Too small to tell, from what you said about his/her size on The OSpot. Another 6 months should start to show up some difference |

thanks for the replies everyone.
so i got a reply on another board saying, my fish could in fact be geophagus altifrons and not surinamensis because my fish lacks the dark blotch on it's flanks. what are your guys thoughts on this? every pic i have seen in aqualog of surinamensis has a dark blotch on it's flank and altifrons has none. |

I had a similar question when I first started researching what my Geo's actually were. They were sold to me as G. Juripari (before that species became Satanopercha juripari), and I've been told by several very reliable sources, including Mr Rapps, that they're almost 100% guaranteed to be Surinamensis, as Altifrons are very, very rarely exported. A lot of the problem comes from the fact that so many of the Geophagus are so very similar. A lot of the pics out there can't be used as identification because they're not accurate

True altifrons have a rounder head (especially the mouth area) and bright blue or green body stripes and matching fin and tailspots. Your picture looks like a nice surinamensis
Older pictures G.surinamensis is now Geophagus cf surinamensis , cf was added because as they are collected in more places they've been found to be variable but they haven't been broken down into possiable other species or subspecies yet. Some people are even useing the name "Geophagus surinamensis complex " because they think there are several surinamensis or related unnamed species. |

thanks SL. i was reading that some surinamensis are delayed mouthbrooders(sometimes referred to as "larvophil") while others will take eggs into the mouth(sometimes referred to as "ovaphil") is this still a common theory or has that changed as well? |
