This is the short version.... Last night my hubby and two sons aged 15 yrs and 9 years went out in our boat for some late night fishing. It was a calm night up until 10pm and then the wind started to blow. It was dark but the stars were out. I was home with our daughter. Where we live we are surrounded by trees so you can gage the wind. I called hubby on mobile and forewarned him that it was windy here and he said it was calm out there - but he would pack up and come in. Where he was fishing is not far out from town so if it was blowing here it would probably blow up. Just as they were putting their lines away my hubby pulled in a big fish. BIG FISH alright - it was a Gummy Shark. The boat was lit by a small fluro light. My youngest son hadn't been out in the boat before at night, so he was not feeling confident as it was. Then Dad pulls up a shark. About 1.5 metres long. It came into the boat with a shocking thud. My lad got belted about the legs by this monster. He freaked out and jumped up on to the seats. Only to have the shark knock the lights out. The boat is pitch black and all they can hear is this shark thrashing about. At this time they didn't know what kind of shark. Hubby gets a second light set up only to catch a glimpse of our 9 yr old about to go overboard. He forgets the shark and grabs our baby. It's then he can see the shark clearly. It's a harmless gummy shark. The skin is like sand paper but they are harmless. My hubby picks up the fish by the tail and flings it back into the ocean. He and our 15 yr old calms down our son and then they have to battle the wind all the way in. The wind picks up rather well and they rely on the taco to determine what the best speed is. My 9 yr old called me and was in tears - of course I cried too. But I reasured him that he'd be alright coz his dad and brother were very good boat handlers. But the poor kid was a mess by the time he got home. I gave him some childrens Panadol and with in an hour he was calm and went to bed some what happy. It wasn't a true shark attack - but man they had an adventure. I've included a picture of a gummy shark. CR

Have to admit I found that a bit funny, he's scared of a shark (fair enough) but is going to jump in the water beside more
Get his fishing rod in the tank instead

Sorry Gerr...I wasn't clear - my bad! My son couldn't see as it was pitch black coz the shark knocked the light out. He knows the boat It's nearly 5 mtrs long. he knew the seats and / or sides would be close. But couldn't see. we have a lot of BIG sharks coming in close during the day due to warm waters - effect of global warming. so a shark at night is rare. |

Yeah!! My hubby and oldest son have since been out in the boat but my little guy won't have a bar of it. In the daytime or night time. When they come back from being out in the water he jumps in the boat and helps to clean it. So I dare say he'll go back out again one day....He just needs time. |
