Nikki sighed heavily as she made her way to the Grounds. She was coming from the library. Nikki had been working on her Charms homework. It was such a drag, but she wanted to finish it quickly and get it out of her way. She was feeling lazy, and really wanted to rest for the remainder of the afternoon. It did not take her long at all. Nikki already knew in depth what she was writing about before she got to the library. She had made a beeline, straight for the book she needed, which was huge! Nikki had grabbed the book, sat a table, and had nearly skimmed the pages of writing, jotting down everything swiftly and quickly. Nikki hoped that it was enough, but she knew that what she had was perfect. It always turned out that way. She figures she never has enough, and then it turns out that she gets an O. Nikki does have a bit of a lazy side, and she's not that great with Potions either. She finds it frustrating to have every single ingredient precisely the way it should be, added to the substance brewing inside the cauldron, so carefully and meticulously. She just wants to throw everything in and be done with it! Nevertheless, she still manages a satisfactory grade.

A cold breeze blew by brushing every strand of black hair out of Nikki's face. Nikki crossed her arms, folding them over her chest as she tried to keep warm from the wind. It wasn't so windy, but when the wind did whip around you, you felt it. It was only September, but Nikki felt that it was colder, almost as if fall were here. It would be soon. Probably a really bad one, too. Nikki was horrible with predicting the weather, not like she did it for fun. Just if she thought about it, say it looked like it was going to rain, she would obviously assume that, but then it would pass and the sun would come out. Sometimes she was right, but she just ignored this little flaw of hers.

Nikki looked around for a place to sit. She wanted to sit underneath a tree. She wasn't hiding from anybody, not that she needed too, but she just wanted some alone time. Trees (and the Slytherin common room) seem to be her little haven every once in awhile. Nikki walked forward slowly, listening to the grass make a crisp crunch underneath her shoes. She didn't want people to see her standing like an idiot gazing around doing nothing on the grounds. She found it embarassing. Nikki was still looking for a tree, when she found one. It was a gorgeous weeping willow, and the way the branches were swaying with the wind made everything feel so tranquil and placid. Nikki's eyelids starting to droop from the enchanting dance of the tree. Then, her eyes snapped wide open. She better get there before somebody else did. So with that in mind, Nikki jogged/walked towards the tree.

When she got there, she brushed the now motionless branches out of her way, and walked to the trunk. As soon as she got there, she sat down at the base, surrounded by roots, jutting out from the ground. Nikki sat there, feeling as if the roots would just come out of the ground and entangle her with them. Not a pleasant thought, but still it was something to think about as she leaned against the trunk and closed her eyes, letting her hair dance with the wind, just like the branches.

The eyes. One could tell so much about another soul just by looking into their eyes, admiring the detail of the narrowness, the wideness, the gleam of white melancholy. Such a small part, so far from complex, a part that everyone had, and yet, they told different stories, whether the stories be joyous or grievous. Her eyes, wide, emerald-green eyes, an unusual gleam of white close to the iris, they told loneliness, they told sadness, the showed a longing for another person, a person that the blonde could communicate with easily without the worry of that person not listening. It was a good satisfaction, that feeling that someone cared, much like the Slytherin girl cared for her dear sister Vanessa. Sweet Vanessa, where was she now? Was she in an unwelcoming shelter, cold and hungry, or was she in a warm house, laughing with her new parents? The emerald-eyed beauty only hoped it was the second choice. Vanessa deserved the best in life, something that Gemma felt she had deprived her of. Why, when they were abused, had she not called the cops in the night, while her father slept, snoring with his belly facing upwards, on the musty couch? And as the phone rang, she would whisper to Vanessa words of reassurance. That guilt, in time, had made itself a new home in the pit of the blonde’s stomach, and it was not planning on going away, as much as she wanted it to.

