Silence. It stretched out across the school like some evil presence, unusual and strange. However, there wasn't that much that was strange about that day's silence, as the rest of the school had departed for a day of shopping at Hogsmeade, and those who hadn't, were all outside enjoying the unusual warm day. A shining sun gleamed down upon the world, the sky dotted here and there with fluffy white clouds. A small breeze caressed the grounds of the school, bringing smiles to all those who felt it.

But inside, the silence was untouched by any of this, each footstep echoed a thousand fold, each creak in the old castle amplified. To some of the younger students, these noises would instill some fear or discomfort, but for those who had been at Hogwarts for as long as Star had been, it was second nature, and actually kind of welcoming.

The long tables of the Great Hall stretched out across the room, their tops gleaming from the intense care the house elves gave them after every meal. Nestled near the end of the Ravenclaw table, a short, blue clothed figure could be seen, bent over an array of papers. Her almost-white hair almost shone on its own, and the slight waves bobbed up and down whenever she would move her head. Needless to say, little Star Cassidy was extremely involved in her work. For the first time in her life, she had slacked off on her homework, having taken the time to finish the dress for her best-friend before the Christmas vacations started getting to close. She refused to see Aubrey go to Paris with Ethan without a decent dress to wear.

Star stopped for a moment, looking up with a dreamy look in her eyes, pen pushed between her smiling lips, head propped up on her palm. She drifted off into dreamland again, picturing Paris, and what it would be like to go there.

Quidditch. It was the second most constant thing on Iain Finnigan’s mind, just under Devon Weasley. He was the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain, and that gave him a certain sense of responsibility to actually carry the team to victory. Of course, they still needed a beater, even though the MacMillan girl had been trying to join as a chaser. Honestly, even though he had wanted to give her the spot, just so the team was finally full, he couldn’t do that and be fair to the rest of the team. It was a way of life. Some people made it onto teams, others didn’t. But, Iain had received an owl that the girl was going to try for the beater position. He hoped that she was decent. He also had a certain sense of responsibility to be seen at dinnertime, on Hogsmeade trips, and the like.

It just so happened that this day, he had run out of cinnamon sugar quills. It was a terrible thing, because Iain was more attached to cinnamon sugar quills than he was to his broom, which was saying something, because he spent every spare moment practicing Quidditch. Problem was, Iain had forgotten his money. And so, he had made his way back to the castle with the intention of retrieving his money, and then returning to Hogsmeade on his broom. But, there was something that caught his attention. Some stray emotion, as he walked into the great hall, had caught his notice. As an empath, he was susceptible to these at any time. Usually, he just ignored them, but this….this was different.

The emotion was strangely flavoured, as if it came from someone he didn’t know, someone he’d never met, which was a feat because he’d met almost all of the students at least once, even if he didn’t remember their names or faces afterward. But there was something about it that made him…pause. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but it sucked him in like a moth to a flame. He looked around and saw a blond girl…in Ravenclaw robes. Suddenly, she looked up, and Iain was drawn into her deep blue eyes, as she stared off into space. The girl was obviously daydreaming, and it was something pleasant. Iain walked over to her and cleared his throat. He didn’t really know what to say, so he just stood there, feeling like a damnable idiot.

That emotion though…it was…different. Perhaps he’d just never noticed this girl before. Perhaps there was something about her that made her emotions come across in different flavours than everyone else’s. Perhaps he was just a bleedin idiot, and was imagining things that weren’t really there. His mother had told him once that it was possible for him to go insane if he didn’t learn how to control his odd little ability. He smiled, as it was the least he could do.

Paris...lights, the Eiffel Tower, the boulevards of cafés and boutiques, the music, the food...oh god, Star had to admit that she was a teeny tiny bit envious of Aubrey, but not because she was going. Star couldn't be any happier for her friend. But to see Paris, to be there with someone who cared about you, to be wrapped up in the Romance City of the world, it was all too much for her little imagination. She smiled dreamily again, thinking of the pictures and stories Bre was going to bring back with her. And to see her in her dress...well, Ethan was going to melt, she just knew it. Maybe they would be able to talk after that, if Star ever worked up enough nerve to even just start a conversation. She didn't have a crush on the boy, nor did she fancy him in any way, but he was still a guy, and guys were not exactly Star's specialty. She always ended up making a fool of herself in front of them.

