The Jewel Cichlid Temperment This is one of the more agessive fish in the cichlid family. They like to have a big tank with loads of rocks and caves to hide in. Though I have never had a problem with this fish, it has been known to be very aggressive when breeding. Very territorial also. They are known to kill New World cichlids, like Jack Dempseys and Green Terrors. These guys tend to be bullies. When I first had them in the tank with my other cichlids ( 3 red zebras, 3 labs, and a common pleco) they tended to be very shy, always hanging at the back of the tank. Over the last three weeks, the one I believe is male, has conquered the tank. His color also has changed a lot. He went to a dull grey to a grayish pink color. They have chased my other fish, but never more than that. I think if you keep them with tough fish like them, they will do ok. Coloring The jewel cichlids have a very dull color when they are juvenile, but when they get older, they turn into a beautiful orange or red color with incandescent blue flecks along his gills. Females are generally smaller, and round in shape. They have 2 black spots, one on the gill cover and one along the mid-section of the body. Size The jewel cichlid grows to be about 6 inches in size. They are more long then they are deep, like most of the African cichlids. Orgin The Jewel cichlid originated from the rivers of the rivers in Africa in the Zaire region. Breeding The Jewel cichlids are fairly easy to breed, but obtaining a breeding pair can be quite difficult. When paired, and they are ready to breed, their color appears more vibrant than ever. Unlike the other mouth-brooders in the cichlid family, the female will lay her eggs on a flat rock or a dugout she has made. They make wonderful parents. They will protect their babies if need be. The Jewel, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful in the cichliade family. One of mine recently turned the red color as mentioned above. Amazing coloring, and so far, I have not had any problems out if them. If you are a beginner in the cichlid world, I recommend this fish. Very easy to take care of, and the end result is wonderful! |