Her slender figure, back positioned straight, advanced towards a magnificent cherry blossom, whose flowers had scattered beneath it on the floor, surrendering to the harsh conditions of the fall winds. The wind was chilly, making the girl wish she had brought her sweater and house scarf. The birds had already begun to fly south for their calls did not roughen the still air. Another season gone, and a new one to come. Sweet summer had brought so much, like her loss of virginity to that prick Nikolai Dolohov, whose appealing looks managed to fool Gemma once again. It hadn’t felt as good as she had imagined it would and she remembered spending tedious nights, not with her friends, but in a gloomy hotel room that she was staying in for the summer, crying her eyes out, wishing that she could, in some way, turn back the hands of time. But what if she did indeed have feelings for Dolohov still, even after all of that?

The thought of it was sickening and caused tears to form in the brim of her eye. Obviously the apple did not fall far from the tree. Gemma’s mother had supposedly been a whore, a prostitute, who sold herself to sick men to put bread on the table. Bread on the table my ass. What did she buy with her money? Alcohol and cigarettes. ‘No,’ she thought to herself. ‘Don’t think about it, just go think of poetry to write, enjoy the solitude under that tree. Let everything go.’ But this never worked. No matter how much the blonde didn’t want to think about a certain matter, she ended up thinking about it anyways, no matter how sad it was.

Ah finally she arrived at the tree, even though the walk to it seemed as though it had taken a thousand years. A soft sigh rolled off her tongue as she giggled at the thought of some Slytherin complimenting her by saying she resembled Marilyn Monroe. Yea, she wished. Marilyn Monroe was gorgeous, talented, and rich. If only she had a lot of money, she would make it a point to find Vanessa and give her sister everything she wanted but couldn’t have as a child. As she smoothed her skirt beneath her calves, her eyes turned to glance out at the horizon, the lake appearing to stretch out about five miles or so, even though the blonde knew that it was vastly larger. Her body pushed itself towards the ground, and her eyes, forgetting that it was daylight and that she should be studying, closed, sending her on wings into a deep slumber.

Nikki slightly moved, trying to make herself comfortable at the base of the tree. She had only been out here for a few minutes, lying against this tree, but the bark was already digging into her back. Fucking trees. An unpleasant grimace formed on her lips. She placed a hand on her head as her back came off the trunk. She turned to look at the bark, and stuck her tongue out like it had done something annoying. God, I hate nature. It had been so peaceful and relaxing before...what happened? Everything was so calm and tranquil. The wind was just right and so was the temperature. Nikki just wanted to stay out here forever, and now she wanted to go back inside because of a tree. Nikki had almost fallen asleep, too. She was thinking about the lake. It was so dark and mysterious. She had compared it to herself, alone and full of questions. Nikki was about to drift off to a far off place, but that sharp jab in her left shoulder had angrily awoken her. She had brought her knees up to chest level and rested her elbows on them, letting her forearm and hands dangle loosely on the side. Her legs were spread apart, and she looked around for no apparent reason.

To Nikki's surprise, the grounds hadn't become full at all. It was still so beautiful and Nikki wasn't up to going inside just yet. She just came out I mean come on! As Nikki looked around, she spotted a tall, blonde girl make her way to a gorgeous cherry blossom tree. I mean this tree was absolutely gorgeous. There was a nice, probably cold, bench placed gently right underneath, and there were petals that had floated down and now rested on the bench, pretending to be a human, sitting down, tired from a long day. Nikki thought the girl looked familiar, but she was just too far away. Nikki squinted to see who it was. She could barely make the other girl out. Nikki tried to figure out who it was from the girl's mannerisms. Impossible, but she tried. There--from the way she walked, the girl's perfect posture, and then putting it together with that gorgeous blonde hair, it must have been Gemma. Nikki knew the average person would never be able to figure that out, but Nikki was far from average. Besides, she's known Gemma for such a long time anyway, why wouldn't she recognize her?