Sitting there, locked in the dream world of Paris she had created, she didn't hear footsteps approach behind her, nor did she feel a presence. When you miles away in Paris, people behind you in Hogwarts' Great Hall weren't real. But she was snapped out of Paris, pulled back to the hard wooden bench beneath her when someone made a noise behind her, as if trying to get her attention. She turned quickly, thinking that it must be Bre or Meg, or maybe even Sheldon, coming to keep her company, and smiled as she turned in the direction of the noise.

But when her eyes landed on Iain Finnigan, the smile froze, and her eyes grew wide with surprise and embarassement. How long had he been standing there, watching her? Had he been watching her daydream, probably looking like a little fool, all alone here in the Great Hall. Iain Finnigan...oh god! Her chest tightened up inside her, her face blushed a deep red, and her eyes lowered slightly. But before they did, she saw he was smiling at her, and that was enough to make her heart cartwheel in her chest. Slightly trembling, the only thing she could muster up to say was a meek and softly whispered, "He...hello!"

He remembered now. Iain had first seen this girl hanging around Sheldon Wood, Iain's good friend and fellow Quidditch captain. She always seemed to be looking for him though, because her eyes lit up whenever he was around. It was interesting, because Sheldon was often surrounded by girls, but it was Iain who kept them close to him, and yet this girl had gone beneath his notice. Was it because he didn't think she was worthy of him? Of course not. Was it because he was busy? Probably. Iain had a tendency to tune out everything that wasn't about Devon or Quidditch. Was that a bad thing? He didn't think so. Then again, he was a typical male, sports and girls always on his mind.

Oh gods...was he really thinking about himself as being a typical male? Wasn't that a girl thing to do? Iain shook his head of the thought as he looked at the back of the girl's head. What was she doing? Couldn't she see that he was standing right here? She must have really been a million miles away, from the look of it. He wondered what Devon was doing at the moment. Well, actually, he knew that Devon was spending her time in detention, for yet another prank that she had done. The girl was Weasley, through and through. Finally, the girl turned to look at him.

And her entire mood changed. It wasn't that Iain wanted to pick up what she was feeling, but the shock and excitement coursing through her was like a noise on a loudspeaker. You don't want to hear it, but you have no choice. Iain was shocked, because obviously this girl was either highly embarassed around all guys, or she just really liked Iain. He was willing to bet it was the latter, because she could hardly look at his face. He heard a whispered, 'hello' come from her and it made him grin impishly. "Why hello there, miss! Couldn't help but notice that you weren't out there among the masses enjoying their time in Hogsmeade. Don't care for the firewhiskey?" Reactions from people...he absolutely loved them.

Star couldn't swallow, couldn't breathe, and was certain that Iain must be hearing the loud thudding of her heart beneath her rib cage. The sound was deafening in her own ears, making her tremble even more. This was two shocks in one...a guy was next to her, talking to her, and that guy was Iain Finnigan. She knew that Iain & Sheldon were close, quidditch team members, friends, but Star had always tried to back away when they talked, even if her eyes were mostly rivited on the handsome Gryffindor. Nor had she ever told Sheldon of her fancy for the guy. Being like her older brother, she knew Sheldon would probably try to drag her to him, to make a conversation start, and that, Star knew, would be the last time Iain would ever speak to her. Besides, didn't he have a girlfriend? Devon, she thought, if she remembered correctly. Pretty girl, from the Weasly family. Like many girls, Star dreamt of times with Iain, but unlike most, never tried to start anything. Who the hell was she kidding?

Her eyes still looking over the details of the wood in the table before her, Star swallowed finally, the lump hard and burning in her throat. She thought by her reaction that the boy would simply turn and leave, and her ordeal of being an idiot would end. But he didn't. Why hello there, miss! Couldn't help but notice that you weren't out there among the masses enjoying their time in Hogsmeade. Don't care for the firewhiskey?

Just the fact that he had found her, noticed her and came over was enough to make her faint. But now he was actually talking to her very pleasantly. His tone sounded impish, sassy, but in a good way. Taking hold of all of her courage, she dragged her eyes away from the table, and up to his eyes. Her heart stopped to see him smiling at her still. She couldn't stop trembling in her skin. "I...I needed to catch up on some work. I've never tried...um, firewhiskey, so I don't know if I like it. Why aren't you...you there?"

