Did you just start a forum on soccer under the GeekFlag?! As well, do you write anything yourself or just cut n paste?

I was a lawn fairy for 10 years. I hope that soccer eventually catches fire in this country much the same way NASCAR has......

Workers need time to watch World Cup?

BERLIN (Reuters) - Employers in World Cup host nation Germany should grant their workforces the flexibility to down tools and watch soccer matches during their shifts, the head of a major workers' union was quoted as saying.

With kick-off times for World Cup matches beginning as early as 3 p.m. local time, the chief of one of Germany's most powerful unions argued that workers should be given the chance to see at least part of the games.

"Employers should be flexible about working hours in order that their workforces can follow the matches," Frank Bsirske, head of the public services union Verdi, told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper in an article on the paper's Web site.

Companies such as Adidas, which are sponsoring the World Cup in Germany, have agreed to allow their employees to watch the matches at their desks, the paper said. Others, like Postbank, are organizing parties for some of the matches.

The head of Germany's employers' association Dieter Hundt told the newspaper no uniform rules should be applied to companies but that each firm should be free to decide for itself what was acceptable for soccer-mad fans.

"Every company should find its own ways together with their workers," Hundt was quoted as saying.

"If there is interest in my firm ... then the current flexible working practices would allow football fans the opportunity to watch part of the match on television."

However, his employees would not be allowed to watch the games at their workplaces, he said.

"I prefer it if my employees remain 100 percent committed to their jobs and not with half an eye or half an ear on the stadiums," he said.

Is anyone going down to Brit's to watch the games at all? I was there last time and it's a lot of fun. It's also the HQ for Germany fans, like myself. Honestly though, I think England has a strong chance this year. I also like the commercial for American Team.

Ronaldo Sees Future in U.S.
Tuesday, May 30, 2006; Page E02

Brazilian striker Ronaldo wants to play in the United States later in his career.

"Right now I have a contract with Real Madrid and I'm only thinking about the World Cup, but without a doubt, the American market is one of my goals for the future," Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo reportedly turned down a recent 10-year, $120 million offer to play for the MLS's New York Red Bulls.

Ronaldo's manager, Fabiano Farah , told the Estado de Minas newspaper that Ronaldo refused the offer because he is happy playing in Europe, where he intends to stay for several years.

"A transfer to the United States right now would not make sense," Farah said. "He still has several challenges in European soccer."

The 29-year-old Ronaldo will start for Brazil when the defending champion debuts in Germany against Croatia on June 13. Ronaldo, who is playing in his fourth World Cup, is tied with Pele with 12 World Cup goals and is only three shy of becoming the World Cup's leading scorer.

He had various injuries at the start of the year and played sparingly for Real Madrid, scoring only five goals in the team's first 19 matches.

Vinnie Jones was a proffessional soccer player who currently holds the record for fastest yellow card (3 seconds). This incident took place in 1987. The unfortunate chap on the receiving end is Newcastle United's Paul Gascoigne. I don't think Vinnie ever expected to be caught on film for it but the shot has been immortalized by soccer fans. He's definitely soccer's ultimate mean machine (thanks to Teak).