With that, Nikki stood up and made her way to Gemma. At least there was a friend out here, a very close friend, and one that she liked. Nikki finally found herself in front of Gemma with a wide grin on her face. "Soo, what brings you out here on this lovely day? I'd figured you were chasing some boy around the school." Nikki gave a small laugh and continued to beam at her friend.

A bored, humble sigh escaped Gemma's lips as she glanced up towards the sky, which was slowly growing darker. Terrible, how fast the days passed, especially when they were days that held no source of fun. And yet, they went by, slowly, slowly, slowly, never to be relived again, never to be thought of again, never to be mentioned again. Her soft-colored emerald eyes followed a black figure that appeared to be advancing towards her. The details of the person were indistinct, except for her body, which was proportioned like that of a woman. Long, straight hair was whipping from side to side as the girl walked, the color seeming to be black. Black hair. No one that Gemma knew had black hair, except for those of Asian descent, the trait of black hair being in their gene pool. Who could it possibly be and what did she want with Gemma? Truth be told, the blonde was in no mood to be bothered today. For one, she hadn’t seen Nikki, the one person she desperately needed to talk to about Nikolai. Two, she had miserably failed a potions test. And three, she was quite distraught for she had not one idea for a decent poem and felt too lazy to go and paint something in the common room.

"Soo, what brings you out here on this lovely day? I'd figured you were chasing some boy around the school."

Ah, the emerald-eyed Slytherin was wrong. The figure did belong to Nikki Robinson, a true companion that Gemma shared all of her deepest secrets with. “Nikki, you whore!” shrieked Gemma as she jumped up from the floor, ducking her head so that it missed the low branch and smoothing the back of her skirt with her palms. “Where have you been? Do you know how much I have to tell you? Sit down (she gestured to the ground). We need to talk.” Offering a smile, the blonde reassumed her position on the grass beneath the tree, forgetting to laugh at Nikki’s quirky remark.

Not bothering to wait for Nikki to sit down, the Slytherin girl jumped right into what she had been longing to say. “Oh my God, I was with Nikolai in the library and we sort of got into an argument (she rubbed her arm uncomfortably as images of that moment in the library flashed through her mind). You know, Niks, I wish I never slept with him. He’s so full of himself, you know? And, what’s worse, is that I don’t know if I still like him or not. I mean, I don’t want to. Please help me.” The blonde brought her knees beneath her chin so that it rest comfortably upon them while a few strand of blonde hair fell along her face.

“Nikki, you whore! Where have you been? Do you know how much I have to tell you? Sit down. We need to talk.”

"I was in the library doing homework. Needed to get it out of the way." Nikki gave a happy smile, but wondered what Gemma needed to talk about. It sounded like something was troubling Gemma, and Nikki couldn't wonder what it was. I mean, a lot happened to Nikki in the past few days. Nikki became Quidditch Captain, and she knew that her wish of finally becoming a bit more popular was finally going to come true. Well, at least she hoped it did.

Nikki sat down on the grass next to Gemma, wondering why she didn't want to sit on the bench. As Nikki was sitting down, Gemma had spoken to her.

“Oh my God, I was with Nikolai in the library and we sort of got into an argument. You know, Niks, I wish I never slept with him. He’s so full of himself, you know? And, what’s worse, is that I don’t know if I still like him or not. I mean, I don’t want to. Please help me.”

Oh God, not him. Nikki found Nikolai adorable, but he was, like Gemma said, too full of himself. Nikki wondered why Gemma was thinking about Nik. She assumed something happened, but she didn't want to assume the worst. "Oh, my gosh, you should just stay away from him. He's such an asshole. Believe me Gemma, don't fall back in love with him, it's not worth it. He's a scumbag, and if you went back to him he'd probably cheat on you. I mean I see him eyeing other girls all the time. He's not bad looking, but still, you know the type of guy he is." Nikki felt bad for Gemma. She was whore who actually might be in love this time with the worst guy ever. Nikki did fancy Nikolai, but she knew those two would never be a couple. Nikki felt she was too cruel for him, but she would have her fun at Quidditch practice. He'll be doing quite a few laps around the field. Nikki smiled at this thought.