Oh god, she felt like a moron, but managed to keep his gaze, even with her blumbering words.

Pride would be his downfall someday, Iain just knew it. He was enjoying the idea that he could toy with this girl. Was that right? Well, probably not, and he should probably knock it off. But hey, he just wanted to get a reaction from her, right? He looked down at the blonde girl, watching her visibly tremble in his presence. Was she afraid of him? Did he have some reputation of evil that he didn't know about? Well, he didn't think so, anyway. Unless the girl knew he was a whitewand...but only a select few people knew that. But hey, he could recruit her...unless she was a death eater. But Iain didn't think she fit the type. For one, she wasn't reeking of hate, malice, and all those other emotions that came along with the Death Eater breed. Maybe she was an order member. He would have to ask someone. There were rumors going around that there was corruption and double agents in the whitewand ranks, so Iain had to be careful of how he approached things. But, he had never been wrong about people in the past. It was easy to read them when you could read their emotions.

She was staring at the table, while he spoke. Was she wishing he would go away? Probably. It seemed that though he had never met the girl, nor even hardly seen her before, she liked him. She liked him a lot more than in a 'just friends' way. Well, if he had been a ruddy bastard, he would have used that information to his advantage. As it stood though, he wasn't. And so, he ignored the emotions roaming through the girl, and chose to speak instead. She finally looked at him, and that made his smile brighten. At least she wasn't threatening to hex him for bothering her. Must mean she wasn't a Slytherin-like Ravenclaw. He had met one of those, and it wasn't pretty.

"I...I needed to catch up on some work. I've never tried...um, firewhiskey, so I don't know if I like it. Why aren't you...you there?"

Why wasn't he there? Oh yeah, he had done an idiotic thing and left his money in his trunk. Well, there was a first time for everything. He grinned, pulled out a chair, and said, "Never tried firewhiskey! Well, that has to be remedied at once! And, I was just on my way to retrieve money so that I could pick up some sweets. But it seems I've come up with a better idea. Let's go have some of that firewhiskey. After all, the best friendships start with a good drinking game. Oh! But where are my manners! My name is Iain Finnigan. And you are?" He was such an idiot sometimes, he swore.

Star wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole. She couldn't help but stumble on her words, and not to mention that she knew her trembling was visible to the handsome Gryffindor. Kneading her hands together to keep her breathing levelled, she tried to concentrate on him, while not staring at him, fixated. It was difficult, however, as every time she had watched him, he hadn't even been aware of her. With the group of girls that always surrounded him, or with his buddies or Quidditch team, Iain Finnigan wasn't the type of guy that got much time alone. Therefore it was always difficult to approach him for a one on one. Who was Star kidding, anyways? She would never have enough courage to talk to him, even if he was standing by himself with no one around for miles.

She thought that after their words, he would say goodbye and go get what he needed. Instead, he sat down next to her, still smiling, his eyes warm and kind. Star shivered slightly, her mind whirling in overtime. Get a grip, calm down, calm down, please don't act stupid! The words kept rolling and rolling in her mind. Why couldn't she really be in Paris? He grinned at her even more, as if the fact that she had never had firewhiskey was some sort of blasphemy.

Never tried firewhiskey! And you are? Star's eyes went wide. Did he just ask her to go have a drink? The word frienship rang through her head at mock speed, making her a bit dizzy. As he said his own name, Star nodded, knowing too damn well who he was.

"Star...Cassidy! And I don't want to take up any of your time. You must have people waiting for you in the village. I'd just be in the way!" Star sighed at herself. That's right, Cassidy, seem weak! She looked back up at Iain, swallowing to bring herself some courage. "You...you know what? I'll take you up..um...on that offer! Let me just...um...get my books out of the way!" She stood up quickly, feeling her heart racing in her chest, and grabbed all her stuff. Turning to move, her clumsy foot caught on the leg of the bench, sending her toppling to the ground, her books sliding half way across the Great Hall. She almost wailed in despair, biting down on her lip to keep from crying. Slowly getting up, she attempted to brush the dust from her robes, avoiding Iain's gaze.

