‘Watchmen’ Trial Pushed Back To January

Posted by The Movie God | December 17th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

In what’s already a tense situation, Judge Gary Allen Feess has pushed the Watchmen trial back two weeks to January 20, 2009

The trial is set to determine whether Warner Bros. has the right to make and distribute Watchmen, or if Fox owned rights all along. Both studios had requested that the judge make a decision based solely on the summaries presented, but because the contract between Fox and producer Larry Gordon was so open, it was decided that the trial was necessary.

The worst thing about all of this is that Zack Snyder’s film for Warner Bros. is set for a March 6, 2009 release — a mere month and a half or so after the trial’s new set date. With questions swirling as to whether the movie will even get the chance to come out after this trial is over, fans may be panicking a bit. On the other hand, it has been officially documented that Alan Moore giggled for a moment… the first time he’s done so in 36 years.

It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this. If only Fox would have pursued the trial when they found out the movie was being made instead of waiting until it was completely finished and set to release. Silly Fox … or smart — if they win the suit, it could mean that they allow the film to be released, but then they get a percentage of the profits, and let’s face it, there will be a profit. As most people seem to think — and I tend to agree — this isn’t big enough to stop Watchmen from coming out and it’s likely to settle at some point.

Still, it’s right there and it’s looking at us, so cross those digits.

‘Watchmen’ Sinks Further Into Legal Quicksand

Posted by The Movie God | December 27th, 2008 at 11:50 am

Judge Gary A. Rees, who had recently set a January 20, 2009 court date for the Warner Bros. vs Fox trial to see who has the rights to WB’s highly-anticipated Watchmen adaptation, has gone ahead and made a surprise ruling. I guess the judge must have gotten a Ding! from Southwest with can’t-miss airfare to Cabo, because he’s skipped the trial and made a decision in favor of Fox.

The official ruling came in the form of a five-page written order, but detailed reasons were not given. The only explanation given so far is simply that “Fox owns a copyright interest consisting of, at the very least, the right to distribute the ‘Watchmen’ motion picture,” which is really bad for the movie and Warner Bros. A lot more information is expected to be released soon.

The judge’s reason behind the initially set January 20 court date was that there were just too many variables going on to make a decision without a trial, which makes this decision only that much more questionable.

The judge has suggested that the two studios try to find a way to settle the dispute, but it’s fairly likely that Warner Bros. will appeal the decision. They’re already working with Legendary Pictures here and their current agreement involves Paramount handling the overseas distribution, so there’s not a whole lot of room for Fox, who now apparently is the rightful owner of the rights to distribute. Conundrum.

I’m sure I’m not alone in having no idea what this means for the movie, but it doesn’t sound good. It’s also likely that I’m not alone in thinking, well, who gives a shyte who distributes it, just give us the damn movie and send a little money to every studio out there if you have to. While I’m not sure we’ll get the set March release, it has to be assumed that it’s only a matter of time before we do see this, so just have patience my friends. Have patience.

So I got The Watchmen for Christmas and just finished reading it this weekend. Very good story. I did not care for the ending though, I thought it was kind of lame.

I have to read it again. I don't remember a lot from it. Especially the end.

I thought it was AWESOME!
I think the folks who 'rip on it' "did not understand it", "Lost track of what was going on", &/or hated seeing naked penis.
Now I have to get myslef my 4th copy of that damned graphic novel since the very ending did not seem familiar to me.

I had e-mailed the following to Sir Jon Woll:

"Saw The Watchmen last night, and I FREAKIN’ LOVED IT!

I have not read the graphic novel since before I loaned it to Jason Edwards, which was my third copy, 2nd was loaned to Ragin, and that first hardcover I got as a senior in High School has been with my Bro for a decade… Anyhow… It HAS been a few years since I read it, BUT the movie seemed to follow the original a lot more closely than the LOTR movies followed THEIR original.

I LOVE how they refused to update it for a modern audience, and I love how they kept it as complex as the original.

There were some minor differences like I thought Rorschach was being cut out of his cell with an Arc Welder, and not a saw – and in the end Nightowl & Rorschahc should have been on these ‘hover scooter thingies’ when they traveled from ARCHIE to Ozimandius’s lair on the ice. –shrug- Some of the very end Ending did not ‘feel’ familiar to me, but it could have just been my poor memory playing tricks.

BUT I FREAKIN’ LOVED IT!

I like how they played up the Liberal vs Conservative thing like I remember the comics doing, and I loved how Nightowl & Silk Specter could not have sex until they had the costumes on, and had done some hero shyte. "

The Watchmen movie was better than the Watchmen comics...
Let me be clear - The movie IMPROVES the comics.

Totally backed. The guy that plays Rorschach is soooo amazing.
It seriously looks like the comic Rorschach was based on the movie one.