"I was in the library doing homework. Needed to get it out of the way."

The blonde smirked at her friend, her eyebrows knit as if telling Nikki that she did not believe that Nikki was in the library, of all places, doing homework. "That's bull. You doing homework?" Gemma exaggerated the words, pushing her elbow lightly into Nikki's sigh, a giggle rolling off her tongue as she did so. "By the way, congrats on Quidditch captain!" Truly, the girl was proud of her friend. It seemed a very rare occasion when females made the team, let alone captain. Nikki deserved it; her Quidditch skills were beyond extraordinary. Of course, the blonde had never found an interest in the sport, but always attended the Slytherin matches, just to cheer on her fellow housemates.

At the thought of Nikolai, Gemma’s stomach growled. Even her body parts had had enough of him. Stupid jerk that he was. How could so much ego be in one person? Nikolai thought only about himself, was the worlds biggest man whore, was adorable…. Everything was so confusing. The girl could never decide whether she really liked Nikolai or not, even though she told herself she wanted to. But damn, every time she got so close to accepting the fact that they were over, he managed to come up with some kinky idea that got the blonde excited.

"Oh, my gosh, you should just stay away from him. He's such an asshole. Believe me Gemma, don't fall back in love with him, it's not worth it. He's a scumbag, and if you went back to him he'd probably cheat on you. I mean I see him eyeing other girls all the time. He's not bad looking, but still, you know the type of guy he is."

Gemma cast a sideways glance at her friend, a soft sigh escaping her lips. Nikki was absolutely right. He was an asshole and a scumbag. Sure, looks were there, but still, he was a womanizer. What girl would want to deal with that? “You know Niks, you are so right.”

[yea, mine was worse]

Nikki shifted slightly in her seat on the grass. She could feel it prickling her bare skin. It felt uncomfortable and annoying. She just wanted to tear the grass out of the earth and sit in a clump of nothingness. Nikki knew that wasn't going to happen. She didn't feel like wasting her energy pulling grass.

"That's bull. You doing homework?"

Nikki smirked at Gemma. Nikki did her homework, but she only did it to please the teachers. She never needs to do her homework because she remembers everything from the lessons alone. Her parents though have always told her to do the homework anyway because first of all you'll get detention if you don't, and second, homework is just practice to make sure that you really understand the material, and it will help it stick in Nikki's head for an even longer time. "Yes, I was doing homework. Not like I needed to, but I did it."

"By the way, congrats on Quidditch captain!"

A huge smile lit up on Nikki's face. She was so happy that Gemma knew about it! Nikki would have told her anyway, but still, it was good to know that her friend was aware of these things too. It was pretty amazing though. Nikki had absolutely no idea that she of all people would be picked for captain. The reason she had joined the team is not only because she loves it, but also because nobody would ever expect her to be on the team. She wanted to shock people by how good she was, and then somehow get popular from that. Yeah, I guess you could say she was a little desperate. However, now she was Quidditch Captain. It was unbelievable. Nikki could hardly believe it. Maybe things would start to turn around. "Thank you!! I can't believe I was chosen as captain. There are plenty of other great players on the team, believe me."

Nikki thought about who was on the team. There was Simon Longbottom, Charlotte Weasley, Davis Travers, Nikolai Dolohov....Nikolai. Gemma said she had met him in the library. They were talking about him right now. Nikki just told her what a scumbag he was. He is!! A cute scumbag, but still, a scumbag!

“You know Niks, you are so right.”

Nikki gave her a small smile. Yeah, I guess I'm right...Tch... Nikki didn't want to reply to that with an egotistical comment. She just didn't feel like it. Instead she shrugged and looked up at the beautiful cherry blossom tree.