Iain couldn't help himself. He was mildly amused by the girl's reaction to him. He was almost sure now that she liked him...had a crush on him from afar. She was a very pretty girl, though. But...Iain had Devon, and he just wasn't interested in a romantic relationship with anyone but her. Her hands were practically trying to tear themselves apart, and Iain wondered what the girl was actually thinking. That was the downfall of being an empath. You got the emotions, but you couldn't tell the reasons that they were there. Iain had to admit, that he was a pretty popular guy. But, he tended to be the kind of popular guy that spent time with all of his friends either alone, or in smallish groups. It wasn't that he didn't like them, but just that when they all got together, it tended to give him a migraine from the wash of emotions crashing over him. Oh, and it was the worst when it came to the groups of fangirls that he had trailing after him. You know, the ones that followed after him simply because he was on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, and the captain to boot. And they were so unbelievably bubbly and happy that it just made him sick. Just sick.

Well, he was waiting for a response to his invitation. Perhaps she wouldn't want to go. After all, he didn't really like to spend a lot of time around the girls he had crushes on. They could have their butterflies back, he wanted to feel normal. Of course, that was hardly an option, as he was a guy, and tended to get the butterflies when any girl was around. Except, he found himself growing out of that stage, thank Merlin. Well, he still got the butterflies around Devon, but those were the kind of butterflies that he liked.

"Star...Cassidy! And I don't want to take up any of your time. You must have people waiting for you in the village. I'd just be in the way!"..."You...you know what? I'll take you up..um...on that offer! Let me just...um...get my books out of the way!"

Finally, a response! Star...that was a nice name. A bit...well, plain, if he was to be honest with himself. Yeah sure, it was kind of unique in the sense that no one else really had that name, but still, simple and plain. Nothing extraordinary. Regardless, she was turning him down. She was turning him down! That was something he'd experienced a lot actually, come to think of it. Not that he minded, because he didn't base his self worth on what other people thought of him. And then...well she changed her mind or something, because before he knew it she was packing her things and telling him that she'd like to take him up on the offer. Excellent, because Iain was about due for a good drinking. And, the best part was, being Irish, he had a high tolerance to the stuff.

But oh boy, she stood up, and fell to the ground, tripping on the bench or something. He immediately rushed to help her up, but she was already on her feet. Well, that was an experience. He'd been said to make girls fall for him, but never literally, unless you count that time he left his robes and shirt open and three girls walked into the doorframe, one after another. Regardless, her stuff was scattered everywhere, so he gathered it, conjured a bag and carefully arranged it inside. He didn't laugh, though every bit of prankster in him wanted to. The girl was embarassed enough as it was. And so, he handed her the bag, and said, "How bout that drink, then. I'll just nip upstairs for my things and meet you at the front doors?"

If there had ever been a time in Star's life where she would just like to disappear in a cloud of smoke, this was definitely it. Or maybe get some sort of time machine so that she could go back to before her clumsy fall, or even before she woke up this morning. Life just knew when to kick her where it hurt most, and it always seemed to do it when she was already down. Then again, with Star's clumsiness, that was almost always. It was surprising that the girl could still dance with the elegance of a fairy, when after she took off her slippers, she turned into a walking, tumbling pillar.

And this wasn't just anyone she had tripped in front of. Aubrey, Meg, Sheldon...they all knew of her clumsiness, all knew that she wasn't able to stand on her own two feet most of the time. But this was Iain Finnigan, someone who had never met her, never even seen her, and the first thing she had to go and do was fall flat on her face. At least she picked herself up fast enough, used to the bruises and the scrapes.

Still dusting off her robes, she was surprised to see Iain calmly crouching down to pick up each and every one of her books and pads, stuffing them into a bag that she hadn't seen before. Still smiling, without laughing at all, (although she was certain he wanted to) he handed the bag to her. How bout that drink, then. I'll just nip upstairs for my things and meet you at the front doors?

Star nodded, looking up at him briefly with a small, embarassed smile. She took the bag from his outstretched hand with a small, whispered, "Thank you! I'll meet you there in a few!" And with a nod, she made her way to the door of the Great Hall, trying not to run, trying to keep from crying out in frustration. She made her way up to the Ravenclaw tower, clenching her eyes shut every now and then, fuming over her stupidity.

((ooc: Where should we start the next one? Already in Hogsmeade?))
