed at the preliminary script stages of the show, as even life support including air supply is a problem. Stargate Universe will be "a lot darker" than the previous Stargate series, beginning with three major deaths in the pilot episode and having one suicide by episode six, although humor will remain part of the franchise. The show will focus mostly on the people aboard the ship instead of planet-based exploration, and in Brad Wright's words will be "hopefully exploring the truly alien, and avoiding the rubber faced English-speaking one". Despite the focus on survival, the show "will also focus on exploration and adventure – and, by extension, the occasional alien encounter as well". A single dominant villain race like on SG-1 and Atlantis will not be featured.

Richard Dean Anderson Leads Charge Of Stargate Alums To New Universe

By Alasdair Wilkins, 11:30 AM on Fri Apr 3 2009

It may be a bold new Stargate Universe, but there's still room for some familiar faces - and the reappearance of Richard Dean Anderson, Stargate SG-1's Jack O'Neill, is just one of many. Spoilers ahead...

Stargate Universe co-creator Brad Wright told Gateworld that Anderson will be appearing in multiple episodes of the new show. He described their relationship with Anderson as "always ongoing" - suggesting Jack O'Neill has plenty of reappearances in his future. Wright mentioned that the actor was on set this Wednesday, where the episode "Earth" is currently filming (there's some discrepancy as to whether this is now the fifth or sixth episode of the series). Anderson's Jack O'Neill has been promoted to a three-star general since his last appearance.

Richard Dean Anderson's return is the latest in a flurry of reports, rumors, and speculation regarding SG-1 and Atlantis characters appearing in the new show, despite the fact that Universe's premise of a stranded crew with no way of getting back to Earth would seemingly make guest appearances a bit tricky. Indeed, most of the current reports of returning stars have clustered around the first episode "Air, Part 1" before the Universe cast gets stuck on the alien starship Destiny and in "Earth", where they use an alien communications device to briefly return home.

Michael Shanks and Gary Jones, SG-1's Daniel Jackson and Walter Harriman, will appear in "Air, Part 1", and Jones has also mentioned he is appearing with Anderson at some point, so either Jones is also in "Earth", Anderson is also in "Air, Part 1", or both. Robert Picardo, who played Richard Woolsey on SG-1 and Atlantis, has also been asked to appear early in the show's run, according to an interview from a while ago.

Then there's the report that both Michael Shanks and Samantha Carter actress Amanda Tapping's appearances at this week's Stargate convention in Vancouver have been moved from Sunday to Saturday in order to accommodate some early Monday morning filming - which may or may not be for Stargate Universe.

There was also an offhand mention, a while back, that Ona Grauer, who played the alien Ancient Ayiana, shares a scene with Justin Louis, Universe's Colonel Everett Young. It just goes to show you - the more things change, the more they stay the same, even when you're trapped on an ancient alien probe traveling to the furthest reaches of the cosmos.
