My kids are aged 14 yrs, 12 yrs, & 8 yrs. All are thin / lean and tall. 14 yr old is about 5'6. 12 yr old 5'0, 8 yr old under 5 foot. 2 younger kids have brought home forms from the SA Government. I am suposed to agree to my kids being weighed etc at school. UMMMMMM NOOOO!!! My daughter is 12 and she is of a good weight and height. If we had probs I would walk her around the block myself. The same with my boys. there are sooo many kids - boys & girls with eating disorders these days i'll be f**ked if my kids will be statistic. What do you think????? |

i can see why theyre doing it but dont agree with it. im 5,8", 17 and weigh 64kg but when people find out that i weigh that much they are always surprised, i wear a size 10 or small 12 so am not 'large' but alot of other girls that look similar to me weigh less. i dont see what weight has to do with anything, its unnessecary body fat thats the problem along with unhealthy eating so i dont see why theyre being weighed. back when i wasnt very self confident i used to not like being weighed (for some reason they weighed us before we went on a ski camp at school) because i was so much heavier, but not larger, i can see how someone could easily develop eating disorders from that. i say disagree to it, its none of their business if your children are happy and healthy, if they were morbidly obease then perhaps but yeah... |

Do what you think is best for your kids, not what the school thinks is best for others. My boy is 13, slightly small for his age and slim, does Karate and is the Scottish champion for his height, but he weighs a ton when I try and lift him, like Sharn says what does comparing height to weight prove in her case and my boys, some folk are obviously just heavier in structure. I do agree that obesity (especially in children) needs to be tackled, but do it directly at the ones with the problem, to much fussing around trying to be polite, they have a major health risk, be direct and help them who needs it is my motto. |

Wasn't government done but I beleive I was weighed and had one of those body fat test things done when I was at school. I think it was part of a PE or science class. That was my pre-beerbelly stage :). |

I got subtilely told I need to take a walk today
and if I weighed any less I would prolly need to be hospitalized. I don't own scales but I'm guessing I would weigh around 65kg at 27 yrs old . Some peoples veiw of a healthy weight is seriously twisted.

I find it rather disturbing that they would start that with school age kids. I could see a school segment on health and healthy eating, but focusing on weight and that.... I think that's a wrong message to send. I know we did a growth thing when I was in teh 6th grade, where they measured you, weighed you, sometime in October, then at the end of the school year, did it again, to see who had grown the most, the boy's growth rate vs the girl's growth rate, etc.. .But in fact it was more of a project than a self awareness thing. I pretty much have to stay along wiht everyone else. The perception of the weight thing can be very skewed. I'm 5'2". My weight pretty much always hovers between 62 and 70 kilograms (all depending on how much I work out in a given time period and what type of workout i'll do). Yet I wear a size 8, and have since before I had my kids. No one ever believes me when I tell them how much I weigh as per the BMI charts, that's heading into overweight territory. However I happen to have the genetic disposition to build up alot of muscle mass when doing any kind of resistance training, but a doctor would be quick to either jump down my throat about the dangers of heart disease if unaware of my history, that or have his scales tuned. LOL |
