There wasn’t much to do at the Hogwarts castle after dinner. Classes were over for the day, students were milling about doing homework, or simply putting it all off until the weekend so that they could sit and gossip. Once dusk hit many stayed inside, more often than not in the common room, but there were those few who’d make their way outside, perhaps to the lake, or just for aimless, time consuming wandering due to sheer boredom. This would go on for a few hours, until the familiar time rolled around when students knew they had to return to their common room for the night. It probably wasn’t the most upheld rule throughout the school, and that could be backed by the number of older students finding their way out once their housemates were long gone, their minds filled with dreams thanks to the Sandman. Among those few older students was one Emerson Ferdinand. It wasn’t exactly the perfect example the prefect should be setting for any younger students who might’ve been conscious enough to see him slip out, but getting outside for a little bit was one way to keep from dozing off in the middle of his nightly rounds. Finishing one of the aforementioned rounds, Emery had trudged back to the Hufflepuff common room, taking his time as he dragged the tips of his fingers over the cool surface of the stone walls lining the corridor. This round had been uneventful, almost painfully so, in a way that seemed taunting to the boy who was longing to be outside instead of circling the halls. As boring as the responsibilities could get, Emerson wouldn’t have given them up for such a lame reason. No, it’d take something other than boredom to make him quit at anything. With his sometimes hectic personality, others thought he had minor A.D.D. and would’ve bet that he would turn his back on something once it got boring, but those weren’t the people who really knew him. They’d probably just caught him on a day when he’d had too much caffeine and not enough movement. That wasn’t the case tonight. Tonight it was just lack of both; walking wasn’t enough to keep him going, and there certainly was no running allowed in the halls, along with no sort of sugar or caffeine since dinner. Emerson reached the Hufflepuff common room almost as soon as he was done thinking about whether to continue his lethargic tendencies and go to bed, or kick around his soccer ball outside for a bit before turning in. On one hand, he was yearning for sleep, wanting to just get off his feet and fall into a deep sleep until the morning, but on the other hand, he hadn’t had a chance to spend time with his childhood sport since school had started. To sleep, or not to sleep ... Until later? It was a tough decision, but his love for the sport overruled his want for sleep, and it only took seconds before Emerson was ascending the stairs to the boys’ dorm. Being light on his feet, the boy was careful not to make too much noise as he opened the door to the room he shared with four other boys so that he had just enough room to push his lithe build between the door and its frame. There wasn’t a sound in the Hufflepuff dorm that acknowledged Emerson’s cautious entry, and there were no unordinary stirs from the boys when Emery discarded his Hogwarts robes in favor of a more comfortable outfit including a fitted black tee, and loose track pants. After retrieving his precious soccer ball from the trunk at the foot of his four-poster bed, Emerson left the room as quickly and quietly as he’d entered it. A few minutes and secret passageways later, Emery emerged from the castle into the crisp night air. He could feel his muscles relax and his lungs expand comfortably as he inhaled deeply, welcoming the sudden feeling of freedom from the stone walls that were known as Hogwarts. Even if it wasn’t actual freedom considering he was still on Hogwarts grounds, it was better than being in the castle. A slight shiver went up Emerson’s spine from a light breeze, reminding him that he no longer had long sleeves on. The thought didn’t linger too long in his mind, because once he started kicking the ball around, there’d be no need for longer sleeves. Keeping his soccer ball pressed familiarly against his side, Emerson turned to look at the Quidditch pitch that was scarcely visible from the castle despite the lighting the bright moon provided from its consistent spot in the sky. It wasn’t exactly a football stadium, or field, but it was the closest that the Hufflepuff would get as long as he was at Hogwarts. He could’ve played just about anywhere else where there was grass, sure, but at least the pitch was practically fully enclosed, which was good for when Emerson let loose and sent his ball momentarily flying. With the intention of doing just that, Emerson started toward the stadium. Nearly halfway there, the soccer ball was dropped to the ground and kicked forth at a leisurely pace, Emery picking up his pace to get the ball and dribble it steadily as he got closer to the pitch. |
